America and Bishop's Castle

America is a few years old and I love the coral color of it. BC is brand spankin new in my garden this year and is very fragrant with beautiful pink blooms... have a look...

Very pretty dude, I have both but they are both new to me this spring. Can't wait for some blooms for me. The coral color is gorgeous isn't it?? Judy

This thread brings back memories. I was planning a vacation to take my Mom along the Hudson River and through the Catskill Mountains in September of that year. I still grow Bishop's Castle, and love it. It's about 3 feet tall, good repeat and wonderfully fragrant blooms. My favorite color is pink...any pink, with a slight yellowish at the base...just sends me to seventh heaven! Ehann, how old is your Eglantyne? I put mine in a new bed and that bugger took off. I make sure to deep water it, with extra water(well, actually I put my aquarium water on it) and extra food. I take a gallon every other day from a goldfish aqaurium and put that on my eglantyne, I think that has made a big difference for some reason. Anyway, this is the 4th year I have had Eglantyne and this is the only year it has done really good. I almost lost it a couple years ago. I love the shape of the bloom so much, just gorgeous and the smell is wonderful. I hope you can give it another year and perhaps it will take off. Perhaps some fish emulsion put on it would help. Deb

What Roseseek said . . . But also . . . Grandmother's Hat doesn't have Octopus arms. It bells out GENTLY, but it is eventually upright. A slightly rounded urn shape. The canes have good substance, and don't flop about. As he noted, there are very few thorns. the canes are largely smooth, and easy to work (or walk) around. As to the suckering ... it happens JUST often enough to provide a recurrent source of new, rooted plants. We've taken advantage of that to share our original rose with many other people over the years, which is an additional joy.

Congratulations on your patience! BC will be floppier if you feed and water heavily. Of course feeding and watering heavily will also give you more blooms, so a bit of a trade off and balancing act. BC also tends to grow some low horizontal basals (in addition to those that grow straight up) even as a mature plant. The benefit to this is that you get flowers from the ground up, rather than just at the top. As a young plant though, it can just look floppy. Magpie is absolutely right. You don’t know if you’ll wait 5 years giving a rose tender care, to find it is a loser, or if it will turn fantastic. The challenge of rose growing.

I have America too and love it. Only I would like it to become taller. How tall is yours? It is a beautiful colourful rose! I love BC too, it is gorgeous!

bgrose, i have two Americas and both were butchered sticks i got at home depot last season. they did fine and this year the one in the photo grew 2 feet taller and filled out nicely. the other one has shot out a huge blooming cane and is about 3 feet taller that it was last year. I guess its ready to climb. its such a great color.
