My friends from Crete (Greece) came in to town and they brought me a bottle of Greek olive oil ....

I was so excited , and needed tomatoes and bread fast ~

With all the talk here @ GW, I couldn't wait until June/July for a ripe mater !!!

So I went to the Pathmark, and bought 3 "beefsteak" type tomatoes ....

What I ended up doing was letting the tomatoes sit in the olive oil over night with crushed garlic , and pepper ....

And I have to confess, with all the "doctoring" up, it came out pretty good !

Please , don't judge me for buying tomatoes !!! lol !!! ~ Tom

ps. it was prob. the oil that did the trick ;0) !!!!

There's certainly no crime in using a store bought tomato as a platform for good olive oil and garlic.

I woulda put a generous dose of fresh basil in the mix myself.

I'm with you on the basil thing ; during growing season its mostly what I grow between my maters .... but it seems like they rip you off for herbs these days at the store ~ I had to break down and get some a few weeks ago ~ I dried them so I wouldn't feel like I was "too" ripped off !!!!

Vera, I'm having the same problem as you, no sign of tomato sprouts. I even have mine in one of those portable greenhouses. So, that works, huh? Bringing them in just until germination, and then putting them back outside? Maybe I'll try that. We did have a spate of three or four days last week with temps in the 60s, but we're having cool days and nights here in Seattle now too.

I bought a dish of primrose back last winter - Feb I think - they were beautiful till the heat set in - I put the dish in the shade house and low and behold ONE of the four plants lived and is really perking up with this cooler weather. I have not had that happen here in NC before. I had gorgeous ones up in Delaware - they were perennials up there so they can take the cold and freeze. It is our heat down here that does them in.

Oh, well. At least you know how to kill them. :) Callas do well. I have them on a western exposure about a foot from the house in almost full sun and tucked in behind some liriope and in front of Indian Hawthorne. (Before I had them in a more exposed area and they froze back to the ground and only got six inches tall). They are twelve to eighteen inches high and stay evergreen except for as few months in the summer. (They are evergreen from September through June and bloom in April.) Cannas do well also, but there are the dreaded canna leaf roller caterpillars than I keep fighting. Hostas do much better in pots than in the ground because they get colder in the winter and the drainage is better. I have Patriot hostas and some of their offspring.) You might want to check out the daylily festival in Abbeville. It should be coming up soon. You can grow evergreen daylily varieties. As far as the amaryllis, I have several. You can pick them up at Wal-Mart and Lowes around Christmas for a few dollars a piece. They are evergreen and bloom right now. Also, there are a lot of cool gingers you can grow. Check out gingerwood nursery online. It is located right outside Baton Rouge. Tim Chapman is the owner and he is on the ginger forum and is real good about answering questions. The white butterfly ginger (Hedychium) is really nice and spreads rapidly and is junglesque. I also like crinum and eucomis. They do well. A rapidly spreading plant is mexican petuia (ruellia). I have purple and pink ones that get three feet high and are covered with flowers all summer. I could send you some seeds later in the summer if you remind me. The evergreen dwarf agapanthus are really nice too. Home Depot has them right now. As far as reading, you might want to check out Louisiana Gardener (it is the only magazine I get) and Southern Livings Garden Guide (an encyclopedia of 5,000 plants) and Louisiana Gardener's Guide by Dall Gill and Garden Perennial for the Coastal South by Barbara Sullivan (Beautiful pictures and some different plants)

