Black mulberry will make a large,beautiful shade tree and bird tree. The berries are much like blackberries in looks and taste. The only problem is they make a big mess when they drop. If you plant one, put it near the edge of your property, away from you house. The berries seem to act like a laxative for the birds. If planted near your house or driveway, the birds will poop all over the house and car and make such a mess. The berries will drop on your car and stain it. The berries make good jelly and pie. 40 years ago when I was at Ft. Benning, GA, we were sent to training division HQ to clean the yards. We were all very young men and like all young men, we had an insatiable appetite. We never had enough food or time to eat during basic training. Well, they had a mulberry tree growing out front of HQ. I began picking berries and eating them. I ate a bunch of berries before my Yankee friends new what was going on. That Fall, I ate persimmons on a compass range. Being a Southern boy who stalked through the woods all my life definitely had advantages.

Our house came with two mulberry trees in the backyard. One is about 20 feet and produces good sized nice tasting berries. The other one is a little stunted, but still fruits. I think it might have randomly seeded as it's growing in a corner and doesn't look like anyone would have intentionally put it there.

@bananafan, check this out, it has some nice pix of fruiting jujubes, as well as important horticultural details. Like mulberries, jujube flowers and fruits on new growth, so you could literally carve it up as you see fit. As the two last links show, you could grow them close together, simply by cutting off lateral branches to about 6 inches long, and they will grow like columnar italian cypress trees, which grow elegantly slender and upwards. The 6-inch long lateral branches will then thicken, and form fruiting spurs. Most jujube growers would let their columnar jujubes grow to a manageable 10 feet tall, then chop off any vertical shoots, and just let the lateral shoots send out fruiting branches for easy access. This practice also maximizes the trunk strength to height ratio.
