when do climbers bloom?

Hi everyone,

I received Tyrelle, a climbing white miniature from Nor'east back in May. It's growing beautifully next to the trellis. Zero buds. It's near lots of other minis that I received at the same time, all of them are blooming. So the question is, why isn't Tyrelle blooming? It's got enough sun, it's being treated very well (peat moss, composted manure, well drained, etc.), it's growing great, just zero flowers.

My friend has a climbing mini (climbing kristin) with the same issue. Her others minis are blooming but not this one. So is it something to do with climbers?

Climbers of any type usually take 2 - 3 years to mature. They like to grow roots and canes and then bloom. Give them time.

Tyrelle is a nice rose! If it is alive, give it time. Worth a nice spot IMO

I agree with Eric, no pruning. What you could do is give it one of those liquid fertilizers with seaweed and other stuff, they work wonders on weak plants.

So many helpful & descriptive responses! From what almost everyone says about Crepuscule, it seems to be the perfect rose, fragrant, constant bloomer, almost thornless, disease resistant.. what more can you ask for?! I decided that this one would be my first climbing purchase ever, and I found a website through "Dave's Garden" for a nursery called Niche Gardens, which had it in stock in 1 gallon containers. I am excited to see how it does, however now I have all these other amazing suggestions to consider as my second and third climbing roses. I think I will put in an order at RU for the cl. Lady Hillingdon for next year because I just cannot get over the beauty in all the photos I have seen & I must give that rose a try. Reve D'Or looks very intriguing as well, it seems to have as good of a repeat as Crepuscle, with a softer yellow/apricot coloring that looks almost ivory.. very lovely. Buff Beauty looks lovely as well but I am not sure that I will have room for another rose that gets huge, I am sure Crepuscle will give me a run for my money in the garden space department in a few years. Kingcobb, I know that Don Juan is a red, but since everyone seems to comment that he is so fragrant & such a heavy bloomer I think I may have to add it to my ever increasing "find a place for this rose" list. I think it would add some nice contrast to all this yellow/apricot. I actually already have a rose that I have decided must be Teasing Georgia, I bought it cheap as an unlabeled, abused little thing from the "alley of impending doom" at my local nursery, and I have been nursing it back to health for a few weeks now. I posted photos of it here and a few helpful members have convinced me it is probably a Teasing Georgia. So if I can get it looking good and strong again, there is another climber for me to play around with! I'll link that post at the bottom. Has anyone had any experience growing Pat Austin as a climber? I saw an image of it on this site somewhere and it was jaw-dropping, it finally made her "weak necks" seem like a good thing, because she looks beautiful from below. Thanks again all! Jessica. It's not a climber out here. More like a big shrub rose. Tying the canes from pretty much any rose will cause it to send out more new growth, so you'll get more blooms. But that rose doesn't really bloom all that much anyhow. I liked it but finally got rid of it for something that bloomed more.

Thanks for all the input! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. This is the first climber I've planted so I haven't known what to expect. I managed to kill a carpet rose...not very encouraging. Okay, the April freeze and then a (flooding) rain in May in this area may have contributed, as it was starting on it's 2nd season. Every nursery worker I talked to smirked as they said "You're not supposed to be able to kill those". Just my luck. I seem to be good at growing things but not getting them to bloom....I hope my kids turn out better than my plants. Thanks again!

When it comes to climbers and ramblers, patience is the word. It best to remember...yr1 sleep, yr2 creep, yr3 leap. I have a climber that bloomed in yr 2&3 but really did not mature with lots of blooms until year 4 and the older it gets the more blooms it gets.

Just remember to train the climbing roses correctly (zig-zag or pillar the canes) and you will get max blooms.

There is a great series of videos on youtube called "Roses are Plants Too" check them out as they are realy good at show how.

Thanks Liz, and everyone else.

I didn't know there was a correct way to train the climbing roses ! Will definitely look at the video, especially since I don't understand "pillar the canes"... but I'll learn. And yes I'll have patience. I also just recently bought 4 rambler, (not minis) they are not very big, but I'll remember to be patient.

Pillaring it a great way to grow a rambler or climber in a smaller area. I have a rambler that I will be pillaring up a tree. And I have the mini Earthquake CL in a pot that I am pillaring up a tripod. The videos are whole series of short but very informative videos....from pruning roses depending how they grow to training to grow on a arbor or trellis, pillaring, pegging, planting rose, etc. And the rose "eye candy" is really nice to look at as well. I have learned a lot watching them.

It was a surprise! The moment I heard from you saying -- be patient with those climbers I walked ouside and said (to the rose..) take your time!

am a little crazy. I talk to my roses....

Right next to Tyrelle is a climber -- it's a mystery (lost the tag), not a mini, quite big, not a single bud. It's close to 4 1/2 feet tall. Am hoping that it too will eventually bloom!

You are not a little crazy, I think most of us talk to the roses and other plants as well. Can you maybe try to train your unknown climber and it may suprise you as well.
