Maybe more blooms on Francis Meilland
Comments (11)Thank you Pat and Jim. Pat, I think you would love it! If anyone could get it to bloom, you could, your roses are so prolific. I really do think there is something about the spot I planted mine that has prevented it from blooming more, since Firefighter is in the same bed, and has had similar issues, but they are both improving. Come to think of it, I've been wondering about my Pope John Paul II, which is in that bed too, and blooms okay, but is kind of a runt compared to the ones I've seen in pictures, I love it too, but also wish it was more vigorous....See MoreYour opinion is needed - Francis Meilland rose
Comments (3)I potted mine up in a 16" plastic pot when I got him several yrs ago. Did absolutely nothing for the first 2yrs. Third yr he finally bloomed. Then I put him in the ground and WHAM! He took off like a proverbial weed! He peaks out over 6ft and gives me maybe 3 good bloomings per season now. I have always been sorely lacking in my fertilizing routines, so he hasn't had much really ever. I would guess if you do a regular feeding he'd bloom a lot more. But he's definitely a big guy once he gets established and happy! He tends to be a little on the "warm" pink side for me. Depends on the temps tho....See MoreFrancis Meilland, Grande Dame
Comments (5)Thank you Dianela and haku! Dianela, I have several Hybrid Teas other than Kordes that are very healthy, of course I have a bunch of Hybrid ‘Teas! Memorial Day, Moonstone, Tiffany and Firefighter are some I can think of right now, but I have others too. Haku, when my Grande Dame was young it had floppy stems, but it seems to be getting sturdier as the bush matures, I agree about the fragrance...See MoreHow does Francis Meilland handle MidwestZ5 climate?
Comments (28)Not well in my estimate. I ordered him from Roses Unlimited in either spring of 2017 or 2018 and currently he is two decently thick canes *maybe* ten inches tall if I'm lucky. Plus thrips terrorize his blooms. I'm seconding Seil and her vote of 'Quietness'. I ordered mine from The Antique Rose Emporium spring 2017 and is currently around four feet tall and about 2.5-3 feet wide. Cane hardy to the tips but so far mine hasn't really held onto canes grown for more than a couple years before it pulls their resources and focuses on new growth. I hope this will change with maturity because even as nice as one or two thick, tall, hardy and branchy canes are, I am hoping for much more fullness once it's established. Francis has a more consistent fragrance while Quietness's I have found to vary muchly depending upon weather and season. Steven...See Moresara_ann-z6bok
