I'm really kicking myself for not entering this in the show today. So I'll just share it with you guys instead. My camera refused to get the red right this time. It really isn't pink at all. Lol.

Love this rose...it is such a work horse in my garden. Your pictures are very nice. BIG blooms that hold forever on the bush. Lesley

Not in your zone but...they're both lovely red roses. VH will have fewer blooms but they'll be gorgeous exhibition form on long stems with no fragrance. CB will have a lot more blooms, some in sprays, in a more decorative form with a good fragrance. It's up to you what you prefer. They both have about the same disease resistance which is fairly good but will spot some for me. For anyone else interested they're both very winter hardy.

Oh gosh, mine is a monster! It gets a good 6 feet tall every season no matter how far I have to prune it back in the spring. But it's typically tall and narrow like most HTs. It blooms in flushes with about an 6 week cycle so I usually only get 3 flushes. But they're gorgeous and huge and last on the bush for at least a week if I let them. It's fairly healthy although it will spot some but it's never defoliated on me. It's potted on the patio where it gets the best sun. It's been very winter hardy too. All in all I'm very pleased with mine.

John, if you decide to prune your VH now, I would love to have cuttings. My only success with rooting roses seems to be starting hardwood cuttings in November. Last year I pruned mine in February and tried to root lots of cuttings with no success. September Morn is new this year from Rogue Valley Roses, but isn't big enough for cuttings yet. I've just finished trading some Brugmansia cuttings and won't be able to take more cuttings of some species. Let me know what your interested in and I'll check.

Thank you, frnchcuffs! I've now had them for about a year..and they're both doing well. Here are my thoughts... veterans honor - I love! I think this and firefighter are my favorite red roses. I love the bloom size, the longevity of the blooms when cut, the subtle raspberry fragrance, and how the red doesn't blue with age (like mr.lincoln). Pretty long rest time between flushes. black magic - is almost constantly in bloom, the color is nice..a bit darker than usual, but the blooms are really small. I had heard this about black magic before..so it is true..tiny blooms! Still pretty, but no fragrance. im excited to see how well they do in their second season.

It's a powerhouse for sure! I ended up with close to ten HUGE (all about the size of this one), practically perfect roses this flush. And if that wasn't enough, it's pushing up it's biggest basal yet at an almost alarming rate of speed.
I've always loved Veteran, but it was never really one of my favorite roses.I think I may have been a bit hasty in my decision...;0)

My camera has problem with reds too.

Wow nice form! I kick myself every time I see someone post a pic of this one. I had this rose as a test rose way back in the late 90s and gave it away because I didn't have much room and red is not my favorite color. Now I wish I hadn't given it away. Oh sure, I could buy a new one, but I somehow just can't seem to do it. It's always nice to see pics of other people's blooms tho.
