sans leaf mushy?

Hi, am a beginner and just got my first sans.
I just looked yesterday and noticed that the leaf is kinda mushy near the roots and there is old brown and wrinkled bits of leaf at the base of the plant.

When I lifted the pot a bit of water dripped. I could not trace the source but I think its from the mushy translucent bit

Please note: I have not watered it as its been raining steadily for the entire week.

Also, just noticed many tiny lil spiders have built their webs all over the leafs overnight!

Hi,

I can't see your pic,just a link w/ some Chinese writing.

Pls. know that anything mushy is rotting & needs to be cut off immediately (mushy = rot & can spread quickly). Apply a bit of ordinary cinnamon where you've made the cut & then sterilize the knife if you need to cut again.

I grow indoors only, have no experience w/ insects, sorry.

Has your plant been outside in the rain for a week?

I don't think spider mites get on Sans, probably just a regular sac of spider eggs that hatched.

Any fruit in a pot needs a mix that drains well. If it stays too wet roots won't grow in the wet portion. Planting a small tree in that big of a pot will, for many folks, lead to over watering. It won't need water again until it leafs out, then not much until it grows a lot. Figs generally leaf out late. As long as the bark is green when scratched, the tree is still alive. It will probably leaf out in the next month or two.

I'm in north San Diego County and I have about a dozen fig trees in pots.and half a dozen more in the ground. All but one of the trees in the ground never dropped their leaves over the winter. Of the potted figs, all but two or three put on leaves over the past week. Oh, and one of the in-ground figs that kept its figs through the winter is currently dropping it's old leaves while at the same time sprouting new ones. Your timing may be different depending on the variety of fig you have, the potting mix, watering, your micro-climate, etc. Since your tree is young and was recently transplanted, keep it out of direct sun for at least a couple months. Put it either in some filtered shade or in an area that is shaded during the hottest part of the day. Anyway, I think it is too soon to worry about it.

Stush knows way more about Sans than I do, but I think a watering or temperature issue is more likely than a pathogen, or is at least the root of a problem if it is a pathogen. I recently learned with a little experiment that heat is the most important element to growing Sans. Your room is too cool for it to grow, so it isn't using any water. Under those conditions, even a 50:50 mix will retain too much moisture, and the "moist zone" of your water meter is almost certainly too wet. I lost 3 of 4 Bantel's Sensation offsets before I learned this lesson. You might check my post titled "what a difference a little heat makes" to see for yourself how heat affects sans, and a cheap way to warm them in a cool room. Different cultivars are easier or harder to grow, also. Those with lots of variegation, e.g., less deep green tissue, don't have as much chlorophyll and therefore grow more slowly and are more susceptible to rot. Bantel's Sensation, Silver Hahnii, and Golden Hahnii are just three common cultivars that are more challenging to grow. If you don't know your cultivar, a photo would help. You might have a particularly tough one. If I encountered the problem you're having, I'd 1st take Stush's advice, but I'd also forego the water meter and let the plant all but dry out. I use a bamboo skewer to test my soil. I stick it all the way down to the bottom of the pot, wait a few seconds, then pull it up. When a Sans isn't actively growing, the skewer should just feel cool to your upper lip or cheek about halfway up the height of the pot. That means there's just barely enough moisture to keep the root hairs from shriveling up. I have a large Sans in less-than-ideal soil and too cool over the winter. To prevent rot, I use a strong stream from a squirt bottle to shoot a few streams right down into the soil every couple months or so (depends on your humidity, etc.). The moisture is quickly dispersed in the soil without me ever having to soak any part of it. When the weather warms up, I'll have to soak the plant in a bucket a few minutes to rehydrate any peat that has become hydrophobic from drying too much, but the squirt method kept it from rotting over the cold, damp winter (70% humidity and 55-65 degrees). Hope those ideas help, and you don't lose your plant.

Try removing all the dead stuff from the stump and if there is any rot cut back to healthy tissue. Let it callous over for a few days out of direct sun light but not in dark conditions. If you wanted some people dust the cut stem with cinnamon.then place in either soil with at least 50% perlite or into perlite itself ( I use the dirt/perlite myself) and keep it just moist but definitely not damp. Keep in good light out off direct sun and normal room temperature. Oh, I recomend using say a 3 or 3.5 inch clay pot with only enough soil to cover up that stem base to just below the leaves, this is a temporary situation as you are trying to root it. The pot rim should support the plant so it doesn't tip over. Good luck. It is possible that it did not have enough water and light. Gritty mix by it's very nature dries quickly so it needs to be watered more than standard potting soils. Sansevieria are said to grow in low light, that is not totally true; they survive in low light for a long time. They thrive in Bright indirect light and warm temperatures. Fred

Sans like to be on the dry side. I did see a picture of wild growing Sans. tri~ hahnii growing in a stream. It was in a hot area in Australia. I asked the person for a update and didn't get one. Not normal and may have been staged. You can increase the drainage of your soil where you planted yours sans.

Ah I see.
I live on the 12th floor of an apartment and placed the pot outside along the corridor. the rainwater has been dripping off from the floor upstairs onto the corridor.
The spiders look like normal spiders.

So I repotted my plant.
However, what I assumed to be coco coir seems to be the sans roots itself?

Does anyone know if the roots of a young plant are that easily breakable?
Also, the plant had a wet sourish smell.

How can I tell if it has root rot?

Sans roots tend to be orange, at least for the kind I have. Breaking them is not a problem. More will grow, and I usually remove at least half of them on purpose anyway when repotting. If there are any that are mushy, get rid of them - those are rotting. Root rot = mushy roots. If there is some kind of sour odor, that's not good - somethings's decomposing. Hopefully it was something in the old soil, not your plant.

Let it get VERY dry before watering again, the fresh soil should help. Did you wash off the old soil before repotting? If not, you may want to do that, then let it dry for a day or two before putting it back in its' pot. Let the soil get dry every time before you water when it's cooler. Only when it's in tons of sun and heat will it need much water, but at no time will it tolerate sitting in soggy, stagnant soil.

Hi, I agree w/ most of what's written above except

This is simply not true & I believe could be quite misleading. I've killed more than a couple of Sans. by UNDERWATERING, so I would not take that particular advice. You'll have to watch the plant & learn to water more when it's actively growing vs. less water when it's not.
