Name That Rose!

Carefree Spirit? Maybe, maybe not...

Hello everyone! There is a shrub rose that was planted at our house before we moved in and as such, we haven't the foggiest what it is. I wandered around a nursery with lots of roses in the area trying to match it up with one of their stock. The closest I got was 'Carefree Spirit,' but after some internet research I'm pretty sure that's not right. The blooms aren't in bunches like in internet pictures, my rose is more fuschia-pink versus red, my shrub isn't mounding (pretty sure on this), and, finally, my rose isn't resistant to anything. You'll notice from the images that I'm currently fighting the good fight against blackspot. This rose also doesn't have much of a fragrance. Thoughts? Thank you!

Have a look at Dr Huey which is what most roses are grafted on. The rose that it used to be died and this is what's left.

If you do not prune it (other then to dead-head) does it bloom again? If not, it's Dr Huey which is a once bloomer

Dark red. Mild fragrance. 15 petals. Average diameter 2". Medium, semi-double (9-16 petals) bloom form. Once-blooming spring or summer.

Interesting. It looks like a really good candidate. Does that happen often? I thought it was dead when we moved into the house and was surprised when it grew the next year. Its probably a once bloomer. Last year it got mites or some sort of bug and it didn't do very well after that so I'm not positive its a once bloomer, but it probably is. The flowers average more around 3" diameters as opposed to 2". Petal count is more along the lines of 14 - 20+.

Anything special I need to know about Dr. Huey?

Here in Florida the most reliable is Louis Phillipe, also called the Cracker Rose because every Florida Cracker with a homestead grew it. Why are they called Crackers? For the sound the whip made rounding up cattle. Louis P. is nearly bulletproof, blooms constantly. I have one and wish I loved it more. Duchess de Brabant is also very reliable and this one I do love. The bloom, fragrance and bush are all beautiful.

Here's some cheating The rose family- which includes roses of course, and also allows me to include apache plume and cliffrose. The mint family- includes russian sage, salvia, lavender, agastache, thyme : ) Penstemons Needled evergreens ornamental grasses Oops even cheating, still went over five succulents I think what is clear is that I can't make a list of five.

This is an interesting thread. I know a lot of people love Julia Child's kitchen and that the best thing about it is that everything is right there and handy. But for me, this would not be a comfortable workspace. I think we all have our own way of working and I like having everything handy but I think there might be such a thing as TOO handy -- at least for me. I have to agree with the statement above that "it's my kitchen and I should be comfortable in it" and if putting all your pots and pans and knives and utensils makes you comfortable then that's exactly what you should do! But all that would feel like clutter to me in my own workspace. I don't mean to offend anyone or say I don't like that style, in fact, I think Julia's kitchen is a marvel to look at. I'm just saying it's not for everyone. I haven't heard any complaints where guests were uncomfortable looking at utilitarian articles. I would hope that even if someone didn't like that they'd keep their opinions to themselves! But in any case, I'm a firm believer in doing what you like in your own house -- and not catering to what you THINK your guests might like or not like.

The "old English" and the "Weed and feed your finish" things are just gloppy oils that will build into a sludge that traps dirt. they look great for a while, but furniture from people who use it repeatedly is easy to spot by the build-up. Start by cleaning them thoroughly with a method that doesn't dissolve the finish: Soap and water (not Murphy’s oil soap, you want a plain liquid dish soap or general purpose cleaner, diluted for use) and a soft cloth to get all the sticky spills. Wipe down with clean damp cloths to get rid of the soap. Repeat with mineral spirits and 0000 steel wool or other extremely mild scrubby things to get rid of oily hand grime and build up old wax. Wipe it down with clean cloth dampened in mineral spirits to get all the loosened grime off. EVALUATE THE FINISH: What does it look like? Are there worn spots? You can stop here until you have them all cleaned up and evaluated. If you have bare spots on the finish, clear shellac can protect them and will be easy to remove (with alcohol) if you decide to completely refinish. If there are no bare spots and worn places, waxing and budding with HARD PASTE furniture wax ... really thin and buffed out thoroughly ... is all you need to do.

Yes. Dig it out and throw it away ASAP, then replant with a good rose.

Pretty funny. Its a possibility. I'm not a huge fan since it's such a problem magnet. Its the only mature rose I've got going for me this year so I'll at least let it last out the summer. I planted five different other rose this year but they're still in their infancy. I've maxed out the rose budget for the year. It'll give me something to shop for next spring.

You have now seen all the blooms that you are going to see on this plant, unless it lasts through next spring. It only blooms once per year. All you will see for the rest of the summer (after this bloom flush is over) is disease. It goes. And that is very typical -- when there are a few roots of Dr. Huey left below ground, they will try and spring a new plant. If, when you dig it out now, you don't get all the roots, you will once again have a similar pest rose next spring.
