OK, thanks Dave. I did read that on NCHFP, that's why I asked whether to boil it, the recipe just didn't say. I figured that if you didn't have enough brine after boiling/simmering/filtering, you'd make up fresh in the same proportions as original brine and top off with that. Don't some recipes call for adding vinegar to stop (or slow) the fermentation? The "brine" in this recipe calls for vinegar, too, hence my confusion (I don't know why this recipe calls for vinegar and other fermented brines don't). If they're too salty, can you rinse the pickles before canning them? You can tell I've never canned anything fermented before, but if he has all these cukes coming in at once, he'll have to can them (fermented or quick recipe) - or else fill up every fridge in the family!

Go on Ebay and look for one. They are very cheap on there and I have purchased 3 or 4 for people who do not have computers. U will not get the Kirby rebuild that cheap but U don't have to have that done for 20 years. It's well worth the cleaning ability and U won't be throwing out that plastic junk,, every 2 years that people buy today. They R heavy to carry from floor 2 floor. I had one on each floor. It may slow U down, depending on your cleaning style. The change over from carpet to the hose cleaning is a pain unless U read the book and watch the DVD. Most people release the carpet head before they use the belt lifter to lift the belt from the shaft. They had to wait 4 the husband to come home and he will sit there and figure it out as he will not read the book, this will take him 2 hours and tell the wife, to never to use the hose again. I sold Electrolux just out of high school and I took many in trade and the tools were new in the box. They R good machines if U learn how to use it.
