Looking for a good set of spice shakers

Usually I just grind enough dry chiles for what I need when I need some powder or flakes and then sprinkle it on right from the grinder, but I have so many chiles this year I was thinking about making up maybe 4 or 5 "blends" of different pepper flakes to keep on hand. Trouble is every store I've been to in my area has an extremely limited supply of spice shakers, if any. The ones they do have seem to have tops with holes that are either too small or way too big. Can anyone recommend an online retailer or specific brand that you use and has adequate size holes for chile flakes? It's hard to look at something on your pc monitor and tell if the holes will be too small or large, so I figure if I have something specific to look for I'll be better off. Thanks!

I'm one of the people who doesn't particularly like Liberty. I remember one poster saying that it needed to be well-ripened to shine. I picked some at a PYO orchard this fall on 10/16, after an especially long season (due to the early spring). Even so, it was just so-so. ~13-14 brix, with a nondescript flavor. I've had worse, but it wasn't good. The standout from the same day was some super-sweet Golden Russets (>21% brix). Given what Scott has said in the past (that Pomme Gris is similar to Golden Russet), I would definitely go with that. I've got one myself, but only planted it last spring. But, the must-have apple is Goldrush. Especially given the length of the growing season you have. Right off the tree it is one of the strongest flavored apples you'll find- lots of sweet and sour at the same time. And it's scab resistant with a great hard, good-keeping texture. I've had some pretty good Winesaps and not-bad Staymans from PYOs. I once found an Arkansas Black in a grocery store. While it is reputed to keep very well, even it could not stand up to the "non-refrigerated and tucked in a corner" treatment it received there. It was quite soft and not very impressive. I later had one which had been better preserved and it wasn't bad, but didn't really grab me (like a harder, but not crunchy Stayman). Winesap has been the best of the 3 so far, especially when well-ripened to the point where a few are just starting to crack.

Spanish Bar Dry Ingredients: 2Â½ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder Â½ teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons cinnamon Â¼ teaspoon ginger Â½ teaspoon grated nutmeg (don't miss a chance to use freshly grated nutmeg. Completely different taste, for sure.) Sift all those things together and set aside. Next Ingredients: Â½ cup butter Â¼ cup solid shortening 1Â½ cups sugar 2 large eggs, beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup chunky applesauce, homemade is best 1 cup plump raisins Optional: 1Â½ cup rough cut toasted walnuts Use a mixer, cream the butter, shortening, and add eggs. Blend well, then turn to low speed. Add vanilla and applesauce. Add raisins. Keep the mixer at low speed and start adding dry ingredients. Don't overmix. Just make sure the flour is all in, then stop mixing! Pour into the pan, bake in the middle of oven for approximately 45 minutes; until center tests done. Leave in pan and frost, or make bars. (They used to call it Spanish Bar Cake in the old A&P days.) (PS....leave the raisins out if you don't like them.) Use any frosting you like; cream cheese style works well. Blend an 8 ounce package of cream cheese, softened with: 4 tablespoons butter 2 teaspoons vanilla 2Â¼ cup confectioners' sugar 1/3 cup milk 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Beat well, add milk if necessary to be smooth and pretty. Ooey Gooey Pumpkin Bars Makes 6-8 servings Cake: 1 (18 1/4-ounce) package yellow cake mix 1 egg 8 tablespoons butter, melted Filling: 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 8 tablespoons butter, melted 1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg fresh whipped cream, for serving 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Combine the cake mix, egg, and butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13 by 9-inch baking pan. 3. To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla, and butter, and beat together. Wal*Mart carries some pretty nifty shakers too. They look like little Golden Harvest canning jars. Hold maybe 1/4 cup. What I really like abt them is the removable spacer between the shaker holes in the lid and the powder. Will keep the powder fresh and from spilling out until wanted. Easily taken out when want powder and replaced when stored.

Less than a dollar ea at my local stuporstore.

Cool...thanks guys! I checked my local Wally World and they only had salt & pepper shakers with tiny shaker holes, and I was looking for something big enough for flakes. I ordered a couple from the site ronnywil suggested. They looked about right. I'm sure local stores had what I was looking for at some point, but maybe they were sold out since it's harvest season.

Not sure if you have dollar stores in your nech of the woods but I get spice jars at 3 for $1.00. You could always drill a few bigger holes in the sprinkle part.

Thanks for the offer ottowapepper, that's very generous of you. I don't know why I didn't think about drilling larger holes in the tops...duh! Anyways, the ones I ordered online arrived and they were exactly what I was looking for. Thanks anyways though!

Hey I am following this thread. I just ground a bunch of cayenne powder and am looking myself for some good shakers with small holes because this powder is very fine I may have set my mill to close. Wally world had nothing I could use.

Would there be any value to using a pepper mill as your basic shaker? I was thinking if I did maybe I wouldn't have to grind my powder as fine - and of course it would naturally come out slower which solves the problem of having too large of holes. Any opinions on this?

Sounds like a good idea to me ( as long as you just use it for peppers). Better to not grind them up ahead of time anyway and with chiltepins you might could leave them whole.
