My 'Graham Thomas' and 'Teasing Georgia'

Hi! I know you guys have probably seen a ton of pictures of these two roses already, but I hope you wont mind if I post a couple more. These roses have done really well for me. Its my second year growing both of them. My 'Graham Thomas' is growing crazy! He just shot up a couple of big new canes; hes now as tall as I am (Im 5ft. 3in.). He only had one dead stem on it this spring. He seems really hardy, I have a feeling he may even grow well a zone or two lower than me. My 'Teasing Georgia' wasnt doing so great this spring, he was having some real wilting issues. But now hes putting on lots of new growth too. Im trying to train him to grow up a trellis on my house. Its rather difficult as the stems are arching. The color fades fast, but I love him. Love his scent too!

They look B E A U T I F U L.

I used to have both of them in the past. They have this wonderful light tea rose fragrance and I love to bury my nose under those petals.

Marleah - I also grow all 3 and they are distinct: 1. Crocus Rose is not yellow, it is apricot/buff fading to cream. Like Carrie Jo says, it starts out tight and opens flat, sometimes with a green pointel. It always blooms in clusters. Foliage is small and glossy. Growth upright, never needs staking. 2. Charlotte is medium yellow, very cupped and much more double than Graham Thomas - you never see the stamens on Charlotte. Also, the blooms last much longer on the bush than GT, which in my experience shatter (too) quickly. Growth upright, sometimes long blind shoots which need to be cut back. 3. Teasing Georgia is lighter yellow, fading to cream on the outer petals. Blooms very double and open very flat. Never doesn't need support! Hope this helps! George

Hi Michaela I agree with Ingrid's assessment of Carding Mill as a climber, since it doesn't remotely seem to want to climb for me. By tall, I mean between 5-6' and about 2' wide, rather like Queen of Sweden. It would lean against an obelisk, but wouldn't really climb up it, and it has been pretty self-sufficient standing on its own. You could put a Carding Mill on one side of those windows and a Queen of Sweden on the other side and they'd have the effect of a pillar without really needing the support. Among the things Chamblees lists for climbing, none of them remotely climb for me. Benjamin Britten and Eglantyne barely clear 3' for me in a good year, and Abraham Darby isn't much taller. Gertrude Jekyll might condescend to reach out a little over time, but so far she hasn't. The closest Austins I've seen for "climbing" are Teasing Georgia and maybe Tradescant. Frankly, though, TG sprawls rather than climbs, and Tradescant weaves around other plants at maybe 3' high and 5' wide in a good year. Oh, I just thought - the one Austin that does climb and in fact needs a support is Crown Princess Margaretha. It has very loose floppy canes that beg for winding around a short pedestal, which is where I have them. It's a creamy white that wouldn't be ideal in the spot you mention, though. In general, for that spot I'd look beyond Austins for a climber - twin trellises of something suited for our zones like Quadra or Illusion would make much more of an impact. I had to dig up my TG. It was in a spot right by my front door and as I said, I was struggling to keep it in line without pruning it every two weeks or so. I dug it up a few weeks ago and put Crown Princess Margarete in it's place. She will also climb, but is much more mannerly. Digging up these huge roses and keeping them in pots over a bad winter has not been fun. But since planting CPM, which I was concerned about, I see she has many new basals starting. Of course I had to cover those from the frost last night. TG I honestly thought I killed it. It was in a pot, the largest one I have, but any growth left died back. I had to cut it back to one large cane. But it does seem to be getting new growth. TG has always came back strong from being cut back. I did put it in the basement last night, so it would not get hit by the frost. TG is going to be the centerpiece of my new circular rose bed. I have a large 7 foot wood obelisk that she will go on and no chance of snaring visitors to the front door.

Why I have kept my Graham Thomas roses for the past 5 years

Here is mine last Spring. It is about 15 years old, and obviously we have not pruned it (except so that we can still walk around it) for several years. I plan to take it down by about 50% in a few days - it really has gotten TOO BIG! IT is 9-10 feet tall right now. My DH built it a support out of plumbing pipes, which is hiding under the rose - you can see a bit of it peeking out of the bottom. We are in North SF Bay Area in CA - it certainly likes it here! Such gorgeous flowers and a great job of capturing them. You know you can never see something like a breathtaking rose enough times. Each picture is something fresh and different.

I'm really curious about Graham Thomas. People seem to have a love/hate relationship with that guy. I'd like to try it and see if I don't end up in the former category.

You know, Graham Thomas is one of my top two
favorite roses. I never get tired of seeing this one.
That soft, buttery, yellow of Graham Thomas would
be a nice color for a kitchen facing east, by the way.

Thanks so much guys! Both of them are wonderful performers, they always seem to have more buds and regrowth on them. I adore the tea-rose scent of my TG. The fragarence of the GT is unusual, but not unpleasant. I only have two more pics of them. The first is of Teasing Georgia last year, after the color has faded some. The second pic was taken in the early spring, and is of the flower bed my Graham Thomas is planted in.

Your beautiful photos really capture the color and character of TG and GT. I have a new Teasing Georgia that is growing on a rose pillar and looks lovely there. Hopefully it won't get to big for it.
I also want Graham Thomas and Golden Celebration. They're on my list for next year. Where I'll put them is a question, though !

Christinmk your photo's are just beautiful. I agree with the others -you captured GT perfectly. The butter yellow always grabs me. One of my favourites.

Thanks everyone! Its getting cooler here already :(. The maple trees are starting to turn color! Its sad to think that all the roses will be going in a month or so (darn all you lucky Californians!). Both TG & GT still have a couple of buds though, horay! Your pic of TG is very nice Teri, how big is she?
