Turns out Genentech received 11 grants from the Feds to help them develop the medication. So we've already paid for at least part of it.

Do you think the IRS is going to get a pay back?

Does it make a difference that we paid taxes to get this up and running?

Yes, I expect it will be made cheaply in India but will we be able to import it?

I've always noticed and enjoyed looking at hostas. Unfortunately, I have to admit - like another poster above - that as a child I participated in 'popping' the flower buds. Shame on me! In my previous home/garden, we had some 'green and white' hostas that had been planted by either the previous owner or the builder/landscaper. I moved them, divided them, etc., but never added to the collection or even thought about getting different ones --- I don't think I really ever paid attention at the nurseries to just how many different varieties there were. And I certainly never knew that some would be happy in sun! I was gardening and planting, but hostas just weren't on my radar. When we moved into this house 5 years ago, I planted a little Japanese Maple and decided I wanted to fill out the bed around it right away because I know they don't like having their roots disturbed once they get established. So I was at Home Depot and saw some pots of Rainforest Sunrise. I thought - that will be a pretty contrast to the red leaves of my Bloodgood maple... so I bought them. I also saw some epimedium and decided to put some of those in that same bed. So the next spring when the hostas seemed to be taking a long time to appear, I started searching on the Internet for some info. I remembered how great Gardenweb was when we were building our house (couldn't have done it without the great info and pictures from people on the kitchen, bathrooms, flooring, appliances forums!!!). And I started reading the hosta forum, then the trees, shrubs, etc.... And my eyes were opened to these amazing hostas, and now I fear I'm hooked. I greatly expanded my beds last fall and so I've been making plans for planting this spring/summer. And thanks to you all, I have a pretty good list of hostas, and some companions, that I hope to get asap. So far, in the ground I only have 3 varieties: the Rainforest Sunrise, Cathedral Windows and Rhino Hide. In pots I have: Blue Mouse Ears, Fire Island, Prairie Sky, Wheee!, and the sport I removed from RS last summer. Edit -- Also - thanks to you all, I won't be buying my hostas at Home Depot any more. The RS, so far, seem to be fine and healthy. But I'm glad I've had the opportunity to learn about HVX and the need to be careful of sources.

I can't help but laugh about the irony of this thread and the one that worm started. Here we are talking about the results of not taking proper care of a car, and his thread is all about intentionally doing just that. There is no magic oil that can be run "forever". "Consumers" at large truly don't know what auto technicians are up against these days, and what the very near future holds. The sad part is, I don't believe a large number of them care about us at all. A few weeks ago I contributed to an article that was in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette written by Don Hammond. Even this article falls short of just what is going on. Yesterday a local bodyshop that buys a lot of totalled cars, and rebuilds them showed uphere with a 2006 Jeep Liberty. This thing had 69 miles on it. He had six things not working correctly. With all of the money I have spent through the years to have tools and equipment, there was nothing that I could do for him, yet. My Chrysler DRBIII (The factory tool, same one the dealers use) does not work on the CAN system. I have $9000 invested in just this one tool. I have to go buy a "Star Scan", or "Star Soft" to have the factory tool to work with this newer Chrysler product. That's another $5000 for just one Chrysler dedicated tool. Then I'd still have to pay for a temporary subscription to the Chrysler factory website for the service information, at $20. for three days. Multiply this situation by virtually every manufacturer out there, except for GM, and you have a good picture of whats going on. More than any other manufacturer, GM provides me with easy access to service information and tools, and parts to help me care for their customers. The $7000 that I have invested in GM specific tools, are the most reasonable expense I have to bear. Honda for instance, as mentioned in this article has their factory tool price around $9000, for less than 3% of the potential work that I can do, and continued subscription for the software is required ($1400/yr) or else the tool turns off! BTW GM is slated to switch to a new tool for the 2009's but will continue to support the Tech II at least until 2015. Toyota is slated to continue to share their platform with GM, at least that is the word that I heard last. Same base tool, just a different software cartridge. i personally wouldn't get involved in at home testing because of the role i would have to play with my child---i think there's certain things best left to a 3rd party... abuse/addiction is called a family disease because of all the sticky family dynamics,etc that take place concerning it...i think parental drug testing can feed into all of that. not to mention having to observe the urine stream, etc to really have more reliable results....and why do it if it's not going to done in a foolproof way... there are lots of way kids/adults try to get clean results. certain drugs metabolize out of your system quickly and if not used recently, will not be detected, so denial of use. having a clean sample handy to swap out with current-and yes, 'they' will warm it. taking certain vitamins, meds etc, etc to try to change the makeup/color or the urine along with trying to flush your system. adding things(even water) to the sample to mask results...who knows what else these days! it's been almost 20 years since i've worked in the field... i found it very interesting that a nearby amusement park that my son applied to last summer required hair strand drug testing...i don't know if that was mandated by their insurance company or if it was just their own policy. they took a 100+hair strand sample down to the scalp... and i'm not sure what drugs, besides thc shows up in hair...but i guess they don't want to put up with and take a risk with user shenanigins...

