Question about the foliage: is it last year's foliage? Cuz if it is, it's going to drop off anyway in earliest spring and look a little ratty as it does. How to know? How large and leathery are the leaves. Tea leaves grow and grow until they drop. Are the stipules getting a bit cracked and aged looking around the margins? If the answer is yes to both these questions, the leaves you're spraying are last year's foliage. If spraying is required, spray away, recognizing that they are going to fall off no matter what you do and they are going to interfere with your coverage of the canes. I faced this all the time with Teas and didn't like spraying them with lime sulfur for just this reason. Even after a dormant-strength spray, they don't drop their leaves. I didn't spray twice. It was just too hard to find the right conditions and time. Teas are almost evergreen. Like all evergreen plants, they will drop their leaves when they are good and ready...when the new growth pushes off the old and right after you've cleaned up the whole garden for the garden club. Ann, about the sunburned canes...I wonder about sunburn from defoliation in winter. Seat of the pants I suspect it's lime sulfur damage. I've seen it myself on my own Teas. Since I stopped spraying, there's less damage on new canes. Also, I'm getting much more systematic about removing oldest wood as Step #1 in my pruning. Teas are very salt sensitive. I don't think they much like lime sulfur. I do think lime sulfur and oil is a good deterrent to mites and thrips, tho. I've considered not spraying the plants and just the mulch around them for that reason.

3 of my very favorite roses are; "Westside Road Cream Tea" I adore this Tea rose for it being the first Tea rose to be in full bloom in spring in Sebastopol, where it is grown with 3 plants in a triangle, apex plant near the border, and I love its rich seductive fragrance, which is elusive on cooler days, but worth smelling on warm humid days. I'd plant it near the following two pink roses, because all 3 are a similar size. In the s.f. Bay area these 3 roses can easily be kept to 4 and 1/2 feet tall. "Mme. Antoine Mari" a pink blend Tea. It is an exceptionally beautiful Tea class rose that best shows its' nuances of pink hues in cooler weeks of the summer here. The new foliage in spring is a dusky plum hue, which sets off the pink roses in a sublime way. "Mlle. Cecille Brunner" (half Tea rose by breeding) This rose has been in commerce since the 1880's when it was introduced, for good reason, it produces the most perfectly dainty Tea-shaped pink rosebuds in creation. My mother grew this on the west side of our house in Seattle, surrounded by white anemones and purple violets. There are larger forms that bear the same roses, that were all introduced in the 1900's, if you want to make sure you buy the smaller form. There are many fans of the following rose; "Lady Hillingdon" has been kept to 4 and 1/2' tall in an Oakland public rose garden for more than 10 years. I expect it could be kept the same size in the Puget Sound area, although I prefer the golden-apricot hues of "Center Street Orange Tea" which is harder to find, which is even smaller, c. 2 1/2' tall by a bit wider. It has a bit more yellow to its' apricot hue which makes its roses brighter,than "Lady Hillingdons" and Center street Orange Tea has more curvier blossoms, I don't know how else to describe them. If powdery mildew is problemental "Pearl in Dragons Mouth" might defoliate for you as did "Ducher" for us near San Francisco. "Fabvier" proved to be a healthier plant, for us, along with the Tea roses listed above. Good luck, let us know what you choose. Luxrosa

Most fragrant Tea-Noisettes: Top T-N for both type of scent and strength of scent:Duchesse d'Auerstadt A vendor was selling a row of huge plants (budded onto root stock) of Duchess d. A. at the Old Rose Celebration a few years ago and all the large plants were in full bloom and I was kicking myself for having ran out of cash for it was the most fragrant of any Tea-Noisette I'd ever smelled at vintage gardens or at s.j. h. rose garden... The apricot colored blooms with a touch of pink were large and luscious and scented of stone fruit, and Musk rose, heady and seductive... at that moment I wondered why so many people favor Reve d'Or in comparison. FFFF, out of five. ___________ Marachal Niel, almost as fragrant, as the Duchesse, I bought my M.N. from Rogue Valley. My favorite yellow rose, and if it were the only yellow rose in the world I might be content, I adore it so much. It's 2016 and the plant is c. seven years old, it came from Rogue Valley and it blooms fully in spring, however rebloom in summer and autumn is only c. 25- 30 percent of the spring flush. It has a really lovely refined fragrance that is dependable, under all conditions and more than moderate in strength. If only I could find a well repeating clone. FF and 1/2 out of five. from Rogue Valley roses. _____________________ I can only rarely detect any scent from the Lamarque that I bought from A.R.E., it has a slight lemon scent scent with a meadow finish... and it's foliage is not nearly as pretty as the one at Morcom Amphitheare of Roses labeled California 'Lamarque' .The blooms are very beautiful but it's not the rose I so fiercely desired. Thank you both! Yes, I'm thrilled to pieces. As long as there is enough room I have no plans to prune my tea roses since I like them big and dramatic. Jackie, I've seen several discussions where it's argued that Le Vesuve is a China so you may well be right. I feel exactly the same way about Cels Multiflora. By any name I'm very attached to my two Le Vesuve since in some ways I consider them the backbone of my (unfortunately rather shrunken) garden. From 98 to 48 roses is quite a leap downwards, but I'm so thrilled to have roses at all, and am attached to my "oldies" that have stayed with me through all the upheaval. Edited: Thank you Lisa!
