Hot Roses for Hot Times

Yes, we are back in the 100's again and are going to stay for a while--ugh.

So, here are some troopers, those that can give full-sized blooms in the heat. They don't last too long, but they don't shrivel or give mini sized blooms like some others that have left the premises.

Magic Lantern bud,

Molineux

Outrageous in full sun,

Didn't know Tahitian Sunset could do this,

Tuscan Sun keeps on blooming,

Hot Jean Gionos

and cool Jean Gionos (shade),

Biggest surprise of all, Silver Star takes the heat, this after 100 degrees,

Ouch---100 degrees---They would be scraping me up from the sidewalk.

Outrageous is great. Kathy, at least you have some blooms. I think my roses have gone dormant thanks to mother nature and insects. Wahhhhh, I want some blooms. Worst ever year for mine. Your Molineux is so pretty too.

My DH and I were in Hawaii for 6 days. While we were gone, first it rained one inch where we live. Then the heat wave came in (90 degrees +). I had a neighbor kid doing some pot watering, and the irrigation system was on, and between that and the fortuitous one inch of rain a couple of days before, the heat wave did not kill anything. However, the rain ruined many of the roses (many of which were in full bloom), and then the heat wave crisped what flowers were left. The lucky thing was, we have so many bushes which bloom at so many different times, I still had some good looking bushes going. Here is a pic of Graham Thomas. Ilene, Since you're thinking it would be OK if the onions bolted, they'll probably be stubborn and refuse to bolt! (That's the kind of luck I always have, anyway.) I like your rainfall collection tank. I've wanted something like that ever since we visited the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin where they have a massive rainfwater collection/cistern system that is incorporated into all their buildings and is simply amazing. We have 5 ponds, 3 of which we put in here after we built the house, but they haven't had water in them in months. They do catch a lot of rainfall when it actually does rain, but I leave the water in 4 of them for the wild things and the fifth one is "mine" to use to water the veggie garden if needed. That fifth pond is on the northeast corner of my veggie garden and I can pump water out with a small sump pump or can scoop it out with a watering can. This pond is fairly small and holds maybe a thosand gallons so the water doesn't last as long as you'd think. If I had it to do over again, I would have had Elvis (our backhoe guy--you gotta love the name) dig a quarter-acre pond and I would have had him dig it deeper. It is going to be 75 or so here today, so I suspect we'll have fires again like we have the last two days, although maybe we'll get lucky and have calm winds and no fires. I'm not ready for the cold to return. All the fruit tree buds are swelling--even the Mexican plum which tends to be a bit later than the others. I guess the cold will be a good thing because it will slow them down, but I'd still rather be warm. The plum tree that's been in full bloom for days now probably won't set any fruit, or will set it and lose it to the cold, but I'm hoping the other trees will make up for that one. I looked back at my temperature records and noticed that when Feb. is warm, we always have a cold spell around the first week in March, so this cold front that's coming in is right on schedule. Carol, that is a very smart cat. In the afternoon our cats "collect" on the back porch where the greenhouse plastic and the afternoon sun keep the temp about 10-20 degrees higher than it is out in the open. I guess sitting or sleeping in 70-90 degrees on a winter afternoon is pretty appealing to the cats. That porch almost feels "too hot" to me at times. Sometimes I open the french doors that connect that back porch to the breakfast room and let some of the porch's collected hot air flow into the house. Dawn

Thanks for the nice comments everyone! It is people like you who take the time to respond that makes posting pictures so worthwhile...THANKS! Seil...The rose is "Heaven on Earth"...(sorry about that; the name didn't quite come out entirely above the picture). It is a Jackson & Perkins rose which I obtained from a local nursery last year. It is an outstanding rose in all respects and blooms are huge & frequent. Here is a photo of it now in full bloom: And closeup: The leaves are glossy and the bush vigorous here for me and very healthy. Its one of my favorites. Celeste

it's always like a heat wave in orlando LOL but that's our normal :-) going to mid 90's today, humidity near 99% (as usual). last summer we set a heat record, 110 days straight at 90 or above then last winter set record cold with both lowest temps ever recorded and longest length of time at record cold. i was sure we were in for a record summer after a hot spring but it's been pretty normal thou a bit dry. norms right now are 94/77 for 2 more months then we trend down :-) the other evening i put a hygrometer from inside the house out on the lanai, it shot up to 99% humidity in a minute LOL brought it back inside after 15 minutes and it went down to 65% LOL that's dry for us :-) it had not even rained that day! ~ liz

Kathy, all your roses are gorgeous - as always! but wow that Outrageous outshines them all! I have to have that rose! it's so beautiful!!!!

wow; Outrageous is gorgeous,They are all just beautiful.Love Silver Star too.Its in upper 90's here today,and my roses look like hot water was poured on them,and wilted bad. Will water them a little later,if I can handle the heat out there.Thanks for sharing your beauties,as they are always a treat to see.

Kathy, this is great to see the roses that do well in the heat..and these all look like they could care less! This is one of those days when I wish I lived at the beach...but heck, I was in San Francisco today for a trade show and it was hot there too ! Beautiful photos.

Love the Hot Jean Gionos. Love'm all. We had a nice day in the 80s today but are getting ready for another wave of heat. Ugh!

Uuug I went to school outside of Barstow in Yermo California...near to Newberry Springs. But at least its a dry heat, we have like near 100 with about 99% humidity feels like your breathing thru a hot wet sponge.

Those pics are absolutely lovely, Tuscan looks great!

Just remember, most roses don't last long in 100 degree temps. These are roses that can bloom and look fairly decent in the heat, unlike some that just can't (my old Moonshadows and my current About Face).
As for those that can actually last well and look gorgeous for days in intnese heat, that would be Honey Bouquet, Ingrid Bergman, Crimson Bouquet, and Marilyn Monroe.

Kathy, your roses are always gorgeous, hot or cool. We broke a record here yesterday of 176 years. Hottest day on record for June 22 since 1830. California is sounding quite cool these days, even the Mojave.

But Patricia--what was your temperature? Maybe we should see who is hottest. We are shooting for 106 today, 108 tomorrow. If this sounds cool, you better come and visit me!

Phew - far too hot for me. All lovely shots. The veining in the blooms of your hot Jean Giono is particularly beautiful.
