Plants for under 100 year old maple tree

I'm trying to find something to plant in the back corner of my small yard. On the other side of my fence is a 100 year old beautiful (but messy) maple tree.

The corner currently has a small Japanese painted fern which is growing slowing but seems to be quite happy and lamium which I want to take out since it looks terrible against the fern. I noticed today that my neighbour's tiger lilies have escaped and growing in the corner too.

My garden is entirely cool colours - pinks, purples, whites so I don't really want to include yellow, oranges or reds.

The other issue is because of the roots to the tree I can barely get into the ground - if I can get down 2" I'm lucky.

What can I plant that would grow well in that corner? It is definitely dry shade but also well protected.

It sounds like it might be a sliver maple?

I believe it is a silver maple too. Any thoughts what I can grow under it?

I'm nearly certain that's an (accursed) caragana. They are hardier than I can believe. Those are the yellow flowers in the picture, right? Some of them are more invasive than others, some have spines and some don't. I think the older plants were mostly planted to hold soil in place, which they're very good at. Do the seed pods make an audible "pop" when they are ripe, flinging seeds everywhere? Afterwards they would look like . . . this From Mystery plants or sometimes more spiralled. If it hasn't yet taken over the entire surrounding area, I suppose it might just be safe there. I'm currently trying to get rid of mine, and have read all sorts of discouraging things about how impossible it is to eradicate! It does have one winning feature (besides its hardiness). If I'm right, one can eat the flowers, and they are quite tasty - or at least the nectar in them is. Don't eat the seeds, though, they're very poisonous. Anyway, don't eat the flowers either, just in case I'm wrong!

i have planted about 750 trees.. and conifers on my 5 acres ... on glacial sand ... [lots of minis and dwarfs] AND NEVER FERT'D A SINGLE ONE ... PLEASE STOP FERTG THIS TREE .. very frankly .. your tree looks GREAT ... i never presume mother nature allows a perfect specimen ... and i would not waste time .. money.. nor exposure on treating for this rather minor blemish .. there is no way that little damage is in any way .. effecting those leaves ability to process sunshine and feed the tree [which is another reason it doesnt need fert] bottom line.. its a tree .. treat it as such.. it is not a child.. that needs feeding.. pampering.. etc .. and BTW ... if you fert the lawn.. this tree will get whatever it needs from that ... no need to double or triple up ... enjoy your tree.. dont fixate on it ... ken ps: my theory is.. the pix are sideways.. because you turned your gizmo to portrait pix ... to take pix of the tall tree ...

That's why I was hoping it would entice someone to want it, where it is now isn't a very large space and since it is so short it shades most of the bed once it leaf's out. I've got a whole lot of grass and very little growing space. It's a very common tree in my neighborhood and I am trying to add a little spice to my boring yard. I am going to place one of my potted brugmansia's in its place, it will be taller and let the lower plants have a chance. I posted it on Craigslist for $35 or trade hoping that it would move fast but so far no interest. Its a beautiful little tree and would be perfect for pot culture. I cannot bear to throw it away but I kept it all last year waiting for someone to want it and had no takers. I don't have the space to wait again this year. This weekend I might put up a few flyers in the neighborhood and see if any neighbors want it. Also if I had no other reason I grew up in a house that had a Green Japanese Maple and am slightly biased against the reds. What can I say? I am a Loyalist ;)

Just noticed this post - better late than never! I'm in Stouffville and have a large silver maple too. Under it I have a slightly raised bed that contains hostas, epimedium, lady's mantle, Hakonechloa macra `Aureola`, creeping jenny, trilliums and lots of other stuff. If you don't want to build a raised bed and you want to just plant in what you have now, I'd vote for epimediums and a ground cover like golden creeping jenny or periwinkle.

Vinca minor is about as indestructable a ground cover as I've found for difficult shady areas.

I have a large bed of hostas, ferns, and lady's mantle growing under a huge maple. I have the same problem with the roots and dryness. I also have some pink Dicentra formosa (Bleeding Heart "Luxuriant"), which goes nicely with my Japanese painted ferns.

One shade plant that you should stay away from - in case you haven't already tried it - is astilbe. I tried several varieties with no luck. I finally read somewhere that they don't like maple trees. I transplanted what was left of them to another shade garden (under an apple tree), and they're doing fantastic, so it really is true that they don't like maple trees.

I have a 100 year old silver maple too. I grow periwinkle on one side of the trunk, and gout weed on the other. They look good in the deep shade, and neither has been invasive, so I think the maple keeps them in check. I also have Solomon's Seal and some big leaf brugeras which look nice with the periwinkle.

Astilbes won't do well because the maples quickly drink up ALL the water.

pachysandra has been the only specimen to do well under our silver maple. it was estimated that our tree is about 150 years old. we have 3 on our property. i have tried different ferns, hosta and astilbe. it seems as though the ground just "sucked" them up! i am glad to learn about the astible and maple incompatabilities!

This is a pic of my bed under two old maples (last June). I have helebores, virginia bluebells, foxglove and trillium blooming in the early spring, followed by lots of columbine. Last year I added caladium and begonias for summer color.
