Kaylyn, So much of what you posted here is completely false. If this snake were to bite you it would probably not even break the skin. Even if it did this snake is completely harmless (i.e. produces no venom) so you wouldn't get sick even if you let it chew on you. I have kept and bred cornsnakes and have been bitten by dozens of them. Catching a kingsnake and letting it loose under your house or in your yard won't do anything to protect you from other snakes. If there were food and appropriate conditions for a kingsnake in your yard, one would already live there. If you released on there, it would just leave. Saying the only snakes you shouldn't kill are kingsnakes and greensnakes further reinforces the fact that you really know very little about snakes. There are dozens of completely harmless species of snakes in most areas of the country. Kingsnakes are not normally black with white rings. They are only black with white rings in one small part of their range (i.e. the west coast of the US). People don't get mad when you kill snakes because they are scared of them. In fact, just the opposite is true. People kill snakes because they are scared of them. Some people get mad when you kill snakes because killing snakes out of fear and ignorance like this serves no purpose. It doesn't make anyone safer. In fact, trying to kill snakes significantly increases your chances of a bite. People are bitten and hospitalized every year in this country by snakes they were trying to kill. If they had just left them alone, the people would have been unharmed. Lastly, many people come here to learn about snakes so that they won't be afraid and won't need to kill them out of ignorance. When someone posts a question here, they come for information, not old wive's tales. If you are so pathologically afraid of snakes that you need to kill them, I understand. With a bit of education about the realities of snakes, you can dissipate that fear. But spreading fear and misinformation here doesn't contribute to the larger cause.

If you had read my comment on that photo when it appeared here on these forums, you would have realized that this was a HIGHLY unusual occurrence. Anyone who had actually kept and bred various Garter species will tell you that they do not normally eat warm-blooded prey and actually have to be tricked and conditioned to do so. I think that many people mistake a greenish form of Yellow Rat Snake, which DOES commonly eat eggs, birds, squirrels, etc., for a Garter Snake due to the stripes. A squirrel is a very large and dangerous adversary for a snake, ANY snake; I've fed squirrels to my own captive snakes in the past and it takes a really big snake to swallow one, way bigger than any Garter or Nerodia species. Those were dead squirrels, too. A Garter lacks the means of killing anything bigger than a fish or frog, anything that can fight back, since their weak venom isn't potent enough to take down large prey and they cannot constrict, either. A squirrel or rat would rip one to shreds in seconds.

A lot of misinformation here that might be worth correcting: 1. Most people that are bitten by venomous snakes don't die. In fact, it is very rare for someone to die of snakebite in this country. The odds are under 1% of the bites. I personally know dozens of people who have been bitten by venomous snakes (I'm a herpetologist by training) and I know of one person who died. That person was in the mountains of Myanmar and was bitten by a highly venomous cobra and was unable to get medical help. If you are bitten in the US, you aren't going to die. Statistically, more people are killed by dogs, horses and falling furniture every year in the than by snakes. 2. I've never heard of a single person dying from an infection derived from a snakebite. I think you vet needs to stick to the facts that they know. 3. I've been bitten by many hundreds of non-venomous snakes(and one venomous) and have never had an infection from one any more than you would get from scratching yourself on a plant while gardening. A dog or cat bite is much more serious. 4. You should never rely on the lining of the mouth to identify cottonmouths. Yes, adult cottonmouths do have a white mouth lining, but young ones generally don't. Their mouth lining is pinkish, just like many other snakes. And if you are getting close enough to a potentially dangerous snake to see the mouth color, you are putting yourself at risk. Furthermore, cottonmouths don't always show their mouths when scared. Some do, most just try to get away. Cottonmouths are NOT aggressive. I know this because I have done research with the species in the swamps of South Carolina (where I encountered hundreds of individuals) and have also seem many hundreds of cottonmouths in Texas during the course of my birding and herping. Cottonmouths are slow and heavy bodied. They know they aren't fast so their only defense is to sit there and hope you don't notice them. If you get to close, they will sometimes flash their mouth lining but rarely strike, even if seriously provoked. Things that DO NOT work for identification include: 1. Swimming on top of the water - sometimes cottonmouths to swim high in the water (floating on top). But they can (and do) swim underwater. And harmless snakes can swim above or below the water as well. So this "characteristic" sometimes works and sometimes is wrong. How useful an identifying character is that? 2. Have elliptical pupils (like a cat) - they do, but so do some harmless snakes. And elliptical pupils aren't always elliptical. They open up and become round in dim light, just like they do on your cat. So once again, not a safe characteristic to rely on. 3. Have triangular shaped heads - yes, they do...sort of. But many non-venomous species also triangular shaped heads or can flatten their heads out when threatened to make them look triangular. And by triangular heads on cottonmouths....do they mean seen from above or from the side? Again, not a useful character. It isn't hard to learn to identify the venomous species that live in your area, but you should learn the characters from reliable sources like field guides, not urban legends.

You don't say exactly where you are - for reptiles and amphibians, the locality tells which subspecies, but it is a baby Rat Snake. Rat Snake, WIkipedia Where you are is important to know what it will look like when it is grown. Totally harmless BTW, and can be picked up and played with.
