When to plant Hollyhock seed for next year?

I had one hollyhock this year. It did well, a double yellow flower. When do I harvest the seed? how do I handle them? When do I start the seed for next years crop? or would they start and bloom yet this year if I started them now? I live on the coast of southern NC.

I cut the seeds from the mama when they are brown and dry. Some may start to open, that is o.k.

I leave them in the pods and store them in paper coin envelopes that I buy at the office supply.

This is my first experience with hollyhocks, and I am just totally thrilled. My friend in Idaho shared seeds with me, and I planted them in the spring last year. I have lots of babies in the garden that reseeded from the mama. I am going to put them where I want them to grow. I think they will make it through our winter just fine, I worry more about the heat of our summer. I am also going to sow some seeds and try and keep track of their progress, so I know more about what I am doing with them.

My hollyhock is red, and grew to about 10 feet, covered in beautiful dark green foliage and gorgeous red flowers. I am happy to share seeds. Would you have a yellow seed pod to share?

OR is that allowed here? Just slap me if it is not. I am not familiar with the customs on this forum.

Well, folks--they're biannual. If you sow them now, fresh, they should germinate and grow into nice little plants this season. That means they may bloom next year--so why wait to plant till next spring? Same with columbine if you have that seed, too. Also, this will speed up the blooming wait on oriental poppies and lupine--

Just my 2 cents. This is what I do, and it works for me :)

One issue that may be confusing some is that the USDA hardiness zones ONLY apply to winter low temperatures. Summer heat or humidity or annual rainfall, etc, have absolutely no association with these zones. The only zone one should care about is the lowest one listed....that is what determines if the plant will survive winter in your location. Any other zones are just an attempt by the grower to included factors into the equation that simply cannot be addressed by this zonal system nor were they ever intended to!! btw, just to emphasize this mistake, I am also in a zone 9 climate and common foxgloves have naturalized throughout my area and grow wild!! Zone 9 is not directly associated with summer heat.....only lack of severe winter cold . Period. If you have concerns about the plant's appropriateness for your location and you live on the west coast, then check out the Sunset Western Garden Book. Their zonal system is much broader and DOES take into consideration other factors. btw, all the plants you list are just fine for Sunset zone 18 :-) I would sow any of the seeds now and with the plants in question, direct sow in the garden rather than start indoors or in pots. And if by 'fairy wand' you mean Dierama pulcherrimum, that is normally started by corms, not seed.

It really depends what seeds you have. I shall assume you mean tall bearded iris, and say YES they will keep for a few years. The main problem I would expect is that the longer they are dormant the longer it will take for them to break dormancy. I quite often get seeds germinating over a year from planting, and this year I have some germinating more than 2 years since planting. Germination rates might decrease a little also. Good luck with your changes. I believe we make our own peace and happiness, depending on our choices and the level of our expectations. Be happy with simple things, and find peace in the garden. Gardening is an excellent way to overcome difficult times, so get back out there in the garden ASAP. Cheers, Jan in Australia

I agree, go for it, starting with the daylilies (I just did some of mine) but only if you are in an area that hasn't ikmposed a water restriction. I also divided up the Montauks as well, and I also did some of the hostas and anemones. Heat doesn't seem to be the main problem for us on Cape Ann - it's lack of water. If you can keep your plants moist, they will have plenty of time to get established, develop a root system, and store food for winter and early spring. I don't know about anyone else but I find that hostas and anemones always appear wilty for days to weeks after I transplant. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, I'm not quite sure, but they always do seem to bounce back and thrive. Despite the several weeks of vintense heat and little rain, and despite a modest watering ban, our garden did very well this year. We used SoilMoist to give us some leeway with the drought and it's been very, very effective. The thing to do is to get it down by the roots. I use a stray and herb funnel to do it. We went back and put some by all of our roses, shrubs, and perennials (about half of them so far) and when I plant anything now, we automatically use it. Between that and capturing water when it has rained, our gardens are looking pretty dandy, and although the top layer of garden soil is bone dry and hard, the roots are getting enough moisture from with the SoilMoist to sustain the plants.

Thanks for the information Dave. And thanks for providing the search link, I always forget about the search link. I had heard/read that starting from seed is less desirable, but I figured since I got in the seed I would use it- and give myself some time to get the bed set up. I figure if by the time the bed is ready to go, if I'm not happy with what I got from seed, I can get crowns of another sort at the time. I'm patient, and figure I probably won't see anything till at least 2020. I also figured that the wet area in the sun would be the best spot, but I wasn't sure. It's big enough that I can probably expand it a bit more as time and need go on. That drive is about 200 feet long, but I figure the usable area is more around 150 feet long- and of that I figured starting out with a 20-40 foot long patch was reasonable. Maybe I'll end up with two patches, one from seed starts, and one from crowns. Reason I figured around 60-80 pound a year is because my husband and I can go through 30-40 pound a year. I pick it up by the 10 pound bag when the local farm starts selling it in the spring. Now that I have mom and sis living with us, and they love asparagus too, I figured the increase. But then, if it were free out of my garden instead of buying it, we might end up eating more than we currently do. So maybe 60-80 pounds is too conservative an estimate.

So you do that with poppies up in Wisconsin too? I hadn't thought about that. They would not survive the winter would they? Or do the poppies not sprout until the following spring. I tried planting some here in zone 7 last fall and sure enough they came up with the first glimpse of spring.
Still experimenting with poppies, they are most interesting flowers.
