Hi, everyone... Sadly I don't often get to post nice pics, because of problems of thrips singing the edges of my rose petals, since I don't use pesticides...

but here are a few...

Aromatherapy had the worst time with thrips, so I was only able to get one photo.

My beautiful but maddeningly flat-smelling Queen ElizabethÂ(no thrips because it has pathetic fragrance LOL!)

Gemini turned out to be the most facile of roses, it was always! Changing colors and forms on me, a lovely sweet fragranceÂ and it brought my first bee to my garden

Thanks Krista, Karl, HoovB, Petaloid, John and Jim for all your thoughts and input...Karl yes, I am hoping that Gemini will deepen in its colors at least with the leaves, but ugh, Gemini has about as much wisdom and common sense as I have. Instead of storing up chlorophyll in its leaves and tender stems, being patient, strengthening and taking its time to develop and mature, Gemini is trying to send up another flush immediately. 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve: A baby blossom bud emerged 3/4" above its sheath of leaves (fully extended "neck"). I predicted 4 other buds as well, because I started seeing the tell-tale signs of the 2 5-leaflet tender enclosed "prongs". As soon as I see a split 2 5-leaflet stem fork outwards, usually a baby bud is nested within the "sheath". New Year's Day Another 4 flower buds emerged. I give Gemini its 2nd Gardenville feeding (got delayed by a few days). January 2nd I have another one flower bud nested and emerging, and 6 very suspicious pronged stems to deal with. Total count will be 12 flower buds so far (6 definite). Sadly my house is way too large and drafty for me to do any humidity control via Karl's suggestion so all I can do is cross my fingers and shake my head at this craziness. I am expecting blackspot to strike any moment because it is a pattern of Gemini to get sick whenever it goes through a spurt of blooms. I dare not decrease the h. oil/Greencure at this point like I originally intended. Predicted survival of buds into mature blooms is only 20% at this time. Leaves and stems are way too soft and pale to support blooms!!! Why Gemini is trying to send up another flush is beyond me! Gemini is as kooky and insane as me (sigh-I think it is a "mind-reader" LOL). Jim, still no problems with spider mites... John, I have a fragrance-sport Gemini that consistently had a wonderful scent while growing outside and that is the one HUGE thing that I miss terribly. But my sport Gemini is also a BS magnet-Sport as well. Gemini is supposed to be known for its health and beauty, but mine flunks the BS test whenever it goes through a flush...It gets extremely sick and ugly, but it is also a fighter rose as well and a few weeks after the flush it will make another comeback. Tomorrow I will post a sample photo of the baby flower buds. P.S. Eluane gives everyone a puppy kiss. She is glad HoovB and Petaloid are mentioning her instead of stupid Mama fussing over some messy rose, LOL!

Late frosts are indeed killers. Roses that looked the picture of survivability, with plenty of healthy green canes that survived the winter can be cut back to the ground by a spring frost, after breaking dormancy with good new growth emerging forth. The length of the frost and the low temps reached are critical factors. Also, come early spring apparently nice green canes sprouting new growth can suddenly begin to decline and die back, turning black, without any contributory frosts after dormancy break to cause the calamity. What has occurred is these canes were actually severely damaged at some point during the winter and just have not shown it until now. I breath a sigh of disbelief when after spring pruning to nice live looking, rich green, white pithed canes, some of these visually very much alive looking canes soon turn black and die back, often to the ground. No late frosts were involved at all. These canes were doomed to die, but didn't show it at first. You may get new good growth from below ground. Give them some more time. If by June, there's no evidence of life, then dig them out. Moses

Me too, Nik; unfortunately I have jungle only right around the house; the big garden is very much the garrigue look, since that's all that will grow. I do what I can. Garrigue can be beautiful too, after all. Ingrid, I have another phlomis that has whiter leaves than this one: it may be your variety. I've never seen a photo of CdC that captured her color, and have been taking pictures myself without succeeding. She is an astonishingly beautiful rose, and even if the flowers usually burn after a few hours is well worth having in the garden. The only Tea I know that rivals her for vividness is her counterpart across the way, 'Clementina Carbonieri', who has more gold in her coloring. Jackie, I know we worship the same garden gods; and Sheila is apparently heading for the same altar. I value structure in a garden, but tidiness ranks low among my priorities. Carol, I've posted about "Miss Mystery" before, seeking an ID. She's a Tea I received as a cutting from a gardener in Genoa who didn't know her name, and which I've never identified, either, though I'm not knowledgeable about Teas. Her most notable characteristics are her large size and her tendency for her blooms to ball. She's about eight years old, and may only now be maturing--I do hope her blooms will open better as she gets older--and looks like she wants to climb, or at least, looks like I'll have to train her to climb if she's to have the room she requires.

