Does any one know what this is? Bug/ Larva in soil?

I found this in the soil of my garden this morning. It had a hard shell, was brown, and it moved one end around. It look very odd and I can not find a pic of this thing online.

It looks like a june bug pupa.

Definitely not a Junebug pupae. It's the pupae of one of the Sphinx moths. Many of the species have very similar pupal cases so it's almost impossible to tell who is who until the moths emerge.

I have had slug/snail damage on Christmas Cactus which looks just like the first picture. Has your daughter tried looking at her plant after dark? That's when they come out. Also useful to check under the pot and under the rim. I can't see anything wrong with the second picture other than the normal lumps and bumps these plants have naturally, especially if they've been knocked or scratched. I'm not sure submerging a cactus in water for two days is going to have helped the poor thing. Has she repotted it yet? I would suggest giving it a break from extreme loving, undertaking a snail hunt and just keeping a close eye on it.

I don't think Kathy meant to be offensive in her post, Pembroke. It would expedite finding threads you know about and wish to engage in if we all put the subject in that space. I know I've missed threads I could have enjoyed simply because I didn't know what they were about and didn't take the time to open them to find out. The subject line is an index and it does work better when it lists what the subject is. I can understand her sentiments. It's right up there with not changing the subject line in reponses on lists when the subject changes. Nothing huge, but with dwindling time and strained attention, it just makes it faster, easier and more enjoyable. I, too, had to open the post to find out what it was about. I wasn't familiar with Countryside and found their site interesting. I'm glad they're around, though I probably won't be doing business with them as they don't sell the types of roses which pique my interest and multiflora is not a good root stock for the majority of Southern California soil types. Anyway, BT is usually something that works on caterpillars that are eating foliage. And there's a variety good in water for mosquito larvae. I haven't seen one good for various grubs in soil.

The loop on the left side is rather odd. Is it perhaps the tongue structure for a big moth?

Sphinx moth pupa is much better than junebug! (pupae is plural pupa is singular)

Yes, the handle holds the developing mouthparts. Sphinx moths are fairly good sized insects, but there are other species much larger that don't have that appendage. They do, however, have an extremely long proboscis, which consists of two parts connected to form a tube. That's the reason for the hook.....neat, huh?

That is what a hornworm looks like when it goes into the soil to later emerge as a moth.

hummingbird moths. we have these. they are fun to watch at dusk. they look like chubby short hummingbirds and aren't the least bit afraid of humans. they buzz around from flower to flower. the kids LOVE watching them! they like pentas and lantana as well as my duranta bush.

it's remarkable how much they resemble the hummingbirds. we thought they were fat baby hummingbirds the first time we saw 3 of them flitting around at dusk. it's hard to tell because of the time of day/night that they appear. it's like clockwork, however