It's possible she will come back. It's hard for me to imagine a parent that enables a child to do drugs or run around. I know kids that age will do what they want sometimes, but that doesn't mean the parents should 'allow' it. It's so common for kids to do what she did, going where it's lenient. When she needs 'parenting', she may be back because she probably knows her father isn't being a parent. When she gets herself into trouble because her father lets her run wild, she will go to the responsible one for help. That's probably why she won't come visit you. She probably knows you are not going to allow her to do what she wants. At this point, she is going to be 18 soon and there isn't anything you can do but pray and just be there for her. You don't have to like her behavior, but let her know you love her unconditionally. Don't give up on her and keep the door open by telling her how much you love her and how much you are worried for her. As she gets older/more mature, she may come around. I wish you luck.

We as US citizens thru our Federal taxes support research for many new drugs and treatments and evaluations of same and much more.

When I was doing basic research I too had federal grant money support for what I was doing.

So what you say doesn't surprise me at all.

And that drug will not be made cheaply somewhere else b'c it's patented and patents run for a good long time.

My daughter is a bio-chemist working in the pharmeceutical industry; she works in the Denver area for a company that produces both name brand and generic drugs. She is the final quality lab supervisor for the generic drug arm of the company. As much care and science goes into the generics as in the name brands.

Patents for a drug can last as long as twenty years, however exclusivity usually is in the three to five year range. The really expensive and groundbreaking drugs tend to be the exclusive right of the developer for up to twelve years before the drug can be produced by a generic manufacturer.

And by the way, the U.S. is the country of choice for inexpensive pharmeceutical manufacturing because of our habit of cleanliness, attention to detail, precision workmanship and relative (compared to Germany and Switzerland) low wage scale for a scientifically technical workforce.

Prescription drugs save and lengthen lives and increase the quality of life. US government support of drug R&D is great investment for us as a society.

As a side note: great drugs are available to the rest of the world at least partly because we are willing to pay so much for them in this country.

Case in point is Canada. Canada has a real sweet deal because they are sold drugs for less there then we can purchase them for here. When we started to inquire as to whether we could buy them from Canada we saw resistance from the Canadian government. Why? Because someone has to pay for all the research to produce those drugs to begin with.

If we started to purchase all of our pharmacuticals from Canada the pharmacuticals companies would be forced to charge the Canadians more.

Fact is that there is no free lunch and someone must pay in the end. Canada's nationalized health care makes it more difficult to extract money from Canadian patients then US patients, however, when push comes to shove the prices would either go up or the drugs would stop being produced and researched.

As yet another side note, my brother in law has lung cancer and has 3 months live. He was told this about 2 weeks ago. He has 6 kids the youngest of which is 5. I don't think he would want to take $100,000 out of his family's hide to live another 3 months but if it bought him 5 years that may be another story.
