Jack in the Pulpit

I have a couple of volunteers in my backyard wooded area. Some of the "berries" are turning red but some are still green. When will I be able to gather the seed?

I don't mind waiting, but my concern is that some birds or animals might eat them.

Hi Dave,
You need to wait until they are ripe, bright red. The stems will bend over at that point since bugs cart away the berries. I'm not sure if any animals bother with them. But since they could be carted off by bugs, you can put organza bags over them to prevent that. If you don't have a female pack rat around who has a few organza bags stashed away, you can pick them up at a craft store. Remy, thanks. And you are right. I have absolutely no idea what organza bags are. Thanks for the link to the picture. I do have netting like that (for protecting flowers in hybridizing), so I can use it for the Jack-in-the-pulpit berries too.

But do you think when they are bright red, they are ready? Or do I have to wait until they dry up?

Jacks move easily. Not sure where yours are in the growing process. Mine are just peeking out. If you dig deep enough and get a good clump it is possible to not even disturb the roots and corm. I have moved mine around my lot often. I have some in pots that do return each year. Now or after they begin die back are the best times. If you move them while they are blooming they may die out but will return next year. The lilac you can also dig a clump of root stock out. I was told doing this will shock the new clump and it will take five years to bloom..you may be better off just starting from nursery stock.

Some people use a soft paintbrush, but I think a q-tip should work. There is no harm in trying.I would google the plant blossoms and then google a pint anatomical drawing and make a guess. I live in a place where jack in the pulleys fear to tread so I will keep my mouth shut. I would look for stammers and pastels , however you spell it.

The "coating" needs to be removed if you want next year germination. However, if you are not in a hurry, you can just drop them in the soil, and Mother Nature will take care of that. If you clean them, be sure to wear gloves, as the coating will cause an itching reaction in most people. They do not like to stay in pots very long, so plant out at least by the next fall after germination.

They are usually red berries, and I love unusual plants, we grow heirloom plants and am willing to trade seeds for seeds. This is a great time to start them up here. if you do, let me know what you're looking for in seeds as a trade. thank you

Hi again,
No you do not have to wait for them to dry up. If you are worried if they are ripe enough though, wait for them to start to flop. You have to remove all the moist berry flesh. Then since they need stratification either pick a spot in your garden and plant or do the winter sowing method.
