Beautiful! I have a cat named Max, and he does this too! Stands guard in the trees. What a pretty dog. I love your Abe Darby and Julia Child-nice clear yellow. Your Hydrangeas look great. I bought one but it turned out it wasnt hardy here-ugh.

Thanks all for the nice comments! I really don't have many neighbors, except for the roving gangs of elk bulls. We live high up (4,700 ft) and it's pretty rural out here. Most of my friends who visit find it charming for about a day before they get the itch for the city life! The HP's and bourbons really like it here, and I do not have serious problems with powdery mildew. Blackspot is virtually nonexistent, and I know that this is the bane of most of the hp's and bourbons. Also, I applied what I learned on this board to my garden and it has made a world of difference, especially the use of compost, manure, and organic fertilizers. Mrs. Yamada I purchased from Hortico when they still carried it. I'm not sure why they don't carry it anymore.

Hi - We sell some old roses at the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden (Old City Cemetery) open garden every April - this year will be Apr 18th. Our usual college greenhouse hasn't been available so everybody's propagating at home (even Jeri is doing some for us) and our selection will be a bit random - lots of some varieties and not any of others. Hoffman von Fallersleben is one of our favorites and we usually have had it, since it's not widely in commerce, but this year I don't think anybody took cuttings of it. It would be great if you could come up for our open house, Masha, so long as you got home in time to get the guys into bed. We start at 9:30. You could bring the boys along - but they might get smeared with chocolate up here, because we usually have cookies and a very soft spot for little ones.(Daun's daughter had a cookie or two this year, I'm pretty sure.) Jeri's right about taking cuttings - it's just plain rude to do it in somebody else's garden without asking, whether or not it's public. We have roses that are diseased, or that we don't want cut for a variety of reasons. Very few of our roses are under patent, so that's not an issue, but it certainly would be at the Heritage or other public gardens. We also want people to use sterile pruners. And, we want to encourage people to buy from commercial vendors if roses are readily available. Our policy usually is that people who come help can take cuttings, but otherwise, it's on a case-by-case basis. Anita

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. My yard is just now "coming into being". We built the house about 15 years ago in the middle of a lot that only had sizable trees at the back of the pasture. We have planted all of the rest. It has taken years of hard work to get the soil in decent shape and for shrubs and stuff to get some size. I've pretty much done it with my shovel and wheelbarrow! And of course, it all takes a lot of $$$ which had to be spread out over time! Now if I could only have a sprinkler system installed my life would be SO much easier!

Thank you Jen for your kind words. I always tell my two girls that they are the prettiest flowers in my garden :o) Florence, Thank you for you sweet comments. My little one just loves to smell any flowers, when I'm at the computer browsing pictures on the forum, she climbes all over me to try and smell the flowers - lol, she just copies what she sees big sis and mommy doing - she does not know the difference of fragrance yet .. Thanks Char Rose - I got both mine in the garden early - they did not have a choice since they wanted to be with me, so I'd have them out in the stroller or playpen while I was planting, and they kind of got into it that way - both girls love to "help" me water and dead-head .... you can imagine how that goes!!! lol Gary, I totally agree with you on Ronald Reagan - I try and plant roses with fragrance, but every now and then I get one just because it's so beautiful - Ronald Reagan is one of them. One of my top performers - I'm always amazed at how long the blooms last - on the bush and also in the vase. Carol - Ronald Reagan really is a great rose - I can't say about how it will survive your winters though, since we have the mildest winters here ... and I also adore my Flutterbye, love the way it changes colours ... aprille

Jen, have you ever tried growing "Endless Summer Hydrangea" or "Forever & Ever Hydrangea"? Both varities are quite cold hardy, they should fair well in your zone. Both bloom on new wood, so even if the entire plant dies down in the winter, you'll be getting flowers in the summer from the new branches.

Diane, I am so in love with roses, it's not even funny. The family calls me "obsessed". But I can't help it, they bring so much joy and are so beautiful.

msmsik, the rose to the left of Max is "Trumpeter", the 2 on his right are "Scentimental" and an un-named "Patio Rose" from Wal Mart.

Patricia, there are 11 pictures in total, which ones are you having trouble with? I'll never figure out why there's an "x" to the left of each image. I must be doing something wrong when I give the path to the picture. :(

Carla, I've got 2 of those dogs, the other one didn't make it into the picture, but none of them dig at all. Here are both of them, and I know that they don't belong here, but I just couldn't resist. Hope nobody minds.

Carla, they're Bernese Mountain Dogs. Max (on the left) is 122 lbs. and Simon (laying down) is 95 lbs.

Yes, some Shelties have the identical markings, so do Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs (only with a short coat).

Nah, I would never dream of weeding every day. Once a week, sometimes twice, depending on how badly they're growing. We made the huge mistake 5 years ago and planted Trumpet Vine against the back fence. If I had known how invasive that thing would be, I would have never planted it (anywhere). That thing is sending out suckers and runners all over the place, which I do have to pull out on a regular basis or it'll suffocate all the other plants. :( From what I've heard and read, it's basically near impossible to get rid of the trumpet vine now. The hummingbirds love it, my neighbors are probably cursing me out, and it's sure keeping me busy.

Wendy, Max and Simon look very lovable. I hear you on the vines. There must have been Morning Glory planted here at some time and it still comes back every year and in different areas, the gift that keeps on giving!!
