Late May & Early June Blooms from Michigan (lots of photos!)

Please enjoy these photos from my 2nd year garden! What a joy growing roses has become. Some were (and are) still slow to start but some are blooming like crazy! Thanks for letting me share and thanks for all of your help on the main rose message board! -- Andrea

Lady Diana -- this is from my new bush, I have one from last year too that made it through the winter and I adore the light pink blooms

Oh my, you have a lot of beauties there! All your stripers are nice, but I especially like All American Magic and Henri Matisse. Great little minis also--too bad the grocery stores don't put names on them.

But loveliest of all is Akebono! That is my favorite blend of colors, and what an impressive shape to the bloom also. Tell me more about Akebono.

I'm kind of in love with Grimaldi and George Burns... especially George Burns. That yellow/red stripe combo is really something I want to get my hands on one of these days.

In my area, there is a local greenhouse that sells(individual) 'Champagne Bubbles' (F1 Hybrid), in 6" wide, short (half?)pots, while in full bloom. But here in VA. that is during late April, early May & this variety may not be as winter hardy in your zone, as an F2 variety, as explained by Stokes seeds catalog (online) Of course, you'd have to wrap the pots, something like florists do, for use on a table. Cut individually, very low near the base, may last up to three days at most. Never did sear them... As for alpine poppies, those may require too deep of a pot, or massive sowing about now, outdoors & may last just a couple days at most, if temperatures are cool. Blooms are quite small & stems very short! I have seen a bouquet of Shirley poppies that my uncle bought for my aunt, in Southern California from a roadside stand, that last about 5 days, for her birthday in June. But, those were cut in 'bunches', much lower down the stalk & not an individual flower stem. They were numerous blooms, of various colors, accomplished by cutting each bunch, much lower down the stalk, to make a more lasting bouquet.. I have no idea with even attempting something anything like this, using the oriental poppy, unless there is a huge patch located at some abandoned house or yard, somewhere up in Michigan. I would suggest consulting a florist, about what becomes available at that time of year, or make plans to order in advance. Besides, I have no idea what is in bloom locally that far north, on that given date, Peonies, or Lilacs, or Lily of the Valley. Possibly, you may just end up keeping it as uncomplicated as possible & simply resorting to buying roses, or carnations ?

I think hard pruning will be just as temporary as any pruning. It will come back the same way. The best way to get the back to grow is to remove some of the front. That is what is shading the back. If you want a more uniform looking plant, you need to open it up. This results in a healthier plant with good air flow and light getting to all parts. Another trick is to paint the fence (at least that part) white so more light gets to the back. Also, heavy doses of nitrogen will weaken the plant and may prevent it from blooming. A good balanced rhododendron fertilizer is a much better choice. Rhododendrons are easy to move. They have very shallow roots. If you could just move it out from the fence, things would improve.

It looks like HF Young, but there are a bunch of clematis that have similar color and bloom time that it could be, including Fujimusume, Silmakivi, Lasurstern, Zara, Cezanne, and Diana's Delight. There are also some with similar color that bloom a bit later, including Prince Charles.

Nummy - I guess it was me who bumped it up. I'm fairly new to this forum and I remember one post you had earlier in the season and how lovely your roses were. I hadn't seen anything else of yours and was curious, so I did a search and this one came up, didn't notice it said 2012, I thought I had missed it. Doesn't matter though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. You have really good taste in roses!

Your roses look great, love them all! The stripes are all interesting and the combinations are nice, especially Henri Matisse. I really like your Dick Clark bush, what a pretty rose!

Kate -- I do not know much about Akebono. I recently became interested in Japanese roses after falling for Mikado and looking into the history of the hybridizer. (even though Akebono and Mikado have different hybridizers) That's one thing I just love about roses, all have a story and there is so much to learn. I looked up the minis on the Kordes site (the label said it was a Kordes rose) and I think it is Pink Poetry Kordana.

Lothlin -- Yeah, George Burns makes quite a statement! Grimaldi is loaded with blooms, so even though the opened form isn't my favorite, the splashes of color make it a keeper!

Sara-Ann -- thank you! I was surprised at how nice the Dick Clark bush looked on only it's second year.

Holy cow Andrea, did you buy out Roses Unlimited last year! LOL It's ok, I just ordered 10 I think from their summer sale this week :) Last year I bought Grimaldi from RU too, but it doesn't seem to like the high humidity here. It never holds its leaves, and hasn't even thought about blooming. It's still in a pot, so I may stick it in the ground and see what happens.

Lady Diana and Mojave are just beautiful and flawless! Love them. Also love the colro of George Burns, I need to get him one of these years.

I'm sorry I lost Montezuma during work. I love the color and elegance of this rose. So pretty in bouquets with white flowers. One of my top 3 favs of 1950's roses.

You captured the unique brick-y color very well!! Thanks.
