Hi Cactiboi, I'm sorry but I have to disagree w/ Katie's advice on this. I grow a lot of Sans. (not this one tho') & just gave a talk on Sans. earlier this week. Some people feel this type of Sans. is much more sensitive to overwatering than most others. Therefore, I strongly advice AGAINST washing it off w/ water, but DO get it out of that mix & throw that mix out. Start over w/ an unglazed clay pot, using cactus & succulent mix w/ abt 30% more perlite (or pumice if you can get it). If you can't get C&S mix, try a houseplant mix w/out peat if possible. I say NEVEAR wash a succulent plant, that's the last thing it needs. I heard you that these plants were hard to find, but as a general rule, don't buy succulents w/ mushy leaves, they're usually too far gone to save. Must leaves = rot = fatal & deadly. If this were my plant, after I removed it from the existing mix & pot, I'd leave it out unpotted in the open air to dry out more fully, then repot in the mix I suggested in unglazed clay. If you can salvage a single healthy leaf, you might try starting a new one just from the leaf, tho' I don't know if it will retain its golden stripe(s), likely not. Good luck w/ it.

There are so many answers to your question. First, there is really no such thing as a pot being "too big". You could plant it in a 20 gallon barrel for that matter. The size of the pot along with the planting media can affect how the plant grows. For example, the plant is likely to produce more babies (offshoots) quicker if planted in a smaller container. Secondly, the size of the pot along with the planting media will help determine how often the plant needs to be watered. Sans planted in bigger pots will generally need to be watered less often. Also, well drained soil is even more critical in a larger pot. This may also be an important consideration if you are leaving the plant outside where it gets rain. Finally, the size of the plant will determine how small of a pot you can use. Obviously, an 8" diameter plant is not going to fit into a 6" pot. I have Sans planted in containers ranging from 2" to 8". Most are in 6" pots. If they keep growing at the rate they are now, I'm going to have to repot them into 8" or bigger pots.

It sounds as if there is hope. I would remove them from the pots if the soil is still even damp. Total dryness would not hurt. Leaving them sit on newspaper would do, but just leaving their roots flapping in the breeze wouldn't hurt a bit, if no newspaper handy. This particular plant dies most often from overwatering. They can be a challenge even for experienced growers. That is why mine are all the way, back in a corner, where I have to actually work and aim with my weird IKEA watercan to hit the pot. Take off all the mushy, damaged leaves, using scissors, snips, or even a sharp knife. Often, just the rotting leaves can cause a problem with plants that are in a downward spiral. Then, leave them to go bone dry. After they form a good callous and are completely dried pot up in your choice of pot, TC or plastic, with a good, pourous, well draining soil. Chances are these plants won't need messing with (repotting or moving up in pot size) for a couple of years, so it makes sense to start with a good quality soil. Then figure out on what rotation they need watered at. You can leave them until wrinkles start to show up, but that is a mite extreme. You want to find a happy medium between soaked and dry wrinkles. Mine go from 10 days to 6 weeks sometimes without a thorough soaking. I have actually had regular sans depotted, sitting, waiting for attention for over six months, just flapping in the breeze. This is NOT the recommended treatment, and the plants do NOT look good from this care. It can take five years to reverse this type of plant maintenance, but when you have oodles and gobs... where do you put those leaves you just trimmed off, or the plantlets you just seperated? These are tough plants, I tell ya! Good luck with yours!

Planto, Great find. I also saw some planters made up like you said with a gold hahnii in it but for $20, was too steep. I only wanted the gold hahnii. I went back two weeks and they were gone. I think they hit the clearance rack. All the sans there were soaking in water. The hanging plants were bone dry. Yours looks great. Did you happen to see any starts of pups coming? Stush
