I have it lining the front of my main rose bed. It hasn't gotten under the roses just yet, but I don't think it will be a problem. If it does, it's fairly east to dig it up (and move it somewhere else as it's a very good ground cover). It does spread horizontally under ground, so if you like having bare earth directly under your roses (for putting in fertilizer and such) you may want to keep it from growing directly under the roses. The main problem I have with my mondo bed is that it's been invaded by my bermuda grass (from underneath a 2 ft wide walkway, can you imagine!) and I have to keep pulling out the bermuda and other weeds. I'm hoping that the mondo gets so dense that it will crowd out the others. When I was at Biltmore, their rose garden had what I think was fescue at the front border of the rose beds. It appeared that they edged the fescue to keep it out from under the roses. I can't do that in my bed because of the mulch. But again, I hoping that the mondo will get so dense that I can forgo the mulch at some point in the future.

Ground cover under oaks? OMG - something I know about; how did I miss it? Oh yeah, I was sick then ... drrrr We had an absolutely lovely green ground cover that took years to look so great; sadly it was mostly torn up when the drain field was redone. It was a combination of dwarf mondo grass, jasmine and sedge grass. It is all slowly making its way back. And yes, I dig up weeds and transplant them around my yard. The neighbor must have planted a mondo grass border 30 years ago and it has slowly spread its way around. It does spread, slowly, and always looks good. Holds up well to traffic and to mowing. We also have a summer ground cover that is some type of green mini wandering jew looking plant that is not a wandering jew. It does exceptionally well under the oaks and bears traffic well but dies back when the rains stop. I can't get the mimosa to spread under our oaks; but I keep trying. ~Dianne After hand digging out an acre of common boston fern; I hate ferns in the ground.

The foilage is a little ragged and some of the foilage is yellowish, possibly a little damage from the drought as well. We plan on spreading a thin coating of compost over the area and then plugging in some areas next week. We have been in the house for a year and a half and have never mowed, it really can't be mowed, it is too low. We have alo never fertilized the area, maybe the compost will be enough?

hello mrcarron64... you're tailing on someone else's post so I'm not sure this will reach you. I would expect after 10 years, the patch may just exhaust itself much as a lawn might do.... parts get choked with roots, there may be pockets that miss nutrition or water because of that. Or of course the occasional disease, root-eating grubs etc. If you are unfenced, consider the occasional dog visiting and urinating. Bit late in the season but perhaps you should talk to the nursery people about whether a restart of the area would freshen it up, dig up, divide, save healthy plants, freshen the soil and start over? Just a thought. If that's a bit too drastic, I'd think of doing a test for grubs... leave a wet bag on an area adjacent to the dead patch over night and lift early morning and see if anything has risen to the surface after a night of chomping roots. Or, just dig out the affected sections, salvage what you can or buy new plants and separate and plug the gaps and wait for re-growth to fill.
