Hi riceke, thanks for the response. I have never grown tomatoes from seed (on purpose anyway). I was lurking in the greenhouse forum since my greenhouse is getting close to being put into use and saw this wonderful thread complete with photos on someone's success in growing Better Boys from seed and then training them as vines along a suspended cattle panel in their greenhouse which looks very similar to mine in approximate size, shape, etc...It looked like a real space-saving technique. I have always done well with Better Boys in the garden and just wanted to get some additional takes on growing them from seed, preferably from folks in my neck of the woods. I have also been conversing with that thread's original poster too and have alot of info to work with. I didn't even know hobby gardeners could grow named market hybrids from seed until I saw her post. Now I'm a little more knowledgeable about F1 and F2 seed generations. Still would love to hear about anyone else's experiences growing Better Boys from F1 (first generation) seed. Specifically tips on germination rates, success and care of young seedlings. I've grown melons, cukes and some flowers from seed so I'm not a total seed growing noob but I am when it comes to starting toms from seed. Danielle

Hi Dirtslinger, I just answered your question over on e the veggie forum, lol, with the link below. That being said, you didn't ask about hybrids before. You don't know what the babies will be. They could be similar to the parent or very different depending on the lineage used to create that hybrid. "I just don't want anything reverting to nasty old wild-stock!" There is no way of knowing if crossed babies will taste good or not. Crookneck squash and zucchini are both Cucurbita pepo. So yes they will cross. FAQ, FAQ, FAQ....blah, blah, blah....geez you waste more time posting that people should do searches and check the FAQ than if you would just answer the person's question. **** John, the reason that the FAQ on preventing cross pollination was done was for the very fact that so many people ask questions about cross pollination and it has helped many folks who have read it. And no way can anyone take the time to type out all that's in that FAQ nor can they speak to the many pictures there. As I recall you were here at GW when all those new FAQ's were written so you know what I'm saying, that is, making available to folks a lot of information that already has been written and then if the person still has questions they can post those questions in the thread that they initiated/ Carolyn

I don't know about Moreton Hybrid but I dehybridized Ramapo F1 many years ago and last I knew many folks were using the F6 or F7 generation and perhaps more and all was well. Below I linked to the page of Ramapo, the OP, at Tania's great tomato data base site. I see no seed source for it but I know it's been passed around at several message sites. If interested you might want to see if anyone has it by going to the seed exchange here at GW, for at least one place. I have no fresh seeds I can send you and as you can see the dates on the page below you'll know why. I did it when it was announced that Ramapo F1 was going out of production, and of course Rutgers reintroduced the F1 several years ago. The person Ed Ryan referred to in the page was at one time a large commercial tomato grower in NJ and he felt that my OP selection was just as good as the original F1.
