I haven't got any ideas on another, but you might not want to give up just yet.

My Charles de Mills was miserably disease ridden the first year . I did milk alternating with baking soda spray and the second year he was disease free. You might want to wait and see how it goes with your Francis as it matures longer, if keeping it isn't a risk to your surrounding plants.

Francis Dubreuil is at the top of my list to buy- I just missed it again this year at ARE. They always sell out, it is such a phenomenal rose.

Francis Dubreuil/Barcelona is one of my favorites for color, performance and fragrance. And it is surprisingly cold hardy as well. I like it so much that I grow three different clones—from Heirloom, ARE and RU—and all are wonderful. I have found over time that this rose is much healthier, happier and larger grown in a pot compared to grown in the ground, but has no trouble surviving my winters when grown in the ground. In my conditions, I have found that spraying it periodically with potassium bicarbonate (a fancier baking soda used in wine making) keeps the leaves almost completely clean. It is super cheap, effective and safe, and doesn’t require any special protective equipment. I use 3-4 tablespoons per gallon of water every 2-3 weeks.

That being said, I don’t know of any rose with a fragrance that matches FD. There are many damask scented roses but none with the special qualities and nuances of FD. Gruss an Teplitz is maybe somewhat similar but is MUCH sweeter and less complex than FD, and is likely to have the same disease issues in your area. Ditto for Crimson Glory.

Although they have very different fragrances, Firefighter and Munstead Wood tend to be good reds that are more disease resistant than average. Firefighter smells like straight raspberry to my nose (I don’t personally detect damask or old rose at all in Firefighter). And Munstead Wood is old rose with a heavy dose of blackberries.

Also consider Brindabella Purple Prince. It has gorgeous color (albeit not red) and VERY strong damask-citrus fragrance. Disease resistance is phenomenal. It is not a good cut flower but is a fantastic garden rose.

I grow FD in a 30 gallon pot in prime spot, I spray weekly "improved Cornell formula" (1 teaspoon potassium bicarb + 1/2 teaspoon horticultural oil per quart water), it did kind of ok last year in San Jose dry weather, although FD is looking terrible after 2 weeks of intermittent shower, albeit better than Abraham Darby (close to 80% defoliated and not a single open bloom possibly due to thrips). So far FD does not seem to be bothered by thrips. I have Firefighter, and I read your post about Brindabella Purple Prince, it's on my list! And please let us know if you ever find another rose with FD's fragrance.

I'm surprised that San Jose is an area where rose fungal diseases exist. I lived there for several years, and it seemed an ideal rose growing environment. I used the Cornell Formula 35 years ago on my wretched The Fairy roses, and it was only slightly effective. At that time, a liquid antibacterial soap was one of the ingredients. I'm no expert on scents, but a rose I've mentioned a number of times (too many times) on the forum is the gorgeous Rouge Royale, a red with a strong scent that might be a little like FD's, and long vase life. I agree about Munstead Wood, a favorite of mine. Diane

@Michael 9a NorCal, So far, I haven’t detected any real difference among the three clones I have. All seem equally wonderful and vigorous.

I have no experience growing roses in your climate or conditions, but I do want to comment that a 30-gallon pot seems extremely oversized for something like FD. Mine seem happiest when grown ”tightly” in smaller pots and then gradually moved up in size over time.
