Most of My Roses Suddenly Died

Back in early spring we had a warm spell; early-mid March, central Maryland. Stems were greening up, leaves were forming Then we had a very cold snap. I didn't think too much about it; weather is given to wide swings in spring. When I next went out to inspect the garden in early April, many - most - of my 20 or so plants were DEAD STICKS. WHHHHAAAT? No growth coming up from the bottom now, either. Even during our severe polar vortexs of a few years ago I didn't lose nearly as many, and many came back up from the roots.
I'm trying to understand what happened. Was it the fact they'd started to come back and then there was a deep freeze? I know it was a scandal how many of the famouse Cherry blossom trees were lost in DC this year due to this early warmth followed by deep freeze. But, in my mind - spring weather swings are "normal".

Could so many of my roses succumbed to this temperature rollar coaster?

Was there something I could've done to save them?

Maybe it was something else........ ?

I had done my regular pruning in Feb, while still dormant.

The ones that made it through (although diminished) were 3 Belinda's Dream, Cinco de Mayo, a couple of "Forever and Ever" roses (kinda new to my garden).
