Getting rid of landscape rock - boulder colo

Any advice on how to get rid of a 7 year old band of river rock that surrounds our property -- it is a band 6-8 feet wide and the rock must run about 4" deep. Hand digging is impossible and then there is the issue of disposing of it. Help!

Wish i had some advice for you. I have similar issues. When we bought our "new construction" home in 2000, the builder put WAY too much rock for my liking. I'm getting rid of it little by little by moving it to other areas or giving it to neighbors whose rock has slid away from their houses.
If you can get it all into one pile, I'm sure you could advertise on freecycle or craigslist and someone will gladly take haul away. Believe it or not, but there are people who need landscape rock who can't afford the exhorbitant price to get it new.

The contractor who sells rock in our community also buys it back. Can you check with rock suppliers in your area to see if they have a buy-back program. Or large landscape companies might also buy it - or at least remove it for free if you give it to them.

One thing to consider is that the pines and maple will still be shedding leaves, and they'll just shed them onto whatever you have planted. I'm guessing that your best bet is something evergreen with smaller leaves that will diffuse the water coming down so it doesn't hit the soil so hard or always in the same place, something like a row of boxwoods. The taller and bushier, the better, so you'd want to keep them pruned I guess. And clear of leaves and needles, as mentioned. You might get most of your winter precipitation as snow, so perhaps it would work... but I'm totally guessing, have no expertise at all. You can also attach a long pipe to your shopvac and use that to clean gutters... sort of. I suppose you could do rocks or gravel too.

I am so happy to find this site. Last year we had some foundation work done to our mid-century modern home in Illinois; the front of the house is now just dirt. I am not a life long gardener, as weÃ¯Â¿Â½ve only been in this house for six years. However, I have greatly enjoyed finding creative ways to add color and garden around the entire house. I was advised to consult a landscape designer about my wish to use one or two boulders in the front, which previously had mostly ground cover. My wish, however, is to learn how use boulders as part of a design and to make the front what I have created instead of someone elseÃ¯Â¿Â½s design. However, I need some dialogue with those who have gone before me about some particulars. First of all, I have found two boulders that are very interesting at a landscaping site, although after reading the blog, I may contact a few farmers in the area and see what is available before I purchase these. My biggest question is: how does one decide how much space accommodates what size boulder and how many boulders? Then, how do I determine where to place them relative to the house and relative to one another? All sides of both boulders IÃ¯Â¿Â½ve found are interesting and coordinate with the color of some stone we already have on part of the front? Third, if I am going to plant a small tree or bush, does that go in before or after the boulder? If I could find good solutions to these questions, I feel confident about the kinds of plants I want. My goal is to have an eye catcher of color and interest from the street and a design which feeds the soul upon entering the house. Thank you for considering my questions; any ideas for assistance would be greatly appreciated.

permatill! good idea -- i was reading about using gravel, but i just happen to have some permatill sitting around. i checked a couple of books on rock gardening out of the library today. i started to compile a list of plants to use and sedum is definitely on it. i'm also considering ice plants, creeping phlox, and azaleas. thanks! :)

Free Boulders/Rocks?

You could always drive around and see who is building near your house and unearthing a lot of rocks. I have gotten some edging rocks this way. Also from fields. I, like you, refuse to pay for rocks. However, when it comes to boulders, moving them is a problem, isn't it?

Ask around, you'd be surprised at who might want it. We took a huge amount of rock off of a neighbor's hands - saved him $700 in haul-away charges and we've got free rock to build our waterfall. Freecyle and Craigslist are good suggestions too, I bet you'll have takers in no time! (I managed to get rid of at least a cubic yard of fill dirt to other Freecylers, it was wonderful.)

This is a very bad suggestion: hurl the rocks at speeding cars on your street. Hurl the rocks at irritating neighbors. Hey, at least you will feel better until the police come...

My whole front yard is river rock--I just plant right through it. Okay, so it takes a drain/ditch spade and some serious leg strength to punch through the rock and the landscape cloth beneath it, but I manage. Sometimes, for a really big hole, I put all the rocks where I want the hole into a 5-gal. paint bucket, then dig through the cloth and earth.

My cat (yes, he's STRANGE) loves river rock. He carefully selects a rock, whacks it onto the front walk, then kicks the tar out of it.

Halloween is coming up, you can distribute quite a bit. Wrap each one in aluminum foil, the kids will think its a giant Hersey's kiss.
