Minis with old rose look and fragrance?

I've been hanging out in the Antique Roses forum but recently rescued 15 minis from a public garden that no longer wanted them, so I'm getting interested.
Are there minis with the old rose look and fragrance I love? Sort of like David Austin creating "reproduction" old roses?

There are several that have that fuller look. Your best bet is to research them at Help Me Find Roses. And check out some on line nurseries that carry a variety of minis. I know Heirloom Roses has a lot but there are others too.

Thanks, Seil. I think I'll also check out some of Ralph Moore's "Crested Moss" roses.

Your rose looks similar to a rose in the Sacramento Cemetery, our found rose, "Dr Peck's 12th Avenue Smoothie" is thornless, once blooming. Very fragrant. This found rose is thought to be the same as the Charles Lawson in commerce. Below is a link to a photo I took in the cemetery a few years ago. I liked this rose so much that I propagated it and planted it in my yard even though it is a once bloomer. It is quite vigorous and now takes up the back corner along the fence. Thank you, Melodye! they do look similar! It would seem that they make this sort of rows around the canes, but with very different sizes and sometimes touching each other, as if fused into a "thworn" (wow, sorry, that was really bad). I just got home and remembered that two of the roses you see in the full-bush shot are actually becoming hips, one of them is getting some blush with the sun. I don't know if you've seen it form hips, but if you have maybe they're somewhat distinctive? When they ripen I'll come back with a photo. It's nice that you mention it can do well in 45C temps, here we usually don't go higher than 40C, though I remember once we were at 43C and everyone was dying (figuratively, of course); at those temps this rose is pretty active, though the blooms can burn because of how dark they are. Looking for roses with Francis Dubreuil's fragrance

Francis Dubreuil/Barcelona is one of my favorites for color, performance and fragrance. And it is surprisingly cold hardy as well. I like it so much that I grow three different clones—from Heirloom, ARE and RU—and all are wonderful. I have found over time that this rose is much healthier, happier and larger grown in a pot compared to grown in the ground, but has no trouble surviving my winters when grown in the ground. In my conditions, I have found that spraying it periodically with potassium bicarbonate (a fancier baking soda used in wine making) keeps the leaves almost completely clean. It is super cheap, effective and safe, and doesn’t require any special protective equipment. I use 3-4 tablespoons per gallon of water every 2-3 weeks. That being said, I don’t know of any rose with a fragrance that matches FD. There are many damask scented roses but none with the special qualities and nuances of FD. Gruss an Teplitz is maybe somewhat similar but is MUCH sweeter and less complex than FD, and is likely to have the same disease issues in your area. Ditto for Crimson Glory. Although they have very different fragrances, Firefighter and Munstead Wood tend to be good reds that are more disease resistant than average. Firefighter smells like straight raspberry to my nose (I don’t personally detect damask or old rose at all in Firefighter). And Munstead Wood is old rose with a heavy dose of blackberries. Also consider Brindabella Purple Prince. It has gorgeous color (albeit not red) and VERY strong damask-citrus fragrance. Disease resistance is phenomenal. It is not a good cut flower but is a fantastic garden rose.

Hello ibuzzell, another very good source of mini roses is from Burlington rose nursery.In fact, Burling Leong the owner worked directly with Ralph Moore for many years before his death. I believe she still has many of Ralph Moore's creations. she would probably be your best source. there is no working website but I provided a link to contact her, also she is a very nice person that will treat you right. I grow several "smaller" roses that fit the profile you are asking about.

In addition, I propagate all of the roses I grow to share with others.

Thanks, Bob. I've met Burling and she's terrific! And thanks to Danty for those lovely pictures. I fell in love with Lavender Crystal and will try to track that one down :-)

I'm trying the mini-flora Moonlight Scentsation next summer (ordered from from Heirloom, Two Sisters may also have had it). I sought this rose after my mom's garden club heard a talk by the hybridizer (formerly of Nor'East I think?) Mom was intrigued by her critique of many modern roses, particularly their lack of fragrance. Photos I've seen show more of an old rose blossom form which seems uncommon in minis. I also noticed a Red Scentsation, sadly already sold out.

Hi ibuzzell, a nice mini that you may like is julie link. It is a Ralph Moore rose. it is orange and has that old fashion ruffly look. i purchased this rose last year from burlington nursery band size. it is suppose to have fragrance but i dont detect any, but it is still young. will see what spring brings. Also, it is disease resistant in my no spray garden. bob

Re 'Red Scentsation': I never met a miniature that was as fast and eager to go completely mildewy as that one was. YMMV, of course.....

Sazanami is a mini rose from Japan. The blooms look very much like Souvenir de la Malmaison. According to HMF it is scented but I can't detect any on my plant. Foliage and habit is similar to Cinderella, but Sazanami is bigger, about twice the plant size of Cinderella.

Unfortunately, like SDLM, it has serious issues with balling and rain damage.

Heritage Roses carries a few of the Dee Bennett roses, that have an old fashioned look, but I have been told the roses they send in their bands are quite small, so I am not saying anything positive or negative about the nursery because most minis selected for commercial distribution do start well from small cuttings.
