i know i have a lot of questions and i am sorry if i seem to ramble on and on.......when i get home with the stuff you told me to get...where do i construct my garden, my house faces the east and on the north there isn't much room because of the back yard - but to the south i have an acre of yard that i have to mow and was thinking maybe that is where i should put my new garden but got to thinking - is the placement of your garden important like north south east west. Do I sound really dumb? Hope not And I was thinkin when i mow (3 acres) i usually don't have much grass clippings because the mower must mulch it up / but the little bit of clippings that i do have is that what should go in the compose pile. I have to figure out how to make a support for it but in reading ya alls post ...sounds like this is really important. Bless Bless Bless you all for putting up with me. Debbie

on the south side would be the best place, and not just because it means you have to mow less! :) that's where i'm putting mine because the south side of the house gets the best sun exposure. i don't have a compost pile either, this year i am buying my compost. hopefully i will have enough spare cash this summer to build my own bins to make it myself for next year's garden. the lowe's website (do you have lowe's out there? home depot?) has detailed, illustrated instructions on how to build your own compost bins.......i was thinking of using those instructions,though i'm sure there are several sets of directions in various places online. oh yeah, the mulched up clippings from your grass are what should go in the compost pile.

i'm buying compost, peat and topsoil this year to fill my garden beds. i have three 4'x12' beds and two little 2'x3' beds, the sides are untreated pine. the sides are nailed together and supported every 4 feet on the long sides with a 2' length of rebar driven into the ground on the outside of the bed right against the wood. i duct-taped the top oo the rebar so it doesn't scratch me. it might not have been completely neccessary to enforce the sides, but this way i won't worry about it, and rebar is very cheap :)

the beds i built are pretty close to the house......the edge is about 15' from the edge of the porch. they all run north to south, tallest things like corn, trellised tomatoes on the north end (closest to the house) and lower things like strawberries, carrots on the south end (farthest from the house).

don't every worry about sounding silly, everyone on these forums is so kind and helpful and patient. there's no better way to learn than to ask questions.....i asked about a million before settling on how i wanted to set up my garden! welcome :)

I've been building my compost pile right on the ground for a about 4 yrs. now. Grass clippings you can put right in the garden to keep weeds down if you don't have anything else to mulch, tho I would probably put cardboard or newspaper under it. Better yet put them in the walkway to keep weeds from robbing nutrients from your plants and keep the mower from blowing weed seeds into the beds. I like to keep a weed free perimeter around my beds. Helps to keep the slugs down too. I am thinking you must NOT have a grass catcher on the mower if 3 acres doesn't give you much.

True story coming up about removing shoes. once upon a time, I attended a university that had a reputation for rain, rain, rain. Dances were held in a new gym that had a unpaved parking lot. It always seemed to rain hard the day of the dance and the parking lot was a mass of muddy clay that tooks weeks to dry. The girls would get all dressed up in their evening gowns, (crinolines were popular then) and then put on their rain boots. Upon arrival at the gym, the date's duty was to hold the car door open, help the girl gather up her skirt out of the mud (not an easy job with all that frothy crinoline) and carry the good shoes. Once she got in, the muddy boots were lined up against the wall with all the others. And the good shoes donned. Quite a sight! Everyone arrived with her skirts wadded up and ballooning around her knees or higher. Not a graceful entrance, but, hey! everyone was in the same fix. At the end of the evening, it took a while until everyone got her correct boot. (We learned early to write our names on the inside in big letters.) The date then had to help her put the boots back on, rearrange the skirt and get her back into the car without anyone slipping on the wet clay goo. (Red clay stain does not come out of green taffeta. I know!)

I didn't check out the chain stores this year except when someone asked if Midas touch was available. I saw only Granadas at Lowe's some were huge and that rose own root from Chamblee's didnÂt do anything for me although every other rose from this company did well so far; but the weather of last year was awful in every sense so that might contribute to the subzero performance of that rose. Still, I just could not bring myself to buy any of those huge Granadas because I remembered all those roses I had to discard due to RMV. I think I have one bagged rose purchased 10 years ago that has become a stellar performer; two that are OK and I kept two cl. Peace with RMV because DH loves that rose. The others were discarded. I agree with Ann, and with my various ailments plus DH's growing resentments of digging up, discarding and replacing roses, I rather buy a multiflora grafted rose or an own root if the source is good enough than experiment with bagged roses. I do get excited if I see some interesting varieties but then memories of roses from 11, 10 or 9 years ago come alive and I walk away. Trospero is right - the rose itself is usually the least amount one spends on the roses: fertilizers, fungicides, labor (yes, your own) etc. add up. Considering how greedy Paul Neyron is, I somehow doubt that it would do well in a pot. It needs very fertile soil, a lot of water and fertilizer and all that given, it does rebloom even in summer heat for me. Paul Neyron is among those rare HPs that like heat. I love that rose and I hope you got a very good specimen.

Does she work? She may be with kids all week long and this is her way to get some time out. It is probably better for her marriage that her dh doesn't mind if she goes. This may give her the release to be a good mom and wife through the week. Eventually she may not need to do this as the kids will be a little easier to take care of when they get a little older and may not be so stressful for her. If she is not drinking, or doing drugs and her dh is ok with it I would just leave it alone. You don't want to make her feel guitly from what may be some much needed time away for her. Too bad more moms couldn't get some more time to theirselves with their dh's being supportive of it. Of course most would not need every single weekend but to each their own. :)

Nicki, nothing stays the same. Nothing at all. Everything is constantly undergoing change. First of all, you have got to clear your mind. Stop drinking or using anything for a crutch. Sit quietly and think about the person you want to be. Think about the steps you need to make to be that person. Start small. You have little girls and their minds are like a sponge. Find something you can teach them. Their appreciation and joy in new things will help you. Set aside time every day for them and some for yourself, but don't spend a lot of time worrying about whether other people like you or not, or hanging with people who will bring you down. Don't "party"...whatever that means. If you have to make new friends...then be on the look out for some that are the kind of people you want to be around. Take part in your daughters' activities at school, when work permits. If anyone brings you down...or is a bad influence on you...cut them loose. I had to do that, myself, in order to be at peace. There are always people who have nothing to do but sit around and drink and stir up trouble. I know you are a very pretty girl. I've seen your pictures. There is nothing attractive about a woman who drinks too much. You don't want your children to grow up and remember you as an alcoholic. It's a waste of precious time and money. Nicki, you can change, but you have to start taking care of yourself, and that means putting you and the girls first. It takes a little strength to do that, but it gets easier all the time.
