Pretty. In the third picture, what are the blue flowers in the foreground and the blue one towards the back? Just curious.

Thank you. The blue flowers are thyme in the foreground, and perennial phlox at the back.

Bestlawn, no offense taken. I'm kind of playing it by ear. While at first I was out to prove that KBG can survive here, My big thing is that I believe in reasonable amounts of maintenance and not wasting money and not wasting time and not driving an hour away to get some professional product during business hours. There is a correlation between the performance of the grass and how much time/money I will spend on it. The minute performance goes down, the minute I leave it alone and go do something else. I don't have it in me to force the entire yard to stay green in full sun and heat in a drought when we get maybe one or two showers a month. Some people can. The golf course manage to do it. But I don't. I'm trying to simulate reasonable amounts of care to see if the grass will grow with average care. I basically follow the UGA lawn calendar for tall fescue on all the cool season grass that I have except the bentgrass which I mow much shorter. And the only reason I put so much effort into the bentgrass is because it performs. It's reasonable IMO. Auteck, please send me an email. Click on my page. I also grew up in So.Fl. and we seem to have the same tastes in flora. I can tell you about what I'm growing. It's apparent we are both allergic to tropical plants and swamp grasses. I can't stand palm trees and bananas. Some people here try to plant them. Douglas fir is a more out-westy tree. If you want to prove you're not in Miami anymore, get some balam firs, red spruce and fraser firs going. The latter two are native to the mts of western NC. I saw some this past saturday when I drove up there. I have a couple of balsam firs in my yard. also have 3 white pines. White pines are native to my area but not all that common this far to the south. You might also try out some of the cool climate birches, Betula lenta (sweet birch) and B. papyrifera (paper birch) Don't forget quaking aspen and lilac and blue spruce. These are just a handful of things people insist do not grow here. I say they're wrong. It's called reverse zone denial.

Thanks, Jana, also for the photos of your absolutely stunning ramblers, wow! Beales also had Paul's Himalayan Musk, what a beauty! I wish it repeated though. Does Excelsea repeat? Thanks, George. I bribed customs - just kidding! Well, we now live in Cambridge, England, and so do our roses. So this was only a short trip for us to London. Transporting the potted roses, including the two climbers, with taxis and trains was however a bit tricky. At King's Cross train station I very nearly scratched a few people by inadvertantly waving around the lanky Sir Paul Smith. Entering MacDo there to change our little one's diapers proved to be another challenge. Imagine surprise howls at the doorstep - but at least our baby didn't get scratched ;-). Should we come back to the US, we will have to leave our roses behind and start from scratch - again. Cheers, Andrea

Jana, thanks for the info on Tantau's Nostalgic series. I'll take a look at Piano. I actually also got a Chippendale this spring, and mine has not bloomed yet either, so I guess we can compare notes later this year. I also remember looking at Heidi Klum, so any more info and pics on yours will certainly be appreciated. Princess Alexandra of Kent is not that vivid, but of a deeper pink with a very distinct smoky salmon tint, quite nice actually. Lots of petals in nice formation, it looks superb when it slowly unfolds. It lasts quite well on the bush and in the vase too. I really like its scent, old rose with tea, I'd say. Young Lycidas is of a very vivid color, but I'd put him more into the purple-cerise group. Toward the end his huge blooms fade into a nice soft mauve. And the fragrance is really superb. Claire Austin, now that's a very very vigorous, extremely healthy rose (basically no BS in my no-spray garden), and a very good bloomer too so far. Looks like it wants to be a climber. Its flowers open light lemon fading to white or cream white, with a complex myrrhy scent, not too bad. It blooms in clusters and the blooms are very cup shaped. It's pretty, but I think it just looks a little pale somehow, perhaps because it doesn't quite have the radiant quality of say, Margaret Merrill or even Fair Bianca, and the blooms tend to not quite fully open, staying cupped pretty much until the petals drop. Currently, mine is a tall arching shrub (in its second year with me), but I think it'll look better with some support as a climber, perhaps next to a dark red rose like WS2K. Anyway, so far it has proven to be an excellent garden rose, so I can certainly recommend it. Roselovr, sounds all very good, especially if you're already familiar and comfortable with Nikon and perhaps own some Nikon glass already - did you get the D5000? We'd certainly love to see some pictures! Andrea

