Some old roses and a Hibsicus or two thrown in (Long)

This rose has been in our home longer than we have, more than 35 years. A couple of years ago, while delivering some soil, a tractor ran over it, killing it we thought. But we took the roots our of the ground and planted them in a safer place, it lived. Since than it has grown in leaps and bounds. The portion in the shot is the half thats falling outside the boundary wall. I have not pruned it since planting back, except for trimming it where it reaches the ground.

Your pictures are always so beautiful.

do you know the name of the old roses that the tractor ran over.

I'm just thrilled that you were able to rescue it.--that is the kind of success story I love to read.

Your rose is just gorgeous falling over the wall like that. All in bloom it must be breath taking:) Your photos are all very beautiful, thanks for sharing.

Gotcha, Mad gallica, on the shrubby thing. I don't want shrubby. The area is about a ten foot privacy wall between our driveway and our neighbor's property. There is only about two feet of clearance between the fence and the driveway, so shrubby definitely won't do it. At our old home I grew several of the David Austin roses with great success. I remember one of them, Abraham Darby--that is the type of graceful, arching aspect I am thinking of. Canes would get to be about 7-8 feet long, as I recall. I remember severely pruning it at the end of the season and then mounding some hay over it--i.e., no dramatic protection--and each year it bloomed just as beautifully. That is kind of what I am thinking of. I am also beginning to think that I am going to have to deal with mulch if I want to grow something really beautiful. Also--just for my own understanding: Climbers don't necessarily have to grow on old wood, correct? If I don't need to preserve the canes, then I could use any long-caned rose in that location, right? I think that it's fascinating that you hybridize some yourself. That would be so much fun to see what you can get. The last one you show is, to me, a particularly stunning new rose!! Does it have a good scent since Intrigue is one of the parents? Congratulations!! Betty Boop is a rose that I've often thought of getting, but I always pass on it. But your full bush shot shows how lovely a bush it is and how large and vibrant the flowers are. I just might have to get this one! Carol

Wow, Thank you for all the suggestions, this is such a good web page! I am happy to report that Chloe has not peed on anything since my original post. Shortly after posting my message I changed her litter back to the traditional gravel/clay litter. I guess she was trying to tell me that she didn't like the pine wood litter when she peed on the cloths. Regarding the diet food I mentioned, it is Hill's Prescription Diet: z/d Low Allergen. The vet said that the proteins are broken down in this food, therefore there is less of a chance for agitation and digestive issues. So other than the fact that she is still not cleaning herself properly she has been her normal funny self :) She is a little bit over weight which may be the reason why she has issues bending and licking her privates :o Thanks for all the responses everyone! Here's an example from Gardenweb. Someone in southeast Asia put up a picture of a beautiful HT. But I knew that HT had only been introduced eight months earlier (I knew the hybridizer and that he was no where near se Asia.) So I asked how the poster managed to grow that rose. I got an on line response that was dripping in snottiness to the effect that I was stupid for not realizing that he could grow great roses and maybe I didn't know the country he lived in. I responded with my reasoning that even if he got budwood, it was unlikely that he could propagate a budded rose big enough in the time available to produce that large and perfect a bloom. ( I then emailed spike about the problem.) To my knowledge that poster wasn't heard of again. BUT , off line, I got an email from someone I recognized from Hawaii, and she included a link to the photo she had posted, and pointed out how the troll ahd photoshopped her image to match the petal colors of the rose in question. Why did a troll do that? Boredom? Wanted to hook up with someone in this hemisphere? I doubt we'll ever know.

That is a beautiful rose. Is it a repeat bloomer, or once bloomer?

Yes I think the second is Banksia alba.

The foliage is just beautiful. I think this proves that in dry climates, better foliage as it is the humidity that breeds fungi.

I think but I am not sure, the one coming over the fence is Banshee. Someone who has actually seen one could probably know, whereas I am just guessing, but it is something I always wanted but feared it might eat me.

I have no idea about the name, but its a once bloomer. It usually blooms after the Banksian roses.

Aamir - gorgeous pictures again. Thanks for posting the Hibiscus - makes me homesick :o), my Paternal Grandparents had a whole hedge of different coloured Hibiscus in the front garden that I had so much fun playing with (the blooms were a favourite for pretned cooking cos they came in so many colours)
