Anyone watching HGTV ???

Just wondering if anyone else out there is as "fed up" with HGTV as I am.

From what I can tell, there are absolutely no gardening shows on HGTV except one or two on the weekends.

I've said this before but they should rename the channel Home Design or Home Decorating and leave the Gardening out because they won't put on any gardening shows.

I was thrilled about a month ago when they put back The Gardener's Diary but then they took it off. I've e-mailed HGTV before suggesting they might want to put a few good gardening shows back in their lineup but it seems they don't take advise from the viewers.

Anyway, I've not watched HGTV for about a month now. Just wondering if anyone else out there feels the same way.

This is SOOOO funny, because I caught myself watching something on that channel today....hypnotized like a deer in the headlights. The 'gardener' made a border out of big CANS (like 5 # coffee cans, etc.) that were painted black and stuck into the ground. Some face down and some face up. And then.....I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP.... she filled the open ones with potting medium and planted annuals in them. The whole curved border of a large landscape bed was done this way. Big black tin cans. If you are imagining it, it won't be even CLOSE to how bad it looked! lol

I agree with you....they seem to have forgotten that the number one hobby of America is gardening.

Haven't tuned in since Easter weekend, when I found no gardening programs (or anything else) that was interesting. As someone stated on another forum, House and Garbage TV. That about sums it up.

My daughter and I are just finishing up a project of doing over one of the empty bedrooms as a guest room. It's been a better experience than I was anticipating. My daughter surprised me with her degree of flexibility and cooperation. She and I are both very opinionated and our tastes overlap some but she tends more toward contemporary and I lean toward country/traditional. I was worried we'd get into a conflict over it, but we've done great! I wanted purple for a paint color, but she talked me into blue. That was fine, my husband's favorite color is blue so I thought it was about time we did something in a color he likes. Then we went to the paint store together and we were pretty close on the color shade we wanted. When we got to the store, we both decided to go by the rule of choosing one shade lighter than you think you need and we both LOVE the color, now that it's done! She liked a contemporary duvet cover and I didn't hate it, but I feel deprived without florals. [g] So, in a stalemate, she asked what her father liked. She's been very mindful that the room is at our house and we should like it. Very thoughtful of her. So when I gave him the choices he chose the exact duvet cover I wanted, without knowing it was that one. I was very surprised. Now that the room is just about done, my daughter likes the duvet cover as much as I do. She wants roman shades on the windows and I like that idea too, but I LOVE lace at the window. Since I had lace panels in the house and it's not winter yet, we put them up for the time being and she really likes them now too...lol. And I'll take my time finding some roman shades before winter. We have influenced each other in a positive way and now we all like the room. It's SO good to have a room done, but who ever said, do one room and nothing motivates you more to start fixing everything was so right. My father used to say the same thing. My mother would suggest they start painting and he would always begin by saying 'No, you paint one room and you end up painting the whole house and replacing the carpet, etc.' It's very noticeable that we need to paint the rest of the first floor now. It has been 15 years since we painted last. [g]

I used to really enjoy This Old House WAY back when they used to do a realistic refurb. Nowadays they sit there and ask How's the budget? and the response is Well, we really have to keep this kitchen remodel to no more than $550,000.00 and the response is usually Wow, that's gonna be tight.... we can get some donations, and you can do some of the labor, but boy it's going to be tight! The Ask TOH is much more like TOH used to be. Always liked Decorating Cents. But I always liked Joan Steffend. She was a news anchor here and one of the best I've seen. Really sad to see her leave. But her show was enjoyable. I taped many of them because there were some ideas in there I liked and at the time I was thinking of moving so I thought I might be able to make use of some of the ideas. I like the shows where they're not using all the imported marble and specialized everything. Branjalina can afford that, but I sure can't. I'll stick with the shows that do the room redo for $500 or the like. Don't have cable or satellite anymore so I don't see HGTV very often. But it was one channel I did enjoy. But then again, when I see it now, there's some strange shows on there too! I really don't miss cable very often. One thing I get a kick out of on the designers. In one room it'll have dark colors and it's OH we HAVE to lighten this up! Get rid of the dark dreary colors and get the light airy... Then the next room, Oh we HAVE to do something about these colors. Make it dark, rich and warm! Anything to sell paint I guess.

