Mystery flowering tree/bush - 100+ years old

My neighbor lives in an old farmhouse that has been in his family for over 100 years. He has this flowering tree/large bush, that has been growing in his yard for as long as anyone in has family can remember. No one knows what it is, and none if his knowledgeable gardening friends has been able to ID it. I told him I'd help him out by hitting up the GardenWeb forums. I've had excellent luck in the past getting tricky gardening questions answered here(This is a new account, but I've been a member in past years).

I think I'd call this more of a bush than a tree, since it has many multiple trunks, and he's chopped it back now and then to keep it from taking over. I'd guess it's about 15 feet tall. The flowers and foliage are reminiscent of a pea plant, especially the flowers. The blooms are just starting to fade now. I live in SE WI. if that helps.

Sorry about the poor phote quality...my camera sucks.

Please let me know if you can help me out!