My best suggestion is to ignore a lot of the hype as you make your plans. Putting money into the high priority it-has-to-last-for-years things is essential, but not particularly glamorous. Don't stint on plumbers, electricians, structural advisors, and financial advisors. Be sure that your carpenters, installers, etc. actually know their stuff. It's so easy to get caught up in the fun parts. Some months ago I was feeling that we needed a little sobering up on the GW and I posted a "don't stint on infrastructure" thread that was apparently a downer for some readers. But I also got some private mail from people who said "thanks thanks thanks." Safety, heat retention, efficiency, financial solvency, reliability, and durability are truly glamorous when compared to folly and catastrophe. Anybody with money in their pocket can gussy up a kitchen, but doing the really useful stuff requires deep thinking and if money is tight, requires recognizing alternative options when they're available. Serendipity sometimes does come into play--Craig's List or reuse centers or closeouts or such--but you can't plan around them. Since "chance favors the prepared mind" you need to know brand names, products, colors, options so that you can recognize a good deal when it appears. Give yourself permission to pay full price for something, though. You can't live on wishes and get this kitchen done. There is a lot of distraction, esp fashion and advertising and peer pressure. You will do well to make lists of things that are Wants and Needs and Don't Needs. On the GW, I believe some of the most useful helps are the discussions of what is good or bad in a floor plan. It's also very helpful to analyze the finished kitchens so that you see what they're trying to illustrate. There are indeed smaller kitchens here--modest, attractive, functional ones. Using your Wants and Needs list, go find examples of them. It's also important to try to fast-forward your family configuration so that the kitchen is designed for all of you as you grow older. Your kids become adults and you become old. This is inevitable so plan ahead. Also plan that as soon as your kitchen is done, fashion and product lines will change so you need to tell yourself that you actually are satisfied and not chase the rainbow. You need to think about the importance of visual things vs functional vs personal and decide who gets to make the initial decisions and who gets to edit or veto. If necessary, create a straw person or two to include in the conversation. In my case, there was a fictitious old lady who would need things that might not be required right now. But don't let things paralyze you--the quest of the perfect gets in the way of the quest for real life solutions. You've all waited long enough--get on with it!

I customarily grow several different types of basil in between and in front of my tomatoes.

This year I grew Cinnamon Basil, Lettuce Leaf, Genovese, Sweet, and Globe. Sometimes I save seeds to see if I get a good cross, but mostly it seems to degenerate after two of three years, and it seems to be more productive if I buy fresh seeds each year.

The worst basil I tried was Blue Spice (a hybrid) ... weird flavor and funky aroma!

You're so right! Even wholesale you get ripped off. The reason I grow so much basil is to supply a friend of mine who purees it into pesto for his pizza shop/Italian eatery. Otherwise, he has to buy it in pints at about 9 - 15 bucks each!

The last two years he hasn't had to buy any pesto from July until May (he freezes it).

I freeze a little pesto myself, and dry the remains of the plants at the end of the season for my own kitchen use.

When I do what you did with the tomatoes, I liberally (the only way!) sprinkle the marinating toms with dry basil and let it rehydrate in the ex.virg. olive oil and fresh lemon juice laced with fresh crushed GARLIC. Then I top it off just before eatin' with cracked black pepper and fresh grated Parm.

Yum, yum.

maybe we've caught onto something here ... maybe have a store where you can eat fresh tomatoes (prepared in different styles ; using them in the freshest way possible) ; and a produce area to buy them as well as fresh herbs ... oh the ideas are flowing ! ~ Tom

If you're really interested, there is a restaurant for sale here (in Evansville) called the Vintage Tomato. Currently it's owned by an American couple who renamed it from its original name, The Crazy Tomato.

It was founded about 10 or 12 years ago by a Sicilian fellow who used his mother and grandmother's authentic recipes. Then an Egyptian operated it for several years until about two years ago. The Egyptian fellow was one of the seven guys arrested here and tried in Alexandria, Va., following 9/11, and acquitted. So, it has a colorful history, and ...

It has the right name for your theme. All else you would need is a big greenhouse, oh, about 100 hours a week dedicated to work on your feet, and a really loyal staff of about 20 people who you can trust to support your efforts.

My real advice as a former restaurant owner ... don't get into the business ... it's a surefire heart attack. It's better to just enjoy good food at home with family or eating out with friends.

I hear you on all the work involved in the restaurant buiz. Coming from a long line of greek relatives that own diners, I know how long the hours and days are !
I originaly went to college for hotel/rest management - but after a tri-mester changed out to marketing/sales management - not to say that, thats any easier ! lol ~

But maybe something seasonal ? Memorial Day - Labor Day . Open from Thurs. to Sunday 3-9 ... Now that would be something to consider ! Now if only I had a prime seasonal location, the capital, the greenhouse, and those employees !!! I'd be set ~ Tom
