Cuttings and a Mister!

Ive just started a new batch of rose cuttings after seeing a post on here of rose cuttings and misting. The idea was to make you own mister with pvc pipe and putting your cuttings in builders sand and you get rooting two weeks time outside in full sun with constant misting. Anyway I only had play sand and a flower box to to start them in.

But the idea of this post is about a hose mister I found online which I have been using for about a month now . It is not your normal hose attachment which has several different modes of spray. This one is made for only ultra fine mist spray. Following is a link to mine in action which I put on you tube. Its called "orbit mistand" If it leaks at the hose connection back off a little at the brass mister nozzles. I got mine for about $10 and I love it.

This looks similar to mister sold at Home Depot in the garden section.

I am more interested in your progress with the root cuttings. After a month what is your success rate and what variety of cutting you are striking?

In warm temps it takes me about 4 weeks for good roots using a mister and a timer. I have fairly good results though, more than I can plant and give away.

Yeshwant91, you might want to pay closest attention to testimonials from other rose growers near you/in your region. But here's my 2 cents' worth, anyway. If you are seeking a tall fragrant red, as you say, Mr. Lincoln fits the bill--much taller than Papa Meilland by most accounts. I have not grown PM yet, mine (virus indexed) is due to arrive from Roses Unlimited next week, as is Chrysler Imperial. I HAVE grown Mr. Lincoln, both in cool western Washington State, and in hot and humid Mobile Alabama. Both places this rose grew very tall. In Mobile it was easily 8 feet tall, too tall for my preference. In Washington it had a rich deep red color, did not "blue" nor "blow" so quickly as in Mobile, and the blooms were terrific. It also was respectably productive. It would be my pick for fragrant red in a cool summer climate (along with the much smaller Deep Secret!), but I found Mr. L's quality a little disappointing in the Gulf South. Others on the Gulf Coast I know disagree with me, though. I'm excited about Papa Meilland, largely because of ceterum's long-standing rave reviews of him. But many reviews say his form and fragrance are unsurpassed. (yea!) Chrysler Imperial is a much lighter red. I had a cheap (almost certainly) virused plant of it from Walmart a couple years back. Hey, for $4 I thought I'd try it as a disposable. The plant was runty but the blooms, when they came, were wonderful. I'm quite excited to get a healthy specimen (knock on wood) from Roses Unlimited. Healthy CIs are known to be one of the more prolific bloomers, as well as having the same long cutting stems as Papa M. and Mr. Lincoln, and similar Damask fragrance too. If you haven't already done so, check out the photos and descriptions and comments on both roses at helpmefind.com/roses. Raptorfan, I have grown Ingrid Bergman, but only for a year and a half. As rich a blood red color as they come, but the bloom form is variable, and I detect not even a slight fragrance. Perhaps bloom form is better with a mature bush? IB gets quite variable reviews on fragrance. Veteran's Honor is definitely more fragrant, and consistently excellent form, though the color is not quite so rich. Both are impressively prolific bloomers.

Temps here last week were in the 80s, so everything started really popping up and blooms pooping open. Very nice today too. Worked in the garden this morning wearing shorts and a tank top and my favorite flip-flops. So nice. I let My Girls out for an hour this morning to scratch around and eat bugs and grass. They have begun to lay eggs again and need the new grass to stimulate their egg production. They followed me around, clucking happily and singing their little sighing songs. So cute! The Jane Magnolia tree's flower buds have suddenly begun to swell and there are three flowers beginning to open. I sniffed one and oh, that sweet, one-of-a-kind fragrance! The honeybees and Hummingbird moths are out in droves today supping nectar from the purple Henbit flowers in the grass and visiting all the flowering shrubs. I've even seen butterflies for the past two weeks. Tulips preparing to bloom and hundreds of yellow jonquils, daffodils and purple Muscari Grape Hyacinths are blooming. Hostas and Peonies are poking their noses up through the soft earth and looking good. I could go on and on... The weather radio report yesterday predicts there will be lows in the mid-thirties in the next few days, dropping down into the low-20s on Friday night. Ain't that just DUCKY! If that happens, even if it is just for one night or one hour, I will surely bid a fond but sad farewell to most, if not all, of this year's spring flowers. .I can just kiss the Apricots goodbye...again...for a second year. It will spoil all the new tender growth on the roses and send all the little seedlings popping up in the garden to coldest Purgatory, Glad I didn't set out the Cole crops and onion sets. Unreal

There is a staff member at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in California who has written a book (as yet unpublished as far as I know) about using roses in making desserts. She has used the roses to make rose water as well as using the petals in cookies or other goodies. Her name is Judy Polinsky (sp?). I went to rose events where Judy served many of these desserts (they were DELICIOUS) and happened to ask a bunch of questions about which roses were in what, which roses tasted good, which bad, etc. She told me they had tested at least 2,000 varieties of roses the Huntington grew to see which were the best. I don't remember all the info she shared. I keep hoping that her book will come out. You could call or email the Huntington to see how to contact her for more information. One of the desserts I liked best were cookies made with rose petals, yum! Judy told me the petals were from the Austin rose William Shakespeare 2000. There is also some information on Help Me Find Roses about a man in Germany who liked rose hip jam and how he raised a bunch of roses in order to select ones to make the jam. mgleason, Henry Kushka (I hope I've got the name right) posted the following link a while ago I believe. I have used it and it seems to work, especially on keeping the furry type mold from growing. I don't know how it would do on established blackspot. My guess is that, though the plant has blackspot now, it will still root, and that the new leaves may be prone to the existing blackspot. However, once the plant is overwintered, and the canes are cut back to the soil level, all fungii will also be removed with the canes, so one needn't worry. You would be disappointed to visit my propagation area this year because I never bothered taking any cuttings. But if you ever show up, we can tour the major private gardens in the immediate area, and some of the owners are as good as I am or better at growing from cuttings. One friend has a beds of various favourites grown from one mother plant, hybrid teas like Double Delight, much to the contrary of those who say one can't grow strong HTs on their own roots. That's a great problem to have, hey.

What timer and time period are being used? How much area is covered by your setup, do you have a wind block...etc.

I set the mister to go off for 15 minutes every 2 hours, no wind block. Just set up the mister over a bin of builders sand. I find I can re use the sand about 6 times. I dip the ends of cutting in rooting hormone powder.

This just seems to work for me.

Is this a raised bed? Is there a certain time of year that does best?
I had various results last summer. It seemed most rose varieties worked best in spring. Then later in in mid summer the same method and varieties did not produce. Late in the summer my numbers again began to climb but not as much as in early spring.

Seems the best time is early spring, with sand mix, and misting
I am in Zone 8A.

I use a big black plastic bin bought at Lowes (used for mixing concrete) with holes drilled for drainage. Holds roughly 4-5 bag of builders sand. The warmer temps seem to make the rooting easier.
My sweet husband is going to make me a new propagation table for Christmas and I will post pictures of it.

I have many cuttings out right now. I don't mess with a mister system. I put all of my cuttings in the ground. I put plastic jugs over them, or liter pop bottles. I spray them white so they are opaque. That way the sun won't burn them. I have 95%take and I've been taking cuttings for many years. I have some rare and hard to find roses I got from Rose shows over the years

Roses can be rooted almost any time of year. I have had very good results placing the cuttings under intermittent mist. About 10 seconds every 15 minutes is about right. I start after the spring bloom with this method. I have found that a well draing potting mix works best with the modern Hybrid Teas, Florabundas, minis, mini-flors, etc. You can use sand for the OGR'S.I use a Dig 5006-IP timer with dramm mist sticks.
