Spider mites, Spider mites...
Comments (13)I had them once on a ever green and before I notice a 2 ft area was dead. I asked a nursery man about it and he said you can't see spider mites. He said to put a white sheet of paper under the area and shake the plant, then rub your fingers across the paper. If there are blood smears they are spider mites....See MoreCalathea (Prayer Plant) with spider mites
Comments (6)I would not use the plastic bag personally. I would get yourself a spray bottle and spray the leaves daily with plain water for a little while. Be careful not to keep the soil soaking wet though. Spider mites are not supposed to like moisture and spraying also can blast some of the little buggers off too. There is a Spider Miteacide, but I've never used it so can't comment. Winter is when they attack my Parlor Palm. The water spray seam to help....See MoreSpider Mites ID / advice on preventative measures for other plants
Comments (6)That is not spider mite webbing. And the mites themselves are so tiny they cannot be seen with the naked eye.....unless you knock then off onto a sheet of white paper (they will show up as microscopic specks of dust :-)). If you suspect mites, the best thing you can do is treat your plants to a thorough shower.....in the sink, in the shower or outside with a hose if a large plant. Mites hate moisture and humidity and maintaining the humidity at an adequately high level - always a challenge with indoor houseplants - will go a long way in discouraging them. Just make sure you are very thorough - top and bottom of all the foliage and down into the stems. I don't find insecticidal soap all that effective against either the mites or the mealies and would prefer to use neem oil for this purpose. But if you do opt for the soap, I would use a proper prepared horticultural insecticidal soap, not something made from household ingredients. They are not at all the same....See MoreSpider mites on my indoor plants!
Comments (2)Rinsing them with a strong water spray will help tremendously. Using an insecticidal soap is better- not dish soap but real insecticidal soap. Some dish soaps might work if they are the right type soap and not a detergent, but that's a crap shoot. Real insecticidal soap is cheap and stores really well so keeping some on hand is a good idea. Neem oil will work, too. Whatever path you take you will need to repeat it a couple of times a week for a month or two as eggs are always hatching. Then going forward either increase your indoor humidity or get into the habit of rinsing plants off in the shower periodically- spider mites thrive in low humidity/dry conditions....See Moremaplerbirch
