Papa Meilland
Comments (14)Shifferle, please excuse the belated response, but I just saw this thread while looking for references to Red Masterpiece, a rose I just ordered today own-root from Heirloom. My climate is completely different from yours, but here's my 2 cents' worth anyway. I have Papa M on its own roots. Mine is lanky, kind of tall, not at all a landscape bush, and the blooms blow very quickly on the bush. Also not the most prolific (mine is just 2 years old) but not horribly stingy either. Produces in flushes every 5-6 weeks, but just a couple or few at a time. If I manage to notice and cut the buds at just the right stage, they will complete the bloom cycle in a vase, and as cut flowers they are terrific! Mine have lasted a week and a half in my climate-controlled office. They start out rich deep red but transform into intense deep purple--not the ugly bluish faded red but dark purple. The scent lasts nearly the entire life of the cut flower. Beautiful form, too! BUT...seeing as you are concerned with spraying--which this one needs, I'll second the above comment about Deep Secret. This rose has considerably smaller blooms, and they don't last quite as long for me cut. But the fragrance is equally fantastic, and the bush is far hardier than Papa M. (a lot thornier too, but nobody's perfect, lol). The color is wonderful intense red in the center with black shadings on outer petals. The centers are not pinpoint exhibition, but the half-open blooms look wonderful. I'm about to replace Deep Secret with that Red Masterpiece I mentioned, because the heat here is too much for the plant--it looks dried out much of the time compared to the other roses; might be a bit susceptible to chemical burn, too, and I spray! But in your climate it should do great--at least give you quality spring and fall blooms and make it through the winter well. I've never seen disease on mine. Best wishes, whatever you choose. Comments (32)I've grown Mister Lincoln on and off for many years, and more often than not it takes on magenta/bluish shades. Those of you that posted magenta pink pics of Mister Lincoln...In my opinion, you definitely have the right variety, sometimes that's just how it looks. It's the marketing for 50+ years that's always described Mister Lincoln as the quintessential red, in truth it's not always that red. Back in the late 60s when it was introduced, I think it was rightly considered very red. But the standard is higher now, with the introduction of roses like Olympiad and Veterans Honor, which are a far purer, true red. Mister Lincoln also opens too fast and doesn't last as long as those newer reds. It is still probably the best of the old 'reds' , a strong grower with very good fragrance. I think Firefighter is the best compromise between old and new reds...it is quite red, still very fragrant, and very generous in bloom....See MorePapa Meilland or Red Masterpiece?
Comments (13)Thanks for the additional input. I have considered Crimson Glory for some time, but the questionable staying power and short stems are what have caused me to hesitate. I really am looking for a good, HT smelly rose for cutting. I recently changed jobs (I'm a social worker) and went from 100% computer and phone work in a cubicle to having my own office and seeing clients in it. So I've spruced it up a bit and have a couple decorative large bud vases in it and a small vase for minis on my desk. I want to have fresh cut roses in there as much of the time as possible, so now the cut flower qualities are more important to me than ever. I used to just want nice garden display. Sounds like I really should favor Papa Meilland, here. That means waiting on Hocus Pocus/Black Beauty. But hey! I already have deep red Deep Secret and the nearly black miniflora Memphis Magic. To me, it looks like a 3/4 size Black Beauty. No scent on that one, either. If I get Papa Meilland from Northland Rosarium, I have to get a second rose, and I'm considering either Jardins de Bagatelle for its reputation for fragrance, or Memoire, a white Kordes rose I'd never heard of, but which the American Rose Society Encyclopedia says is highly regarded in many countries, and which has impressive photos on Helpmefind. Or maybe there's another good source for Papa M. that won't require me to buy several roses at once? Any other thought/musings/input is still welcome. Thanks, all. Mike...See MoreThe Mr. Lincoln. Comments (35)So I got my hands on Mister Lincoln this year and it's growing a lot in the all day sun. I have a huge problem with sun scorch on the blooms. They start out fine, but as soon as they start to open up, by the end of the day, they're toast. Mine are in pots on their own roots. Peak temps are about mid 90s with humidity. I've done my best to give them plenty of water, but it still happens. I can see from Cody's pics they don't mind a lot of sun, so I'm not sure what my problem is. Is it because they're so young? Should I move them, or wait for them to mature more?...See Moreaggierose
