SFG without irrigation/watering

Hi all! I'm thinking that if we move overseas, I want to do SFG. Rain only happens in this area from Sept-May, with no rain sometime in May-some time in September. They grow everything we grow for the most part, just without any watering (you basically have to start the crops in late February for summer). I was wondering, though, if SFG's raised beds would dry out too much. I figured a heavier mix may be what is needed to retain more water over that long duration and then maybe mulch? They don't mulch anything, and that seems to work out for them, but I am sure mulch may make things even better. Just curious to hear people's thoughts. Watering isn't an option.
