New to Phoenix, we need a landscaper!

We have a HUGE backyard and the pool is complete so we need a landscaper. We purchased some trees from a nursery and they will install them when we get the rest of the landscaping scheduled.

Who is recommended in this area for a combination of sod and gravel landscaping at a good price?

Are you looking for someone to design your landscape or just maintain it?

A landscape designer generally knows our plant palette and can help you create an outdoor environment that will fit your lifestyle. Some will draw up plans while others will create the design and handle installation.

Landscape designers offer various landscape design services. Although a degree, license or certification is not required, those who use this title often possess knowledge, education, training and/or experience in landscape design. A Landscape Architect in training will often refer to them self as a Landscape Designer. Check in the yellow pages of the phone book under landscape or ask your local private nursery. Nurseries have designers that are patrons and generally will have names that they can give you.

If you are looking for someone to maintain your landscape, check with the nurseries and irrigation stores (Turf Irrigation, Horizon, Ewing, Sprinkler World). They should be able to provide names of maintenance contractors as well.

Having said all this, the landscape industry is booming in the Phoenix area. Anyone with a pickup can call themselves a landscaper - no special training is required. Your landscape is a huge investment so selecting someone to care for you investment is a big decision. Ask for credentials and references. Look for certifications such as a Certified Landscape Contractor or Certified Landscape Professional, Smartscape Certification or Desert Landscaper Certification.

I believe the Desert Botanical Garden keeps a list of individuals that have completed their training (Desert Landscaper). Call them at 480-941-1225.

A licensed landscape installation and maintenance contractor will be registered with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, 800 W. Washington, Sixth Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85007, (602) 542-1525 or (888) 271-9286, http://www.rc.state.az.us Testing and certification required, Insurance required.

Lastly, educate yourself to protect your investment. You wouldn't purchase a car without doing a little checking on product history, reliability, efficiency, etc. Check with independent sources like the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension office in Phoenix. They have lots of free information on plants that you can access from your home computer. The link is below.

It's available from your local city water conservation office and has over 200 low water use plants that are colorful, fragrant, provide shade, attract hummingbirds and butterflies to create a beautiful, lush landscape. http://www.amwua.org

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the info. We are looking to have our whole backyard designed, as there is nothing but dirt there now. We are in the process of interviewing several landscapers, hopefully we will find one we like. We will definitely call the Desert Botanical Garden. I don't know why I didn't think of it!!!

Thank you very much for the comments, I will talk to the PB about the concerns. The chlorinator is just to the left of the left skimmer on the second last picture. The caretaker lines come up behind the waterfall, you can see a little black spot on a couple of pictures between the 2 mounds of dirt thats the 8 port valve. Will get a couple of extra pictures tomorrow Lots of us down here, from a town of 18,000, last year they had a golf tourny here in Phoenix for everyone that wintered down here, there was 48 people for golf, more for dinner.

Looks good, but I would eventually shape the beds with an eye towards ease of mowing around them. Those pavers I'm sure help a lot. You can just use plain mulch with a cut edge for creating a bed. As long as it is working good for you, enjoy! I am dead lazy when it comes to mowing but enjoy gardening, so I'm always enlarging beds and shrinking the lawn.

We "built" the house we live in now, tract home in new neighborhood, with some customization. House conversations with friends and neighbors always have regrets in there. Bump-outs, boneheaded designs we should have caught, upgrades that should have been made, upgrades that aren't worth it... the list goes on. Based on our experiences here, I already know there will be design / decor issues that will have D'oh! moments. It's impossible to think about EVERYthing. I think we've hit all the major points, and have enough flexibility to change in the future. Our lives changed quite a bit in the 6 years since building (the once large pantry is now crammed because I now do the majority of grocery shopping at Costco and that not change for at least 15 years for example). I can't see into the future, but we learned from this build, and kept the evolution of our family in mind with our design. 1) The architect/draftsman is only as good as the information provided. They don't know us, or live our lives, ( I wonder if there'd be a benefit to having separate design consultations with the clients, much like relationship counseling, to get a really clear picture, lol), which is why we rely on their education and expertise. 2) The reason copy editors exist: to catch the technical mistakes writers make, and can no longer "see" due to closeness to the project. Same reason med errors occur. I think when we originally like a design, then look at it, dream about it, obsess over it, we can't "see" the flaws or potential problems that others might. Hence all the floor plan critique posts here. I think too, that online and builder plans lull us into a false sense of security- "they design and build houses all the time, they're experts, hundreds of people have bought the design, what could go wrong?!" We found that customizing our builders plan threw them for a loop, and didn't realize it would do so, until after the house was built, and weird things weren't right; towel bar location, depth o linen closet, outlets, etc. 3) We are often playing on tilt. We're all living SOMEwhere, right now, and designing a new place to live, with many features that we love (or would love to have) or without the ones we loathe, those HTOD, that we obsess over in our current or past homes. Finally, the same way any artist of any medium does, we aren't always satisfied with the end result of a project. Sometimes you just have to be DONE, even if to your artists eye, you could have kept going. Having said all that, I know there's going to be some regrets, but hopefully -I believe- the joy will outweigh them!

Find a paint chip card that has the colors of the lightest, medium and darkest bricks. Use the lightest color for the siding and the darkest for shutters. A new pinkish white will be fine for the trim that is already white. Test your samples on foamcore board cut to the width of the shutters.

Aztreelvr is right, Michelle. It's important to educate yourself as well as work with a landscape company. I moved into a new subdivision about three years ago and people scrambled to get their yards landscaped. Unfortunately, many of them got taken: they asked for plants that wouldn't cause allergies and got acacias, plants that had differing water requirements got put in the same drip lines, trees were planted too close together, etc. The good news is that fall is the best time to plant so you've got time to do research and come up with a plan that will be wonderful!

Hi Michelle,

After reading your post then Crista's, I felt compelled to post this.

Crista is absolutely right. When my wife and I first came out here, we went with a company who's name I'm won't disclose, but they did a horrible job. We had issues with plants being over watered, the wrong plants were ordered and had to be re-ordered, and it was just an overall headache.

We did find an extremely good company though and that's why I'm posting this. I highly recommend you work with Phoenix Arizona Landscaping, they are very professional, courteous, and most of all they know what they're doing. Our backyard looks absolutely gorgeous now and we constantly get compliments about it.