Some bouquets of fragrant roses bought from Roses Unlimited. My all-time favorites from RU are: Sonia Rykiel (a dozen blooms per flush in 1st year as own-root), Versigny (the scent is worth buying), Poseidon (going to frost with 30+ buds), Summer Sun (compact & small for a Kordes rose), Savannah (non-stop blooming), Pink Peace (great for the vase), Sweet Mademoiselle and Firefighter (both last 5 days in the vase), Betty White, Twilight Zone, About Face, Liv Tyler, and many Austins that RU sold before 2021. Below upper pink is Sonia Rykiel, dark red is the Dark Lady (from RU): Below dark red is Munstead Wood, and and orange About Face, red is Firefighter. Below orange is America, light pinks are Gene Boerner (thornless), and blue is Poseidon. Big red is Peter Mayle (survives 5+ years in my zone 5a winter): Below yellows are Moonlight Romantica (smells just as good as Golden Cel). Upper light pinks are Princess Charlene de Monaco (now 10' x 3') needs space. Blue is Poseidon lasts 5 days. Below deep oranges are Sweet Mademoiselle, light left pink is Savannah, and reds are the Dark Lady (going into Nov. frost with many buds): Below bouquet is picked Oct. 29, 2023 before frost. Red is Veteran's Honor. Pink is Radio Times, white is Bolero, dark pink is Dee-lish, and dark red is the Dark Lady. All are from Roses Unlimited. Below large dark pink is Peter Mayle (eucalytus rose scent, so unique), light pinks are Evelyn, deep pink is Comte de Chambord, gaudy orange is Solitude (worth having for hot summer). Liv Tyler (right deep pink) never ball like Sweet Mademoiselle, Liv Tyler gives twice more blooms than Sweet M. Left dark pink is Pink Peace (worth buying with its buttercream frosting scent). Right light pink is Frederic Mistral (petals get spoiled often in rainy climate, worse than Betty White) Below was Liv Tyler in my garden at above 90 F, it's best for hot climate.

Such gorgeous Gemini pics. This rose certainly has a gorgeous semi-open look. Form reminds me of Pristine ('78) but New York and Anne Morrow Lindbergh are listed as parents. Wonder if Pristine figures in their lineage.

awww, thanks everyone! I do admit I have a very pathetic collection of photos currently, because of those pesky thrips, but am hoping that given time, my garden will balance out organically...

Jeff, please post your Gemini so that we can see what beauties they are! Your photos will do them true justice, it is such a remarkable flower because it keeps changing form and colors, and I think your photos would be perfect! for illustrating this...I promise not to cry! hee-hee-hee! Even my best Gemini pics still have staining and scars from thrips.... So on Bounty of Blooms (part 4) I am so looking forward to Gemini pics hurray...! I am sure everyone will instantly fall in love with your Gemini and buy one for themselves!

My Gemini didn't do as well this year as last. I think a late cold snap froze the new tender growth. However it has put out several new basal breaks, so I should have some flowers soon. The first pic is from this year, the others from last.

...when they do bloom this 2009! Hurrray!!! how totally awesome and dddddelightful!!! You see your photos do true justice to the Gemini because you can see its high-petalled formation, especially! on the side view closeups.. You get full flawless, absolutely breathtaking creams and pinks so it is so nice to see this instead of constant scarring from thrips. My camera cannot get as close as yours because I don't have a super closeup lens yet! maybe for Christmas from my rich, overly generous doctor brother LOL!...but then again, I'd only get bigger and bolder Attack of the Thrips movie poster imaging, lol! Interestingly you are in NJ so it seems your Gemini is far more even in colorations than mine... Mine will undergo a lot of color fluctuations within its bloom life, maybe because we get baking intense, scorching sun in Kansas? as opposed to less direct Northern sun where you're at...

What a joy to see your Gemini! perhaps we can rename this thread to Gemini in blooms (Part I)! hugs and cheers to your Gemini!

Your Gemini is certainly a beautiful rose. Thanks for showing a few of your roses. Maybe the July heat will stop the thrip and the flush will be healthier then.

I have the same problem with thrip, more than with any other pest. Isn't it remarkable how they can affect buds from some rose varieties more than others.
