Goodbye old friends...(image heavy)

We moved into a new house about a year ago and I found myself looking at pictures tonight of the garden I left behind. I really miss it and wonder how it is doing with the new owners...or if it even exists...sigh...

But on the positive side, we are about finished with the work we have been doing on the inside of our new home and can now turn our attention to the blank slate outside...which means I can spend the winter curled up with garden catalogs and my books dreaming and planning...

OMG, I would cry and cry, leaving that beautiful garden. It is so beautiful! I am going to be facing a move in a few years and I am already grieving. How does one get over leaving a garden behind?

Jude, your gardens are spectacular. I hope mine someday look as beautiful as yours. I hope the new folks appreciated all your hard work and are taking care of the roses and plants.

If you don't mind me asking, how deep was the pond and did you use a pump? I'm doing one in the spring and I really love the natural look of yours.

So exciting to see Drema and Skip under the arbor at Woody's! I'm glad they picked a decent weather day for their visit! One day when the timing is right we'll nab them over in our direction. Today was a busy day in the garden, pretty much like Chelone's efforts. Lots of cutting back of stuff in the yellow & blue garden, with just a few bits of eye candy left to enjoy. Today DH cut back all the asparagus and carted it away...a good start and a big help! Tomorrow I hope my friends will be able to come help me once more. So much left to do. Well Chelone, it may seem simple, but infant care is delicate tricky stuff with lots of intuition and guess work involved. This has been 4 weeks from He!! for DD. At the beginning it was a twisted uterus (requiring chiropractic attention), severe afterpains (involving heating pads, belly binding and ibuprofen) and mastitis (which is excruciating and requires painful nursing to help heal and antibiotics as well). Add to this the cough and cold which Skyler, Ivy, Sarah and Leo developed and which caused Sarah to stop breathing at times, and you can see that rest was not much of an option for her. The lack of weight gain in her third child was a mystery to her. So then it became apparent that Thrush was an issue for both Mom and Leo. So now both of them are on oral antifungal. Yesterday Sarah developed a pain below her knee on her calf, and a blood clot was suspected. All in all it has been a terrible beginning...and yet, Sarah feels she has bonded sooner and better with Leo than with Reed and Ivy. I am so proud of all she deals with! You can be sure that Skyler's mother takes advantage of these days to pursue childish games. Skyler too. Tonight he is to write many lines in regard to putting things away (bike & helmet) and taking responsibility for taking his medicines. He has been whining and stamping his feet lately... Oh the joys of being an "evil" stepmom, always wrong and supported by none. I think I'd help him pack his bags personally! I planted white anemones today (soaked last night) in Reed's garden for spring. I think there are only 1-2 plants yet to go in the ground. Tomorrow I hope to empty the last of the containers and save none of it. I simply don't have the energy to overwinter things this year. I am waiting for tulips and a few other bulbs, but no rush on planting those, even though we expect a killing frost this weekend. The pe4ach cobbler is beyond ready to take out of the oven!

Hi - I'm back in Sacramento, and greatly appreciate all of your kind words. Thanks so much. I was planning to respond to each of you individually, but I'm overwhelmed by your support. My mother was 89 in that photo. For the last 11 years of her life, she was legally blind from macular degeneration, and had only peripheral vision. With typical energy, ingenuity and tenacity, and some help from family and friends, she persevered. I heard from neighbor after neighbor what an inspiration she was to them. One said, "She wasn't just matriarch of your family. She was matriarch to the community." It makes me very proud to be her daughter. I'm the executor, and will be back in Ohio a lot for a while. I'll miss the Sacramento cemetery rose garden, my home garden and my life here, but there's something to be said for sorting through the stuff, reliving the memories, and spending time with my family back there. Thank you again for all of your sweet postings. I'm doing ok. It's good to be back home - although my mother's house is home, too. Anita

Hm, well. . .is anyone smaller in size, like me? Frankly I'm always a little embarrased to buy bras because I need an add-a-size padded bra just to make me look semi-shapely. I'd never go to a fitter--would make me feel like a pre-teen (and I'm 50). If the straps don't stretch out first, the padding goes bad after a number of washes.

