my bibb leaves are turning yellow!

i purchased gourmet bibb transplants from a local garden store and planted them into my sfg a few days ago. i noticed the bottom leaves are turning very yellow. any ideas why its happening?

also, should i cut the yellow leaves off?

Kelli, I followed the link to your blog, but didn't see a good close-up picture of the problem with your lettuce. However, I often have store-bought transplants lose a leaf or three when I place them in my SFG. As long as the rest of the plant appears healthy, I don't worry about it.

I'd remove the yellowed leaves, because they aren't helping the plant, then watch to see how the lettuce does over the next couple of weeks. There "could" be other problems, including that the transplants weren't hardened off before being planted, water issues, etc... but I wouldn't assume any of those unless the plant has real problems.

You may want to look up what the planting season is for bibb lettuce in your area. If your daily temperatures are really high, it may already be too warm for bibb lettuce to grow well in your area. I've learned that the garden centers here in Florida sell seedlings based on the retail calendar and not really on the planting calendar for my area.

thank you lissa. i posted a close-up of the lettuce on my blog. the weather here has been fairly cool and cloudy. i haven't watered since i planted them monday but the soil looks ok. do they require lots of water? i'm afraid to overwater because i tend to kill a lot of plants that way.

Yes, it can and a good dose of sunny weather should bring the green back. We went thru a very cloudy May and tons of water a lot of my daylilies yellowed. Half of June was cloudy and drippy as well. In the last couple weeks of hot sunny weather most have their healthy green color back. A few still have yellow foliage but they'll get better. I think it's the sun they miss. Thrips and spider mites can also give your foliage a dirty yellow look.

It has long ago been proven putting rocks in the bottom of a container is a bad idea. Doing so raises the perched water table higher into the container and the tree's root system As to your soil test results, the nitrogen should be high, the phosphorous should test rather low and the potassium should be high. Every year we get fantastical explanations for chlorosis in the fall. All anyone has to do is stick their head out the window and look for fall colors. If you see Maple trees turning red and yellow your citrus will have chlorosis soon enough, unless you supplement them with artificial light. At least a dozen maybe more reasons this is clearly not a salt build-up. Toronto Canada gets only 150 hours of sunlight in October. A small fraction of that if you are growing in the window. The first suspect would be the contrast in light levels between where it was sited outdoors and what new light levels are indoors. A plant's ability to adjust to changes in light levels is not unlimited. Something I wrote about a plant's ability to adjust to changes in photo loads: Light Acclimatization The degree to which a leaf can 'acclimate' to changes in photo load is limited. IOW, you can't expect a leaf that emerged under a full sun light load to acclimate to light levels in a dim corner, any more than you can expect a leaf that emerged in a dim corner to acclimate to a full sun site; this, no matter how long you allow for gradual acclimation. Too, the plant's ability to adapt to higher light loads is greater than its ability to adapt to lesser light loads. Using a 1-10 numerical example to illustrate (numerical value of 1 is low light, 10 is high light): If a leaf emerges where the light level is measured at 5 units, it's range of adjustment might only be to 3.5 on the low side, but 8 to 8.5 on the high side. When the level of adjustment required is greater than what the plant is genetically programmed to deal with, the leaf is shed, and this can occur with conspicuous or relatively inconspicuous damage to the leaf. While shed leaves can never be replaced, per se, new branches can form (with new leaves along the new branches) in the axils of dying leaves or from latent buds immediately above scars left by shed leaves. Too, whenever a new leaf appears it will be perfectly acclimated to whatever the photo load is where the plant is positioned (within the limits of what it is genetically programmed to tolerate). The regulating mechanism that determines whether leaves are able to adapt or destined to be shed centers on the flow of a growth regulator, auxin, across what is called the abscission done, located at the base of the leaf petiole (stem) where the leaf is attached to a branch. Steep declines in the rate of auxin flow causes an abscission layer to form, which effectively forms a wall between the dead/ dying leaf and viable plant parts, soon after which the leaf separates from the rest of the plant. Use your finger to tell you when to water. If the ground feels dry about an inch under the surface, then it needs water. Also, if your plants' leaves are curling or wilted looking, then they need water.

If you've read Mel's book, he waters perfectly, in my opinion. He keeps a bucket of sun-warmed water next to his SFG and goes out daily (at least) to give each plants it's own drink of nice warm water. Since I have a life to live besides pouring water at the base of 100 individual plants a day(LOL), I use a hose, but I try to stay low near the roots of the plant and water gently.

i have been on my hands and needs watering them like they're my babies! it's therapeutic. i've been removing the yellow leaves from all my plants and i'm noticing they're perking up quite a bit.

Personally, I'd pick the lettuce leaves yesterday! Depending on the variety, I usually wait until the inner leaves are the width of half my hand and about as long.
