A great San's contest at Chonburi THAILAND

Yesterday I was invited to be a judge for the San's contest.

The contest was a part of "Chonburi International Flora Exhibition 2008"

which hold at Chonburi's City Hall, east coast of Thailand.

Before the judgement time, I and my friend visited to a San shop.

Mr. Bunlue Lodwan, the president of Thai Sansevieria Club with his pride,
variegated San. 'Samurai' (the Arabian's San. 'Salaf' which could be a San. rorida complex)

Great research and identity pairing. But I am still in belief that the true nummulariodes is still a different animal. I was introduced many many eyars ago to a hoya that was called H. sp.aff. nummularioides. This plant was very different looking than what the one called Geri = "nummularioides" = pubera and other names suggested by TG. The plant called aff. nummularioides had true coin-like leaves, rounded and like the size of grapes. Since TG had called what we grow today as nummularioides, the name aff. nummularioides was used. The flowers was somewhat similar but different and seasonal flowering also experienced. I do not know what happened to this species as I have not seen it again. But the plant alone resembled what you would call a "money" plant due to its nearly round thin leaves. I believe it is still out there but either in someone's collection as an unknown or hopefully still in the wild. It's a diminutive species so it could be less conspicuous than others.

Thanks for posting these pictures, those are some spectacular plants! I would love to move to Thailand, or at least travel around there someday. Why is it that it appears to be the land of unique cultivars, plentiful hybrids, and rare species when it comes to plants such as Euphorbia milli, Aglaonemas, Adeniums, Crotons, and apparently, Sansevierias as well. Am I missing anything? Why is it that nurseries in Thailand seem to always produce the coolest plants and come up with all these crazy looking cultivars, interesting hybrids, and rare mutations? Is it something in the water they drink? lol

My God! Where can I get my hands on one of those? I have never seen any of the albino, variegated, or long yellows sold anywhere here! How I have always longed for one of these unusuals and yet they are a dime a dozen there, or maybe more. Thank You

Vitorama, They may be using food coloring....maybe. Is there is anyone here old enough to remember way back in the days of yore when schools actually had money available for teaching? In elementary school (before color TV) our 3rd grade teacher had us fill a two glass containers (this was before the fear of glass breaking and threats of lawsuits) with water. One with warm water and the other with cold water. We added food coloring to each then added a stalk of celery. The celery in the warm water container was first to absorb color. Movement of molecules etc. Ok I'm done. Lol k

Hi...where do all those gorgeous sanse come from (and where do they go)?? Would love to take care of one or two (preferably ALL of them..he..he).
Have to admit you guys in Thailand do know how to get the very best of plants (and I don't just mean sanse)

Hanhan, are you from Indonesia? If yes, than that makes two of us...
My collection of sanse is still quite limited, do you know where we can get good variety (at a cheap price, of course)...

Wow!!! How happy I am to feel the same way in my local nursery. My $5 sans thrill me. I can't get involved in the hi-priced ones. I can see the relationship with agavies and aloes. Thanks for the pictures. It was a dream vacation to Thailand.

Very well grown specimens. You need good spacing with well defined light to grow sansevierias to these qualities.

I can't help and ROFLOL by seeing the pedestals for the plants. Are these made from tree trunks or are they fake? This is so funny to see this.

The Sansevieria Samurai variegated would easily make variegated pups from cutting up the leaves and planting them in moist vermiculite and perlite.
