Indian Hawthorn - Ornamental Grass - Not sure of designer's plan

Hello - Can Indian hawthorn 'Pink Dancer' take shade? I am to plant them in front of the house on either side of the porch. The southeast side gets a lot of sun, but the northeast side doesn't get much past noon due to the shade from the porch. Will Indian Hawthorn work on both sides? The cards attached to the plants say full sun to part shade.

On another note, does anyone know of a nice clumping grass that I could substitute for the hawthorn? Something that can thrive in sun or shade, grows about 4- 5 feet and has year round interest until it needs to be cut down in the spring for the news season. I'm thinking that might be a nice alternative to the hawthorn or another shrub. I would rather not have a formal looking hedge . Too much to ask?

I have some in the northwest corner of my house , which is mostly shade. They are doing fine. In fact, I think it would be preferable to have them in a shaded location. The city of albuquerque xerisape plants list shows 'sun/shade'.

It can take shade but may not be performing due to poor plant quality, poor drainage or poor soil conditions. Do you think any of these may be an issue?

It also depends on where you are located...could you give a more specific location?

I could recommend some subsitutes, but would need to know what kind of look you are going for and what general area you live in...

Well it seems you know about everything you need to know. But it just may come to you letting the grass grow there also. I cannot see why if you are going wildflowers. As for self seeding those along the road seem to do just fine without any help even when they get mowed down after their blooms are gone and the seeds have dried. It is as semi-root-parasite. I had one gowning in my yard with all the grass cut just like the rest of my yard. I only problem I had was one of those fools working for the city took his bush-hog and cut it below the soil level. This was the only thing he touched as I kept my yard cut all the time.

Sunbum, one of the best ways to get to the right question is to ask yourself "what do I want this landscaping to achieve?" It's actually a question that suits design decisions in general, from paint colours to fashion. Ink has provided the clue to getting there with his observation that the garage is the prominent feature of your house, visually dominating the house itself, and that this is exacerbated by it being built at the high end of the lot. People with a design sensibility do tend to have an aversion to the "welcome to my garage look." The flip side of "welcome to my garage" is "where the heck is the front door?" and probably (I don't have a house like that so don't know) kind of an unpleasant feeling for people who approach the house, especially after dark. Of course, if you enter through the garage and never order pizza, perhaps this is not an issue :-) So the question you could start with is "does that bother me?" By chance, the sample photoshop that Goldie has provided also has that design feature; actually even more so, where the house is subsidiary to the garage. Of course, the contrast with yours is that your garage at least has a side entry. And you know, maybe people don't mind this look so much, now that millions of people have it. But still, there seems to be some effort being made to make the house attractive, so it does make sense that the landscaping would try to de-emphasize the garage and give the house more prominence. Now, my amateur design skills fall down at the question of "just how do we accomplish that?" but there Goldie's design actually provides a hint... at least, I think shows the effect that landscape design can have. While it is a pretty layout and very tidily done and maintained, I think it exacerbates rather than solves the problem. I stand to be corrected, but here's my rationale. A couple of months ago, someone posted a house for suggestions that was very different from this, but with an instructive element. The house was very close to the street and the lawn was an inverted U shape, with the bottom of the U being closest to the house. I don't remember what the OP question was, but Laag made the point that the lawn shape functioned to visually elongate the yard and thus to make the front yard seem as big as it was going to. Goldie's design puts a similar lawn shape - with a dominant line paralleling the driveway, thus more or less forming the U - in front of the already receding house. It is unfortunate that the photo angle of the later pictures is lower, but it almost seems in the actual installation that the house appears if anything further away from the street than in the photoshop. You may be somewhat protected from the full force of this effect by the line of your sidewalk, but the point remains that the lawn shape is a design element that will have an effect on how the two parts of the building are perceived. My expertise is sorely exceeded by the task of compensating for the fact that the house is on the downhill side, but hopefully you get the point that landscape can affect how the building is perceived - and decide whether you want to play with this element (vs just saying, "yeah, that's how the house is, so what?"). I do hope others with more expertise can chime in to at least explain what principles might be applied. Mine seemed a decent size as well. As I said I 'divided' the northern lites one and have it in a few spots. A few weeks after being planted the Panicum virgatum 'rotstrahlbusch' seems to be doing the best, though to be honest it still looks like crab grass that I forgot to mow. My 'northern lites' seemed a bit drier when it arrived, I even soaked in water for a bit. It's coming around, slowly. I think the problem is that it's a cool season grass, so it slows down in growth this time of year anyways. Fortunately the weather has been more on the cool to just comfortable side this week (though it can't seem to go a day without a downpour of rain). My Imperata 'red baron' is doing okay, I sort of delayed planting it until I found a spot. Alongside the deck I have a strip of white rock with 3 planting holes. I removed the boxwood (that I adored, but it's toxic to puppies) and planted the northern lites and the red baron grass. It should look nice if/when it ever grows. Glen

