Building my first SFG on Sunday

I just bought Mel Bartholomew's SFG book and I can't seem to find anywhere what the best material is to use. I assume cedar or redwood is the best but I don't want to spend that much money. This is my first time gardening and what if I find that I don't like it - all that expensive wood would be a waste.

Anyway, any suggestions as to what kind of *safe* wood I can use for my garden? Are there safe stains or sealants?
