Overplanting bulbs with dwarf mondo grass
Comments (2)You might want to look at some of the daintier succulents that aren't water-hungry over the summer months when your spring bulbs are taking a rest. Sedum (though some can be weedy), some of the Crassula family, Echeveria and Pachyphytum are some possibles. Or herbs such as catmint, thyme - and some of the more elegant sages. If the bed is under a tree you could try Lamium with silvery leaves, or white and green leaves, and white or pink flowers. Another semi-shade toughie is Ajuga, and the low-growing Scutellarias can be pleasant, too. For full sun, and if you are safe with bees, Agastache will give you summer colour and is not greatly thirsty. My bulbs grow through all of these. So long as you don't vastly over-water, the bulbs should be fine....See MoreDwarf Mondo Grass in Tucson?

Comments (1)More than likely they yellowed because of lack of water, since foot traffic can disturbe soil structure. Do not aerate. A general fertilizer from Wal Mart will be fine. No need to cut back. I have raised it for years and unlike liriope it does need trimming back. Throw some manure or compost around so when spring rains come it should wash through. Comments (2)Mondo grass won't do what you seem to be seeking. I don't know of a "groundcover" other than a type of turf grass that meets the criteria as something for kids to play on. Now, you could consider whether you wanted to create a play area much like a playground, with bark mulch or some other product, in your yard, but there are maintenance, tracking mess, and other issues involved in those choices as well. Otherwise, I agree with Creatrix. If you can't do it yourself, you might see if there is a local lawn consultant that can analyze your situation--is the problem just shade, or tree root competition, compacted soil, pH, combination of all? These answers will influence what you can correct or not and what might grow there. Also, identify more specifically what you are trying to accomplish. How much room for kid's play do you need and what do they want to do that they can't do in the shady area? Playing football? Just trying to have some square footage that's not muddy? There may be different areas (sort of like micro-environments)--within the whole area you've got, so that maybe with planning you could have a small grassy area, a mulched area, a sitting area, etc....See Morescundog
