California sages

I ordered some California sages and desert penstemons this past January(I don't know what got into me). Here in southest Pa it's humid and rains alot my soil is full of rocks and clay and very moist. I was wondering if I could put these plants in a window tBox and use cactus sand and potting soil to grow in Would this be better than planting them in heavy wet clay soil.Would they survive and thrive has anyone tried this before? Thank you

Sarah,

Many of the semi-desert and desert Salvias and Penstemon can take more moisture than they are used to getting in nature, but it is important to give them very good drainage to avoid root rot. I think your idea about a window box or a raised garden with the proper soil would work well for the summer months, but I'm not certain what winter would bring...

Many Penstemon are short-lived and treated like annuals, so these may fare better from year to year if you are able to save seed, (some species take two years to flower).

The only California sage I've grown with any success is S. clevelandii. I've got it in a terra cotta pot, in a mix of potting soil, perlite, permatill, and grani-grit. I usually bring it in during the winter, but this past year was unusually mild and dry in NC so I left it outside most of the time. I think I just brought it in once or twice when we had freezing rain. I've tried a number of southwestern penstemons but none of them ever looked very happy and all of them eventually died, despite my best efforts to select species that are more tolerant of moisture.

This is on my "wants" list!! I would love to try some! If you can spare enough for a 4'x4' square (16 good plants) that would be awesome! If enough for two squares, even better! Please check my list, I have a pretty good variety of heirloom tomatoes and some other heirloom veggies, herbs, and tall zinnias that are great for cutting. When I first moved here, the yard was an unkempt mess of weeds that were 2 feet high. Because the yard had been neglected for so many years, the weeds actually naturally composted down into the clay soil so the soil wasn't that bad. There were a lot of weed seeds, so we solarized it by covering it with plastic bags. I tried clear plastic and black plastic, and the black plastic worked. The clear plastic just had a green house effect, and did not work. The heat of the sun killed off the seeds and living weeds. This took 6 months. Then I dug up the soil, about 1 and a half feet deep, and added Kellogg's Amend. That was two years ago. I have only added mulch to the top of the soil, and the red cedar decorative bark. The plants are thriving, but I want to make sure the soil doesn't get too dense, since it's been a couple of years since I've amended it. I've been adding earthworms that I find under plant pots, and that seems to help. I am hesitant to use kitchen scraps or anything else that would attact vermin or pests, because I live across the street from a school that has giant cockroaches. I also have rodents and opossums.

California Native Sage Festival--March 22 at RSABG

Suzi, the closest freeway is the 210 which runs thru northern Claremont, near the RSABG. The 10 runs thru south Claremont and is also a convenient way to get to the botanic gardens. Kermit, GNN Claremont does have its own propagator (Antonio Sanchez) but they also order and sell plants from other nurseries such as Suncrest (great for Rosa minutifolia, one of my favorite roses, and also for the blue curls cultivar Midnight Magic), El Nativo Growers, Native Sons, Moosa Creek, etc. Just this past week I was at the nursery and bought some bouteloua gracilis 'Blonde Ambition' and white California poppies grown by Native Sons as well as a ceanothus 'Diamond Heights' grown by El Nativo, Melica californica grown by Suncrest, seacliff buckwheat and sea dahlia grown by Moosa Creek plus monkey flowers, creeping wild rye, and another Saliva dorrii Gayle Nielson grown by RSABG. Ordered thru RSABG 5 one gallon size of Salvia 'Celestial Blue' (this one along with S. namaensis, S. melissodora, and S. Teresa are the most prolific bloomers in my garden). Moosa Creek has them in stock, so I expect that is where they will get them. I sure wouldn't mind seeing even more goodies available, particularly in salvias.;) The one I want most that I don't already have is Salvia mohavensis. Btw, I don't think RSABG toots its own horn enough--lots of scientists there, and horn-tooting doesn't appear to be in their genes!;) I'm just a happy member of the garden (certainly no scientist), love to grow native plants, and will gladly tell others about my experiences. Which Penstemons?
I have several Penstemons that have done really well in my garden. None that I have grown from seed have succumbed to winter weather(the ones that can't tolerate it never germinated with winter sowing-seeds probably rotted), but I have lost a lot of western Agastaches & Salvia 'Pozo Blue' to wet winters. If you plant in raised beds, you may want to use smooth rocks as mulch so as to keep the water away from the trunk. Also try to keep the stem protected, I have read that you can tape over a broken stem so I doesn't fill with water.
It is really tricky to find the right spot. Plant it too high & it may need some water in a dry winter like last.
I wonder if planting on my sloped area would keep the water off...
Why do we eastern folk want western gardens?

Hi Karen ,

Not sure on all the names as about 7 were grown from seed. I put four species in one milk jug(times 5) & when they mixed together(duh!) I could only guess at what had germinated. Have a look at my flickr page of Salvias, Agastaches, and Penstemons. These pictures were taken last year, I have added quite a few to my collection since.
