Brown Spot/Brown Color... Need advise what to do...

hi,

pretty new in pepper gardening. There is some brown color besides green in the leaf, can pls help what to do? No chemical used, plant are growing in vermicast and garden soil.

That soil/ vermicast looks pretty wet. I'm fairly new at this as well but I believe you want "potting" soil for a plant that small. The roots should be able to dry out.

See if you can get a close up of the older leaves. I can't tell what the spots are. Could be a pest, but it looks more like chemical burn. Fortunately the new growth looks pretty good.

As above, peppers do not like wet feet. You have to plant in well-draining, well-aerated soil, and be careful about over-watering. (I've never seen vermicast so I don't know how well it qualifies for potting soil.)

Have you been using worm wash?

Okay back to the original issue. You have brown grass which is likely caused by too much water. It could be a fungal disease that killed the grass. Or it could be drowning by cutting off the air to the roots. In any case that grass is likely dead. Can you post another picture of the brown grass taken at a distance of 3 inches? And can you take it in the shade so we can see the grass with no shadows? Often we can see the fungus if there is any. It will also help identify the grass. I suspect this grass is a type of dwarf tall fescue called Marathon. It is all the rage in SoCal. If so then the grass will not spread by itself to refill the dead grass or the places where you pull out the St Augustine. The only way to get that grass back is to bring in more sod or find Marathon seed. There are three different Marathon grasses. They are Marathon, Marathon II, and III. Each one is dwarfier than the previous one. If you can visit with the people at Home Depot, they might be able to tell you which one they sell - or even if it was Marathon. If you mix Marathon III with Marathon, you'll notice a difference. If you want to be very safe in fertilizing, then use an organic fertilizer. It will be safe no matter what you're doing with the grass. Beyond organic, I cannot advise you. I have not bought chemical fertilizer in over 10 years. Organic fertilizer is hard to find in SoCal. My favorite is alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow). Here is a link to feed stores near you. Call around to get prices and availability before you make the drive. They are scattered around.

I'd suggest that you also try the paint forum, since I've had spots like these in our bathrooms over the years (don't know if they were sticky, never touched them) and they were something given off by the paint, as I recall. Of course, the ones that we've had have were removable simply by wiping with a wet sponge, so I don't know if these are the same thing that we had or not. We were able to just wipe them off, no problem. More appeared, but in different spots, and they were just able to be wiped off as well. They've not been a problem, if they're what we've experienced. -Roger

Generally speaking - and I'm no expert here, just have a few houseplants and have been learning a lot from this forum - some plants such as the softer leaves ones will show their displeasure and happiness quite quickly by wilting or perking up quite quickly. But I think some of the thicker leaved firmer plants can look ok for some time even when declining (more water reserves, stronger leaf structure,etc), for example sansevieria (snake plants), so maybe rubber plants are like this too. What I'm trying to say is it may have been going downhill for longer than the two weeks of obvious symptoms. Plus it's possible really high numbers of fungus gnat larvae could have munched on the really fine feeder roots. Although I thought the roots looked good overall. I don't know about the white bugs, you'd need to be sure what they were to know if they damaged it. And the (necessary) repotting was another stress on the plant. Many factors to consider, playing plant detective. It may well be the additive effect of several things. You've had lots of good advice from the experienced people above, on light and soils etc. Personally I would now put it in a bright warm draft-free spot inside, and wait. Don't let the roots dry right out while they're recovering but don't let the soil stay damp either. To achieve this, try using a spray bottle of water on a gentle jet to target where the pruned rootball is, and at the times when you do water more thoroughly leave the pot tilted at 45 degrees (even 30 degrees will help) for 15-20 minutes afterwards and then sit it on towels or paper pushed up against the drain holes for a couple hours. This isn't to remove all the water you just put in, it is to reduce the saturated layer that occurs at the bottom, the "perched water table" (yes, it has a name) Dont fertilise until you see new leaves growing and don't sunburn it by putting it in direct sunshine outside if it's not used to it. Personally, I like continuous flooring, so I'd run the hardwood into the kitchen unless it looks horrible with the cabinetry. Otherwise, there are a million light tiles.......hard to say with no photo. But tile is much harder on your back!

i just watered the pepper, i usually have 3 to 4 days interval before i water them again with rain water or sun evaporated water.

my vermicast mix is 1 vermi and 1 garden soil mix together

water drain is good, water just pass the soil when i water.

what is worm wash?

Yikes, garden soil is about the worst you can use. It is incredibly moisture retentive and fine/silty, leading to compaction and lack of aeration. I can't tell what we're seeing in the leaves, but it could be lack of oxygen, could be excess salts....

I see i see probably, need to change my soil and see what will happen.

soil is mother earth ...

media is what is used in pots ...

media is create to manage water .. in a pot ..

soil ... dirt ... is near impossible .. in my experience.. to MANAGE... in pots ... eventually it compresses.. and the water sheds to the edges.. and down the side.. and the middle goes bone dry ....

and your goal.. is to have exactly all the same media.. in every pot.. so as to know.. that when one pot is dry.. they PROBABLY are all dry ... you dont mention if you made a big batch of your mix...

you water.. when your pot needs water ... not on some schedule ... watering every 4 days.. may or may not be proper ...

experiment.. to find out.. i would to not water.. until the plant slightly wilts.. and then you will have some idea.. how often to water ... and you can also FEEL the weight difference in the pot ...

but .... your problem might be.. with the limited 'flow thru' of dirt in a pot... you may never be able to rewet the pot completely ... and unfortunately ... you will never really know what is going on in the pot ... until you break one open ...

the best investment ... really the only investment [other than the seed itself] .... is a high quality media ...

i know nothing about worm castings... but as far as i am concerned [probably heresy to the wormers.. lol] .. its just another form of dirt ... you have no structure in your media... things that create large gaps.. so water can run thru the whole ...

i am sure you can track down one of the thousands of posts on als gritty mix .... and if you read thru a few.. you should be able to grasp some of the concepts i mention .... especially if you find Als primer on such .... see link

Wow this really open up my understanding and its a big help, i keep on pushing that my plants might be on pest but as i think now your correct and i also noticed when i remove 1 its like a big clay and yes when i wAter everything runs on the side. This really helps much thank you!

Worm wash is the liquid that drains off when you make vermicast. Apparently some use it to water the garden, like a fertilizer mix.

I think Josh and the other Ken are on the right track. Get some Potting Mix, not Garden Soil or even Potting Soil. I would be leery of vermicast, especially in a started mix, because I don't know its characteristics and pH. It may be useful, but try it on older plants.

I might be opening up a can of worms here (no pun ) but in my area a lot of growers use aprox 20% worm castings in their soil along with a top layer it seems that the plants uptake a enzyme that acts like acid to aphids, white fly, and most other insects and keeps them away. I tried it seems to work, thirty plants with it no bugs forty five plants without free night at the buffet line. I was told one of the commercial nursery's locally is trying it on a large scale and having good results.
Myself I use a concentrated worm casting - bat guano from germination through the life of the plant in hydro and dirt and it seems to work
