Three Sisters in a SFG??

Hello-

This is my first year gardening, inspired by this wonderful book!! In my various reading, about gardening with kids, I keep coming across this three sisters garden method and wondering if anyone had tried this in their SFG? Even Mel alludes to it on his site though he doesn't give any follow up info. How many of each plant and spaced how if an entire 4x4 block was devoted just to this. Any great varieties to check out for this specific purpose? We would want corn to eat fresh, a variety of summer and winter squash and fresh green beans, though I would be game to plant a dried bean type if I could fit enough into a block to feed a family of six at least one meal of something very interesting.

Some sites also say that planting sunflowers at the north end of the three sisters area would be good but other companion planting lists say that Sunflowers and Pole Beans are incompatible. On the other hand I don't even know if sunflowers would fit in this square.

I would be intersted in hearing pesonal experience with this in the SFG.

Thank you,

Katrina
