How to get the wife involved... In the hobby

Hi guys and gals,

I just had to post this to give my wife a little recognition lol. I recently (2 weeks ago) had back surgery. Needless to say I can not bend over to pick my peppers. My wife has been a fan of my hobby only to the point of knowing I have a hobby... She never really got involved until now as far as picking. Over the past couple weeks she has picked a couple hundred pods off the plants and she is learning the pepper type names and heat level etc... She just wont eat any unless it is a Jalapeno lol.

The picture below is what she picked today. I have hundreds still on the over 40 plants. I hope the weather will hold out for another two weeks or so, so the wife can pick them :)

Sorry for the rant, I just had to give my appreciation to me wife Melissa.

Hey Susan - nothing wrong with going to Chinatown for the fish and veggies. I shop there as often as possible, and in the Brooklyn Chinatown too. You can't beat the prices and the selection is great. Dean and Deluca is where you go for stuff that they don't have in Chinatown - prepared food, pastries(!), imported olive oils and vinegars, specialty salts, etc. Actually, a D&D certificate sounds like a great gift for people who are foodies. What a good idea. Now I'm hungry. Gotta run - one of my wife's students is singing at the Met tonight and we need to go have dinner first. But it occurs to me after all this dinner talk - wanna have dinner some time? If I would have thought of it earlier, I would have suggested tonight.

I love houses and getting the chance to look inside, so I kind of like House Hunters. (It's a rare treat to see any of the shows, so I haven't had the chance to get too sick of them.) The realtors can be annoying, because they often seem to know as little as the buyers. I'm often shocked at the compromises people make in their original goal, or what priorities they use in buying a house they claim they want to live in for the next 20 yrs. On one we saw when dd was in the hospital, a couple chose a house weighted heavily by the suitability of the back yard for their wedding. 1 day. 1 event. And after, like other shows, watching several episodes in a row (Is that how cable TV works?!), I had to wonder if married couples ever shop for houses. I'm a traditionalist, so was surprised to see that the majority of shows were with young boyfriend-girlfriend sets. One girlfriend intended to take both of the master bedroom walk-in closets to herself, since 'I worked hard to build my own credit and I'm putting that on the line for this house.' Oh, yeah...that relationship was going to last... Her 'beloved' was told he could keep his stuff in the closet off his basement office. HH Internat'l is too out there for me... Guess I just can't relate, as a non-traveler..and someone without millions to spend on a 2nd home. I like to imagine myself in the scenario and that will just never happen.

Let me tell you that if I saw pictures of my DH in bed with another woman, even fully clothed, he'd have lots of explaining to do. But, after finding these pics and seeing as how she was hiding her phone and finding out why....I'd just wait it out and see what her future and current behavior is. If she has plans, meetings or outings that are out of norm for her, I'd check those out. If her appearance changes as far as weight, hairdo, clothing...I'd look into the reasons why. If she went looking elsewhere because you're stubborn and a non- talker, then change your style because it ain't working for you. If you want things to work, then you both need to meet in the middle. She may have slept with this man. but if she did and you love her and don't want to lose her then just deal with it. It may have been just a fling to prove that someone else found her attractive because you didn't make her feel that way. if she's got what she wants at home, she won't go looking elsewhere. Hope it works out for you.

I am a lawyer in California and the reason nobody can help you so far is that you have left out information that is important. If you were divorced in California go down to the courthouse and pull the file. Look at the entry of judgment--what is the date of the divorce? Whats the date of the new marriage? If you were divorced in another state, get the record, its not difficult. Bring that info to a family law attorney and they can tell you what your rights are. There is no common law marriage in this state but there may be some help anyway. If it was an error in the record, maybe it could be corrected. You are not a domestic partner unless you register as one in this state and there are restrictions. You may need to approach this from a real estate legal standpoint, if its not a valid marriage. The name on the deed probably was changed during refinance, it could happen. You probably signed a bunch of papers you didn't read, but the next time you sign anything that gets notarized and you have to put your thumbprint in the notary book in California I suggest you go out for coffee instead. If you have a realtor friend, have them pull all of the deeds back to when the property was purchased. Take all of this stuff to a family law attorney who also knows something about real estate. All of these documents are important, no attorney can give you any advice until they see them. By the way, its not so easy to throw you out of the house. I would want to know why your credit was bad and hers wasn't. Don't you file joint tax returns? I suspect there is a lot of paperwork that you never look at. Start now. Pick an attorney near where you live, this is an involved problem and you need to solve it now.

Nice... as someone recently married (one month yesterday), it's good to know I have someone who I can put to work on my plants if I need it. :)

Bill,

You're a lucky guy.. a couple years ago i had a surgery. It was early in the year, outpatient, i came home took an extra pain pill with a couple beers and resumed planting seeds. My wife won't touch them. In fact she locks herself in the bedroom when i am cutting or grinding them

Maybe gardening is like science fiction in that you're either into it or you're not. My wife is into science fiction and gardening but I'll pass on both. Unless the women in the science fiction are hot, then I can suffer through an episode or two.

Lucky indeed! My DH *might* pick some peppers, *might* water them if I was away or laid up, but no way would he plant seeds, mist them, rotate flats on a heat mat, or any of that. I can sort of trust him to weed once things are established (he can tell the difference between a transplant - with cutworm collar - and weeds, or head lettuce, carrots, etc. and weeds once they're pretty well grown) but if something doesn't have a fruit or a root (carrot, beet, turnip) he recognizes, it had *better* be in a row with several others just like it b/c he pulls anything that's "out of line".

My husband grew one Datil pepper this year. I'm afraid to even go near it. I got burnt by touching a Habanero plant years ago and being in intense pain for 8 hours. Don't you have to wear gloves to pick hot peppers?

my wife loves hot peppers, and loves the things made with them. she won't take any part in growing them though. "that's your hobby" she says. she also looks at me like a goof when I go on about how cool some of the weird ones look.

Yeah, I don't even eat the really hot ones, DH and DS eat jalapenos and serranos like they're nothing and enjoy the hotter ones, but neither of them will have anything to do with the plants. At least I got DH to help make salsa once this year, and DS made some poppers!

Nice gal you have there Bill. I, myself, am rather tentative asking for garden help. That way, I don't end up lashing out when I see something amiss.

Zackey: nah. I've never had any residual capsaicin from simply harvesting.

Good to hear you got some help. Does that Owl really keep the squirrels away? I saw one nibble a Ghost that I had hung on a tomato plant, and it ran around like a chicken with it's head cut off. Didn't try that again.
DW won't pick or even wash dishes when I've been making sauce or canning. She claims that "everything's too hot."
'Course, it's a double standard. I gotta help with all the hibiscus, Bouganvillas, roses, et al all year.
Is that a Lemon Drop? Those make a good fresh salsa...

Thanks all, some good stories.

TomT226, I don't have a problem with squirrels but I do have a problem with Birds. It does help keep the birds away that's for sure. The pepper you see is a Yellow Bhut. They are thin and long for some reason but they do have the heat and taste of a Bhut. I think it may be a cross.

Bill, glad the wife is able and willing to save your season for you and I hope the surgery went well and recovery is 100%.
That being said, I don't think I will be signing up for any surgery any time soon in the hopes of getting the wife involved in my pepper growing. But if I do need any kind of surgery in the near future, I will be sure to milk it for all it is worth in getting the wife out there.