Other than a couple of the Bravo realty-based shows (Million Dollar Listing etc) I only watch HGTV, by which I mean I have a few shows set to record new episodes and that's all I generally watch on tv other than the evening news my husband is addicted to seeing :). I only watch television to be my complete mindless entertainment plus prefer to utilize the majority of my leisure time reading so I've never gotten interested in all the must-see shows that require seasons' worth of view time that everybody seems to like. Never seen Downton Abbey or Scandal or House of Cards or really any of the popular stuff....HGTV lets me get my 20 minutes' fix (since it's always recorded I never watch commercials) of views into houses: what people want to buy or what people buy and fix up. I like Property Brothers and it's a fast watch if you skip the first half hour (because who cares about the first already done house and the ones they don't pick) and start with whichever house they select. I like House Hunters and some HH Int'l and the spin offs renovation and where are they now versions. Love all the beach and tropical house hunting shows. Like Flip or Flop. Don't care for Love it or List it because of the hosts, same with Fixer Upper and also because FU seems to do the exact same house style every time. Although come to think of it Property Brothers hasn't done anything other than that same white shaker style/quartz counter/gourmet appliance look in forever either. My enjoyment may be tinged by the fact that I didn't get cable tv until 7-8 years ago so I missed what seem to be the halycon days of yore that many sigh wistfully about. I do recall dimly watching some fix up show many years ago with people gluing grass to walls and doing other strange things so I'm a bit dubious that HGTV was all that perfect LOL. It serves its purpose for me which is to allow me to unwind every evening with a little entertainment that requires no brainpower or extended commitment.

I've never watched Good Bones - the commercials/previews were off-putting enough for me never to want to see it. I do like Sarah Richardson's show, although I do not like the buttons she frequently puts on pillow covers - those are simply not comfortable. I loved Nate & Jeremiah when they were on, but my favorite design show is probably Desert Flippers because it shows houses in Palm Springs that I can relate to, especially now that I have a desert house in adjacent Cathedral City. I've been watching DABL a lot here in the desert because we decided not to have cable here and really do not miss it. Since we have a Samsung TV, we get all the Samsung streaming channels for free, many of which we like. I've been watching Escape to the Country on DABL, which is on a local channel, and while I like the show, I do not like any of the houses but look at them as curiosities. I always laugh when they talk about the "stunning" views of cow pastures - a view I've always hated, having grown up with cow pastures. Parts of England are scenic, but nothing strikes me as "stunning." I have a view of snow capped mountains from my pool patio here, with palm trees in the foreground and around the house. To me, that is more stunning than a cow pasture.

I haven't watched it in months, probably even a year. My Tivo looks for "A Gardener's Diary" so I get an occasional one of those, but I don't just browse HGTV's program list anymore.

I don't think the number one hobby is gardening anymore ... I think it's watching TV!

Several years ago, when they actually had some good shows on early in the morning, I would watch HGTV from 6:30 A.M. to 7:30 A.M. I enjoyed my quiet time with a cup of coffee and the Gardner's Diary and Gardner's Journal.

Over the years there have been some really good gardening shows on and then for some reason they switched to Rebecca's Garden and The Gardner Guy and with Rebecca's Garden, they showed the same things over and over again. I'd even be willing to watch Gardening with Martha Stewart and I'd gotten to the point I'd seen all her epidodes at least two or three times before they took her show off.

Maybe someone will start a Gardening Channel.

It has degenerated into quasi reality TV shows where people remodel someone elses house, or do it real cheap, etc. Little if any gardening. The only one I watch every now and then is the yard makeover one, but even that smacks of reality TV. However, I am sure the shows I would like to see on HGTV would probably kill any hope of ratings!

