Wow that was fast! Caragana it might be... A google image search pulled some images that were close, but I'm not completely sold on that yet. Any second opinions?

My first thought was black locust. What color were the flowers? Does it have thorns?

I'm nearly certain that's an (accursed) caragana. They are hardier than I can believe. Those are the yellow flowers in the picture, right? Some of them are more invasive than others, some have spines and some don't. I think the older plants were mostly planted to hold soil in place, which they're very good at. Do the seed pods make an audible "pop" when they are ripe, flinging seeds everywhere? Afterwards they would look like . . . this

or sometimes more spiralled. If it hasn't yet taken over the entire surrounding area, I suppose it might just be safe there. I'm currently trying to get rid of mine, and have read all sorts of discouraging things about how impossible it is to eradicate! It does have one winning feature (besides its hardiness). If I'm right, one can eat the flowers, and they are quite tasty - or at least the nectar in them is. Don't eat the seeds, though, they're very poisonous. Anyway, don't eat the flowers either, just in case I'm wrong!

The one in the first picture is a Caragana.

After looking over all of your helpful input, and a little research on the web, I'm 100% sure that this is a Caragana arborescens. And, yes the seed pods do look like the one pictured above. It seems that they're pretty common, I've just never seen one in my area.

I don't think I'll be eating any part of it. Just in case.

caragana IS NOT poison although for whatever reason most people seem to think it is. The seeds arent exceptionally tasty but they are certainly edible, kinda bland. Much research is being done to see if it can be used in the place of whaet and corn, in snacks and such since its bland taste would make it a decent backdrop for other flavors and textures. It will also grow anywhere including areas WAY to cold for most other food to grow.
There was a time when europeans thought tomatoes were poisoness since it is in the nightshade family. I read a early american story about the first guy to "bravely" eat a tomatoe. Kinda strange considering they say natives ating them all the time.

Well, you don't tell us what zone you live in, Harald, but I reckon from the yellow flowers partly hidden by the leaves, and from the leaves themselves, that it's a Cassia! Cassias, mind you, grow from tropical to warm temperate. in these areas some varieties can become weedy.

Regarding the poison issue:
Shortly after posting the above, I learned independently that caragana seeds are edible. Imagine my surprise . . . I think the reason that so many people think that they are is because it's safer to tell kids that something is poisonous if you're not sure one way or the other . . . I was a kid who would eat just about anything, so my parents categorized things as either "food" or "poisonous". I couldn't get confused that way. Maybe other people's parents did the same thing. Sorry, that was a bit off topic, but I couldn't resist.

Yes, well I still reckon it's a Cassia.

Original post gives Zone 5, much too cold for a Cassia.

Apart from the fact that the specimen shown looks just like a Caragana and does not look like a Cassia.

Some members of the pea family are poisonous, so better safe than sorry.