Yes MamaGoose that is a wonderful thought provoking image. You and LL have been rung through the mill. I also had a few issues with medications for Joe. This is when I started to keep a detailed journal. Some thing that could not just be heard from me but written so the doctors and nurses would see I was keeping details and when he was told to take this or that med is showed up in his food journal as barfing his guts out. Stop the meds he was better. And even though these meds were supposed to keep him from getting sick they did not work that way. I was also very frustrated on the way they were taking care of him in the hospital. His skin was horrible and his toe nails were awful. No one even bothered to look at his feet but me. Interesting the first thing the home health nurse looked at was his feet and she was pleased I had cared for them She said it is common in hospital to neglect the feet. And when they brought him food they did not open the container even after notes taped to the tray and written on his board in the room. I would get there and everything closed up. He could not open the containers so he would go hungry. He was too out of it to ask. I had to spoon feed him for a couple weeks after we got home. Sometimes he fell back to sleep eating half a cup of custard. LBD sounds like a horrible disease. Spiders coming from the ceiling is more than enough to make a person go over the edge. Feeling so bad for your and and Hubby. MG and LL. We did get some sun. We canceled the dentist appointment yesterday AM. too much snow and emergency weather alerts saying stay off the roads. I think we got 5 or 6 inches of snow but at some point in the night there was a bit of rain so it laid down an ice slick under the snow. This morning we woke to sun and about 13 degrees. We did breakfast then out to put the snow plow on the ranger. Joe had about half of it done then I went out to help him do the rest. I know he wanted to do it all by himself but it is good for me to refresh my brain on how it goes on and comes off. Then I went off to the post office and Joe plowed the driveway. LOL He even plowed a swath across the back yard for the kitties to travel on their adventures.

This is one of those threads where when I'm not running around with my hair on fire getting ready for work I'll have to come back and take the time to check out a few of your roses on HMF. Some very nice photos of great roses. Hope your new garden brings you even more joy.

Gorgeous roses and plants. You do a great job photographing them. I would be very sad if I had to leave all my plants behind. But like everyone says your new gardens will be splendid also. Can't wait to see some pictures of it. What is the little rose growing with Jude in the second picture? Thanks, Judy

What a beautiful garden. I can't imagine leaving all that behind. I would certainly hope the new owners take care of those gorgeous roses. But now you are going to have a ton of fun starting all over! How exciting! Keep us posted.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. It really does cause an ache in my heart when I look at the pictures and I guess it really is grieving as you said Kathy. I hope the new owners have kept up with it but I can't help but wonder. By the time we left, it was quite a bit of maintenance and I worry about how they made it through their first Japanese Beetle season...these pictures were taken mostly in the spring before their arrival. Our numbers in the last few years were so high that even I would get so discouraged when it went from beautiful garden to horror movie almost overnight. But I believe the numbers in the whole region were down this year so maybe it wasn't so bad and they made it through...I prefer to think positive!

Terry: It is actually a stream only a few inches deep. We had a natural slope so we just put in the stream with several small little drops/waterfalls and then it ended up in a pondless waterfall at the end. We buried a small plastic pond at the end, covered it with a grate and then just covered that with small rocks. There was a pump in the plastic pond with tubing that took the water back up to the top. We did it ourselves with hypertufa...a combination of cement with peat moss added in and then stuck small stones and stone dust in it to give it that natural look.

Judy: I believe it is the shrub rose DayDreamer.

Redsox: I have put in a few things so far but not much. Unlike our last house which had a wooded lot, this place is 2 acres of NOTHING! A big empty field. I am not sure where to even start without that background of green we had before. We have put in a few trees and some foundation plants and a few things we managed to bring with us. Also have deer here so that brings on a whole new challenge!

What a gift you have given to your small section of the world. The beauty you created will forever make people smile and warm hearts. If you are not one of the lucky ones to visit in person, the pictures alone can melt away any negative thoughts about this incredible plant that is ours. Thanks for sharing. Some where I read "Live like you are going to die tomorrow but garden like you are going to live forever"