The Public Broadcasting Channel in my area has a good lineup of gardening shows on Saturday from 12:30PM until 2:30PM. As for HGTV, I'm over it.

Two years ago I started writing it HgTV.
Now, if I were more computer savy the "g" would be a much smaller font size.

I do miss the gardening shows in the early morning. I still watch Househunters but that's because I love the ackward phrases and dialog between the realtor and the househunter..

Realtor: "and here's the kitchen"
Househunter: "wow it's big and bright"
Realtor: "Let's see the living room"
DUH...

Househunter: I hate that color
Realtor: You can always paint!
No kidding!

I also miss the gardening programs. I was watching Urban Gardener on Wednesday nights, but that seems to have been pulled, too.

I know what you mean about Househunters. I do watch that in the evening at 7:30 but I've seen most of them at least once.

I still laugh at the statement someone made, Buyer: "There's no bathroom off the master bedroom?"
Realtor: "No but look at this wonderfully large walk-in closet." My next thought was, "So let's put a potty chair in the closet????.

Or, "No washer, dryer hookup?" "No, but look at this wonderful back yard." Just really stupid statements.

Oh well, still, no gardening shows.

the best time to watch HGTV for gardening shows is Saturday morning IMO. i just spent two hours watching Ground Breakers and Landscape Smart.

EVERYONE WHO HATES THE WAY HGTV LOOKS, LOG ONTO THE HGTV WEB SITE AND VOICE YOUR OPINION. Guess what? HGTV doesn't read the garden web posts. They don't know we're out here. You can let them know through their own web site. Send a strongly worded e-mail about how unhappy you are instead of commisserating here, and maybe they'll get the message. Spread the word. Let's get our gardening shows back. Cheryl

I don't believe email to hgtv is going to help much. Their bean counters are focused on the bottom line and I suspect they have tunnel vision. Without sponsors, they aren't going to air any garden programs and there just aren't that many national companies willing to spend big bucks to compete with the 4 walls crowd. Even if they began to air some decent gardening shows, so many of us have deleted them from our lineup, it would take months or maybe years to establish an avid following again.MHO

Many of us have emailed HGTV. I know I have. I got no response. On July 22, 2006 I sent an email to Melwata@HGTV.com which was the address that I found to use. Does anyone have a better way to contact them?

Maybe it's time to contact the advertisers and mention your disgust with the programming. I guess target the advertisers that DO run commercials during the quasi-garden shows and threaten them that you no longer watch.

I have noticed that the few gardening programs extant on HGTV are so geared to southern CA (and use the same 10 plants) and GroundBreakers and tht one with Rick Kaldrovics is a yawner cuz he does the same designs with same 10 plants (like any other landscaper) in the Atlanta region.

Unfortunately, the PBS's Victory Garden has become so dry and boring (with boneheaded hosting), yet overkill New England horticulture. I think they gave it a new name.

I've e-mailed them in the past several times and never get a response. Someone on the Butterfly forum said they actually sent a registered letter to them. I agree with the show hosted by Rick Kaldrovics - same plants, same BORING plants, and nothing exciting and new.

Gardening by the Yard was one of my favs, as was Gardener's Diary, and Gardener's Journal. Rebecca's Garden just didn't do it for me - she focuses a lot on ditzy craft projects and kid gardening (as if we didn't already know how to do that). The Disney gardening show wasn't too bad, but still kind of ditzy IMHO (it was on several years ago for awhile).

PBS here in Oklahoma sponsors an Oklahoma Gardening show on Saturday followed by Victory Garden. I miss Roger and the old, experience guys. My neighbor calls the new fellows the Yuppie Gardeners. LOL! Most of their segments focus on cooler weather gardens and european gardens. Neither suited to my area in Oklahoma.

Of all the shows, though, Gardening by the Yard had to be my favorite. Paul James is kind of a clown, but he sure knows his stuff, and he introduces new plants all the time, and really focuses on gardening in different areas of the country.

Someone said that the new DIY network had more gardening shows than HGTV, which should by all rights, be HTV now.