Welllll... :) If you see my badly spelled Photinia thread (hate we can't edit those too!), you will see the size a photinia bush really likes to be. They have their place, but it is NOT next to a foundation unless you really enjoy clipping bushes! Also, be careful how close you plant to a foundation. It is tempting to plant too close when the plants are so small. They look funny when they are placed where they should be at full grown size! Bradford pears are beautiful in the spring, but they are super weak trees. Ice storms maul them frequently. I really like my chaste/vitex tree. It is also a softer wood/small tree, but the blooms are great (scent maybe less so) and butterflies and hummingbirds love it. I haven't had any branches taken out by an ice storm yet, but it grows very quickly and blooms on new wood. I love crape myrtle trees...the large ones. They provide bloom at a nice lull in the season. If you have a sunnier spot for vines...passionvine (passiflora) (the purple ones, the red will kill the caterpillars) is a host plant for the gulf fritillary butterfly. The caterpillars are dark orange with black spikes....VERY cool to a little kid. They are easy to raise too. So, more what to plant, than not to plant there :) but I'm sure someone will chime in!

Hi Masha, nice to see that you are posting pics again!

Purple Pavement looks amazing! Usually I am not too fond of roses that show their yellow stamens, but I have to say this one I like a lot.
Christopher Marlow has truly produced a perfect bloom. Nice combination of CM with the pink plant in the background. Is that a verbena?
I love the last photo of the little herb bed with Sophie's Perpetual in the center. The color of SP is one of my favorite rose colors and I really like the flower shape. Can you tell me a little bit about how this rose is doing for you?

Don't want to forget to mention, that I noticed that you always do such a nice job in combining roses with other plants. I think that is an art and you are really good at it!

Organic, thank you very much for your nice comments. Funny I don't generally like roses that show their stamens either, but then I bought the Imposter, Lyda, SGMC, and Purple Pavement, and find that I can actually enjoy them all. It is nice to have some variety.
Yes, the plant next to CM is verbena. It seems to like my yard:-).
Sophie's Perpetual is a little band that I received from Vintage this winter. It is doing really really well. It seems to want to bloom more than to grow. It seems to be a spreading very healthy little bush. The flowers have many shades of color to them and are very fragrant. I am glad I got it.

Masha, thanks for the response.

I have thought about combining roses with verbenas for a while, but I am still at the stage where I try to put in the bigger plants (roses and architectural plants) in the garden first and the "fillers" (don't like that word, but use it in lack of a better one) will come later. On the other hand I just happened to see a pale lilac verbena at Home Depot for sale yesterday. Maybe I should go back and get that one and make an exception. Hmmm... your photo is really inspiring for me and it is good to know that verbenas do well for you.

Again your Sophie's Perpetual is really lovely, thanks for giving me some more information about it. I have to check this rose out a little more, it is interesting that you mention that the flowers have many shades of color. I didn't notice that consciously, when I looked at your photo the first time, but now I realize it and I bet it is even more obvious, when you see this rose in person. There are always too many beautiful roses out there that I don't have...

Organic, the only verbena that does well for me is the creeping type. The bushy ones have all died:-(. I hope you will post pictures when you are done planting.

They are all very lovely. Purple pavement sounds like a groundcover rose. That name reminds me of the Drivers' Ed movie, 'Red Pavement'. Rose names are so creative.

Thank you, Becky. I have read somewhere that Pavement is a mistranslation of the German word Bedding. There is a whole family of roses in the Pavement series. So it is not a ground cover rose but a regular shrub, although not as big as some other rugosas.

Masha, indeed I went back to Home Depot today again and bought not one but six of the light lavender colored verbenas! Was just thinking I need more than one so that they can have a real color impact, one plant would just be lost color-wise in between the roses. Unfortunately I saw your comment regarding the creeping vs bushy verbenas only now, yikes! My verbena plants are not specifically labeled, but I think I got the creeping variety! I will try to post a pic of them soon! Maybe you can verify, if I got the creeping ones?!
