rose wrapped cuttings aftercare
Comments (8)Those temperatures are pretty cold. Most roses will take temperatures down to about 28F, or -2C, without much damage. When temps start to go below that there will be cane damage. So unless that greenhouse will keep your temps above -2C all season those cuttings will likely not make it outside in the greenhouse. And with the way the winters have been trending you may get colder than you think this year. In previous years I kept my one year old seedlings in a small greenhouse and rarely lost one. This past winter I lost nearly all of them. I haven't decided what to do yet this winter. I may just bury them in between the big potted roses for better protection. I can't really bring them inside because roses really hate being inside and there are so many of them that I'd never find room for them all. And I need room for this year's crop of seedlings. Yes, I mean direct sunlight if at all possible. However, in winter even that may not be enough because of the short days. So it is possible to put them under lights too. I start all my rose seedlings inside under lights each winter. It does not have to be those expensive grow lights either. Any regular fluorescent light will work. It needs to be a good strong light, on for a large part of the day (I keep mine on 24/7) and the plants should be right up close to the light source. If the light source is too far away they will do what I call stretching to get more light. They become tall and gangly and will have weak stems. I keep the seedling trays less than an inch from the light and lower them gradually as they grow. To keep the humidity up around them inside you can place the cups on a tray of water and pebbles. Get a deep dish or pan and fill it with pebbles. Fill the pan only half way with water and place the cup on the top of the pebbles. Make sure the water does not touch the bottom of the cup at all. You don't want to the cup to absorb water from the pan. That will make your soil too wet and rot the roots. The water in the pan is meant to evaporate into the air raising the humidity around the cutting to a slightly higher level....See MoreFrost's near: Approach for Success w/SH Cuttings
Comments (2)Thank you very much, yiorges.. Do I need to/should I monitor the temp in the garage if I move them all there, to be sure it stays above 60 degrees until I see they've rooted sufficiently? So far I've done all woody shrubs that I've read can be propagated as semi-hardwood, but am going to add a bunch of holly as soon as I can, and then leave them in their starting pots/trays over the winter (probably let them freeze, or near it, as you described), and expect they'll continue the process in Spring. Does it sound as if I'm on the right track? Thanks again for any/all advice/input......See MoreNewspaper wrapped cuttings to be unveiled today!
Comments (8)thank you all so much for the responses. my cuttings didn't look as healthy as some of your pictures but a couple looked ok. I decided to experiment & put them on the north side of my house, next to the a/c, in hopes of extra moisture from condensation. I am hoping the soil will work well, it is nice & dark with a slightly sandy consistency. If it doesn't work well then I will be using mixtures in the future. This is my first attempt with roses...too bad they aren't as simple as forsythia! Thanks again, I really appreciate all of your input. thanks again!...See MoreSoftwood cutting success!
Comments (3)Looks good! I see you have a number of cuttings started - which is smart. That way *something* is likely to grow and you'll have at least a small success to keep you motivated....See Morevettin