I was considering trying some Deschampsia for a shady area that's full sun in spring, winter and fall. I read it doesn't like hot humid however so that sort of put me back into an indecisive mode. This is also a very dry area because of tree roots making it one of those challenging spots but I do wish I could find a grass for it. Deschampsia would probably need a lot of extra watering and I simply refuse to fight that loosing battle in summer EVER AGAIN. I had a brilliant idea this morning (even if I do say so myself) after looking out from upstairs down on that whole west side area for the umpteenth time in dissatisfaction---its the same difficult area I am considering the Deschampsia for only this area is further south where it gets sun for half a day. It also has tree roots making it dry and unfriendly and its given me fits for years now. I decided there is too much variety going down there and I need to simplify drastically. The idea--a whole bank of Little Bluestem. I figure since the best looking, bluest, stiffest Lil' BS'es are the ones I see growing out of steep sandstone outcroppings which look like solid rock, that this difficult soil just might make for some similarly vertical plants standing like stiff light blue soldiers. It means taking a lot of plants out but my newest motto is "Do not be a plant collector, it results in creating an overgrown mess". This motto has saved me a lot of money not to mention the time consuming ordeal of trading/mailing plants as exchanges this year. I got a big bag of potting soil and potted up over 40 Little Bluestem 'Blue Heaven' volunteers so far this evening and have them in the shade adjusting and plan to plant them and any others I find that have volunteered in a couple/three weeks when well rooted all along that side in one continuous BS mass planting. Heck, I keep admiring those mass plantings I see around the government buildings so why not do it myself???

Mine have been in their location under eaves for 15+ years. I think they are more of an informal look and I have had to heavily prune mine a few times to keep them under control. Mine do get light, but not direct sun. They get by on very little water. I like to add Burgundy and Bronzy colors with the Pink of the Indian Hawthorns I have.
As for Grasses, I really like the Purple Fountain Grass, also Mexican Sage, Daylillies, Lavender & Flax can be Grass Like. I cut my Purple Fountain Grass down as soon as the new growth was showing...made the area look a little bare, but now it is growing back nicely. I am in So CA zone 9, so my pruning is done earlier than alot of areas. I also like salvias, agastache & alliums for their informal look with bright colors.
Go to highcountrygardens.com and look for grasses... They have a good selection of grasses and good info. There are some with a Pink top that look pretty. In our neigborhood, someone has some in a semi wild looking border and it really looks nice.
One thing I have found is that rather than randomly buy plants that I like and then try and figure out where they go..I now stand back and take a good look at the bed I am working on and imagine forms and colors before I go to the nursery. Of course if I had hired a landscape architect..I probably would not have had to moving so many plants and wondering what to do with some others, that I just can't find a home for! There are also some really nice wild looking roses that might compliment your "look"

inkneedeep ------ I totally agree with your last paragraph. Having learned the hard -- and expensive -- way, I now look at the area to be planted, noting the sun/ wind exposure of the site and imagine what it will look like in terms of form, color, and appropriate plants for the sight, and then buy accordingly. High Country Gardens also has some pre-planned designs for certain spaces, e.g., hot/ narrow strips, and suggested plant combinations for the site. These groups of plants work very well, and have taught me much about garden design.

Oh Yes..The Exposure of the site is important. I like the HCC Catalog too...Great ideas, but I hate to admit, I haven't purchased any plants from them... Have You?

Another thing I have found with the plant info tags that come with the plants, is that because we have such long hot summers, some plants that say full sun...really prefer some afternoon shade. Also mulching really helps retain the water.

Yes, I have purchased from HCC, at their nurseries in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, but also had shipped. Very good quality plants. Great resource for xeric and SW natives. A lot of their stuff, which is full sun in Northern NM, needs afternoon shade here near Las Cruces. Mulching makes all the difference.

Thanks Desert Lover.. Once I get our yard leveled, I think I will take another look at the HCC catalog. I like the variety of plants they have. Thanks for the input!

Hi Carmody,

I'm not sure where you are, except "Zone 7". If you live in the desert, *please* be careful in choosing ornamental grasses as they are incredibly invasive to the point of killing of many native species.

I live in Tucson, AZ and there are millions of dollars spent yearly trying to keep various grasses from killing of native plants. It's terrible! I have some photos where various fountain grasses are smothering out *all* other plants, to the point of looking like some kind of weird fur!

We've been looking for an ornamental grass (besides the low-growing Blue Gramma), and we might try it out, but I'm afraid our neighbors fountain grass that's invading our *entire* yard and might start growing in with it - then it would be really hard to remove... At any rate, if we do try it out I'll post about it here.

Oh, if you want an informal looking hedge, Rosemary is nice. I'm not sure how quickly it will grow from a young plant but we have one here that's about 4' tall by 4' wide. It looked kind of like a fluffy bonsai when I trimmed it 2 years ago (it was about 5' - 5.5' across), but it's already poofing out to a nice, natural shape again.

It's in partial sun, smells wonderful when bumped (it's along a little path), and in early spring it has lovely little blue flowers covering it. It doesn't need a lot of water. I deep water every week to every couple of weeks in summer depending on how hot it's been. If it's 115+ - it gets weekly watering. In winter it's been doing well with monthly deep watering, and to tell you the truth, sometimes just rainfall as it's not on our watering system and I've forgotten it a few times!
